Chapter 15

My Darl

Vanilla had just stepped into her house, she faintly heard Lucy's voice talking with her mother. She hurriedly stepped into the room where Lucy and Xaviera were.
"Mama..." Vanilla greeted Lucy, she used to call Lucy 'Mama' like Beck called her.
"Oh, my dear... I finally see you," Lucy said, the woman immediately stood up and met Vanilla who approached her. "How are you?"
"I'm good, how about you?"
"I'm also good, it's just that Beck almost gave me a high blood pressure attack," Lucy said. She stroked the hair on Vanilla's head.
Vanilla smiled wryly. Not only had Lucy almost had a high blood pressure attack, Beck had also crushed her feelings. "Mom, did you fight with Beck?"
"He can't oppose me," Lucy replied, the woman stretching her arms. "I wish you could be a little more patient, Beck is stubborn."
"Beck, he's...."
"Beck has broke off his engagement with my daughter, he accuses Vanilla of inciting you to fire her secretary," Xaviera said, cutting her daughter off.
"What?" Lucy looked very surprised to hear Xaviera's words just now because since they had been talking Xaviera had been acting normal.
Xaviera, who had been talking with Lucy since tens of minutes ago, had not brought up the relationship between Vanilla and Beck in the slightest, nor did she show any signs of concern as if everything was going as it should. It was as if the relationship between Vanilla and Beck had no more severe cracks to the point of breaking down.
"Beck ended it," Vanilla said softly, the girl lowered her face.
There was no denying that her feelings hurt like a stab remembering all of Beck's words. Remembering how Beck had spoken to her, accused her, and looked at her with a contemptuous gaze.
"Oh my God...." Lucy collapsed onto the sofa she had been sitting on. The woman clutched her chest, she felt that Beck really wanted to make her die faster because of a high blood pressure attack. "Son of a bitch," she muttered.
"Mom, it's not a problem. Me and Beck...."
"My daughter can get another man," Xaviera said, cutting her daughter off.
Lucy swallowed, her face feeling slapped in front of Xaviera. She looked at Vanilla with a pained look in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Vanilla."
Vanilla approached Lucy, she sat down beside the woman and took Lucy's palm. "Mom, it's not your fault, not Beck's."
"I'll make Beck yours, trust me," Lucy said.
Vanilla shook her head. "Mom, I'm tired. I think this is the way it's supposed to be."
"No, sweetheart. Vanilla, you have to be my daughter-in-law."
"Lucy, don't do anything else, leave Beck to his own devices. If we push him, I'm sure he'll stay away from Vanilla and you," Xaviera said.
As good as his relationship with Lucy was, he didn't want to risk Vanilla. Vanilla's feelings could change over time if there was another man with her, Xaviera was confident that one day Vanilla could find a man who could respect Vanilla's feelings. Whether Nick or another man, what was clear was that her daughter was still young, had a long future, and was just about to step into real life.
"Oh my God...."
Lucy felt like strangling her son and even more so when Beck didn't come back last night. She was getting so sick of Sophie that she wanted to make the woman disappear from the face of the earth because for the second time Sophie had messed up Beck and Vanilla's relationship.
"I'm going to make that girl of unknown origin pay dearly for everything she's done to you, Vanilla," Lucy said with emotional distress. She squeezed her own palms.

Horse racing in Spain is an annual event held on the beach in Sanlucar de Barrameda. Originally held in 1845, the horse race was started by fishermen competing to transport their catches and later became an annual event to attract both local and foreign tourists. Participants will race their horses along 1400 meters, here jockeys are challenged with terrain conditions that are not easy, they must spur their horses to run at a speed of 75 km per hour through the damp sand.
Usually a few hours before the horse race starts, visitors have gathered on the beach to wait for the event. Although the event starts at dusk, many people have been gathering since noon to get the best spot to watch the horse race.
Vanilla and Cassandra were in the jockey's tent where Jovanca was preparing herself to put on the various safety equipment that she had to wear on her body.
"Oh my God, it's been so long since I've seen a horse race," Vanilla exclaimed.
She used to go to the races with Beck and Lucy every year, before Sophie came between them, to be exact.
"Four years," Cassandra said.
"No."
"Huh?"
"Six years."
"But you were only in New York for four years," Cassandra protested.
"I certainly haven't seen a horse race in six years," Vanilla said, the corners of her lips portraying a wry smile. Vaguely, no one could see it.
"Where's your bodyguard, by the way? He's usually attached to you." Cassandra brought the binoculars closer to her eyes, trying to gauge the visibility of the racetrack.
"He is...." Vanilla let out a breath that felt labored, labored because Beck seemed to hate her even more now. "Beck has a girlfriend now."
"Oh, good. You're free," Cassandra said indifferently.
Vanilla smiled blandly, she grabbed her binoculars, held them close to her eyes then slowly shifted to look around the arena. She stopped her movement when she caught sight of a man she recognized. Nick, the man had his arm around the shoulder of a girl wearing a jockey outfit.
What an asshole!
Vanilla cursed, either annoyed that Nick was with another girl or she felt played by Nick. That guy just yesterday said he wanted to be her boyfriend and today was with another girl, they were so close, so familiar and there seemed to be no distance between them.
It was that easy for Nick to get another girl after I rejected him.
The girl sighed her heavy breath. She was feeling very irritated, almost angry. Feeling like her heart was being stabbed by a dagger, she wanted to go up to Nick, drag him away from her, and cuss him out to her heart's content.
Vanilla sighed again, she was sure that she was still breathing using her lungs, not her heart. But why did her chest hurt so much like something was wrong?
A pat on her right shoulder made Vanilla end her suddenly tangled thoughts. The girl turned her head.
"I asked, what would you like to drink?" asked Stefano who had just arrived after buying drinks with Adam.
The two men were no less handsome than Beck. However, they were certainly a far cry from Nick. They were friends of Vanilla and Cassandra in high school.
Vanilla blinked her eyes. "Anything as long as it's not alcohol."
"You scaredy-cat," Adam mocked. He grabbed an orange juice bottle from a plastic bag and held it out to Vanilla.
"Thank you," Vanilla said. The girl grinned widely.
Stefano rubbed Vanilla's hat on her head. "I thought four years in New York made you change."
"I've changed," Vanilla said.
"Your age has changed, but you're still the same." Stefano said his words softly.
Vanilla chuckled, Stefano was right. She really hadn't changed much in any way, the only thing that had obviously changed was her age. And another change that no one else knew about was that she was no longer engaged to Beck, he had completely walked away from her.
"Don't try to seduce her," Cassandra said sharply, the girl glaring fiercely at Stefano.
"Of course, I'm just taking a little chance because Vanilla isn't with her bodyguard," Stefano teased Vanilla.
Vanilla chuckled as the bodyguard would probably never be around again.
"We'd better find a better spot, it's blocked by the tent," Adam said as he surveyed the surroundings. "The event will start in thirty minutes."
"Right, let's go." Stefano put his arm around Vanilla's shoulders.
The four of them walked to a strategic-looking spot after saying goodbye to Jovanca, who seemed to be seriously preparing herself and her team.
The horse race was lively, and like the thousands of other spectators, Vanilla and her friends cheered and clapped for the competitors. There were a few who fell, but they didn't seem to have any serious injuries as they were able to get back on their feet and some were even able to continue riding their horses again.
Darkness falls over the beach in southern Spain, as one by one, people leave the place as the event comes to an end.
Darkness began to creep over the beaches in the south of Spain, one by one people left the venue as the event came to an end. Vanilla along with Cassandra, Adam, and Stefano also shuffled away as they joked about their teenage years.
"Stay away from my girlfriend!" The heavy, stern voice made Vanilla gasp.
Don't know where it came from. But, as Nick stood in front of Vanilla, the man's face looked stiff. The look in his eyes was so sharp, there was no oceanic beauty in his blue eyes, only an ember of anger staring at Stefano's arm around Vanilla's shoulders, still unmoving.
"Let go of Vanilla!" Nick said once again.
