Chapter 139 Chapter 139
Chapter 139 Chapter 139
Sofía watched me write.
She said: the fourth line.
I said: yes.
She said: here.
I said: the east side has good energy.
She said: I told you.
I said: the acai bowl quality.
She said: yes.
I said: produces better lines.
She said: yes.
I said: you were right.
She said: I know. She said it simply.
I read the fourth line back.
I thought about Clara at the head of the screen in six weeks.
I thought about the next person who needed the word.
I thought about Before First going somewhere and what somewhere would find.
I thought about the reform committee in the building phase and the two dissenting programs and Dr. Park and the slow work of choosing.
I thought about the fifth line forming already, somewhere in the day ahead.
I thought about the far end.
Always the far end.
Always counting.
From one.
I put the notebook in my bag.
I said: the dinner.
She said: six weeks.
I said: I want to say something at the dinner.
She said: obviously.
I said: not a speech.
She said: I know. Just something.
I said: yes.
She said: you'll know what it is when the time comes.
I said: yes.
She said: the way you knew the last line of the essay.
I said: yes.
She said: and the last line of Before First.
I said: yes.
She said: and the fourth line.
I said: yes.
She said: you always find it.
I said: not always immediately.
She said: no. Sometimes it takes forty minutes.
I said: the rink.
She said: yes.
I said: sitting down first.
She said: and then getting up.
I said: yes.
She said: and then not falling once.
I said: yes.
She said: Before First.
I said: yes.
She said: I'm proud of you.
She said it simply.
Without performance.
The Sofía weight of it.
Just the weight.
I said: thank you.
She said: don't be soppy about it.
I said: I mean it.
She said: I know. Still don't.
I said: Sofía.
She said: yes.
I said: the corner table. Six weeks. The dinner.
She said: yes.
I said: I want the acai bowl from the east side.
She said: obviously.
I said: not the dining hall one.
She said: the east side is significantly better. I've been saying this all year.
I said: you've been saying it since January.
She said: ten months of correct information.
I said: delivered over the correct timeline.
She said: yes.
I said: both things.
She said: always.
We picked up our bags and went out the door into the Friday morning.
I said: the fifth line.
She said: where.
I said: somewhere.
She said: today.
I said: probably.
She said: what's it going to be.
I said: I don't know yet.
She said: that's fine.
I said: yes.
She said: the not knowing is part of it.
I said: yes.
She said: you'll know when you're in the moment of it.
I said: yes.
She said: the specific ordinary moment.
I said: yes.
She said: and then you'll write until it's finished.
I said: and then I'll write until it's finished.
She said: and it'll be the right thing.
I said: yes.
She said: it's always the right thing when you stop deciding what it means before you get there.
I said: Hendricks.
She said: you've internalized Hendricks.
I said: all semester.
She said: she'd be pleased.
I said: she'd say it was the work.
She said: it was the work.
I said: yes.
We reached the fork.
She went left toward the communications building.
I went right toward the natatorium. Not to train just to sit on the bench for a while.
The way I did sometimes now. The way that had started in October as habit and had become something more like conversation with the ice. The way you had a conversation with something that talked back.
I went inside. I laced up, not to skate.
Just the laces. The ritual of them.
I sat on the bench.
I looked at the ice. The Friday morning rink. Empty. Waiting. The surface unmarked. The specific quality of a thing between its uses.
I thought about the fourth line. About the next person who needed the word. About what they would do with it. About the story I hadn't known I was writing. About Before First in six weeks. About Clara at the head of the screen.
I thought about Lily's spatial arrangement and supporting rationale. About Sofía saying I'm proud of you without performance.
I thought about the you\-data file with twelve sub-categories and intentional sequence. About sub-category nine being the lane debate. About the eight other sub-categories I hadn't found yet. About the finding. About the discovery. About things arriving when you stopped looking for them.
The fifth line arrived on the bench in the empty rink.
The fifth line was this.
The story you didn't know you were writing is always the truest one because you weren't performing it. You were just living inside it until it became something you could see from the outside.
I wrote it in the notebook.
I read all five lines back.
The morning after the landing is the first morning of everything.
Before the landing you know where you're going. After it you find out.
What you find out is that the thing that was yours before the landing is still yours after it. And the after is bigger than the before. And the bigger is not harder. It is just more.
More means you find the next person who needed the word and you give it to them and what they do with it becomes the story you didn't know you were writing.
The story you didn't know you were writing is always the truest one because you weren't performing it. You were just living inside it until it became something you could see from the outside.
I looked at the five lines.
I looked at the ice.
I said nothing out loud.
The ice knew. The rink knew. The bench knew. I was inside the truest story. I had been since October. I just hadn't been able to see it from the outside until now it becomes visible. Just the way it supposed to be.
