Chapter 71 Deadline
"Don't act like I'm dying tomorrow, I'm just saying thank you." He pulled her close. "Thank you for choosing me. For letting me choose you. For building something worth fighting for."
They stood together in the moonlight, holding each other close as soft silver light lit the garden and dark shadows gathered at the edges, the cool air growing quiet as midnight neared.
Tomorrow, the real fighting would start.
But for now, they had a moment of peace.
The Architect called right at midnight.
Eva answered on the second ring while her family gathered in the study. Her husband, Adrian, held her hand to support her. Her brother Daniel stood in the doorway. Richard and Eleanor sat across from her. Leonard had his notepad ready.
"Mrs. Cavanaugh." The Architect's voice, sounding from the other side, was smooth and controlled. "Your week is up. Have you made your decision?"
"I have." Eva kept her voice steady. "But I want to hear more about what you're proposing."
There was a pause. Eva could tell the Architect was surprised, even through the phone.
"Oh, what a surprise. I thought you'd say no and turn me down. But this is interesting. No threats, and no big speeches about 'I'm not surrendering to scum like you.'"
"If you expected that, then you don't know me well. I'm not a hero; you think I am. I'm just a mother trying to protect her children." Eva glanced at Adrian, drawing strength from his presence.
"When my children's safety is at risk, I have to put their well-being first. You offered me a role in your group, but before I agree, I need to know exactly what that means." Eva said.
Eva waited for Catherine to say something or deny her request, but she didn't say anything.
So Eva continued, "Am I being asked to be an equal partner, or do you want me to run your activities here? All I know are rumors: that your group works in secret and controls political matters behind the scenes. My main goal is to protect my family, so I can't risk their lives by joining something I don't fully understand."
There was another, longer pause.
"So, all of this to stall for time, I see."
"Don't twist my words. I'm being practical. You didn't get this far in your organization by making rash decisions, and neither will I. If you want me to join you, I need to know what I am getting into," Eva said, trying to sound confident.
"I know nothing about you except your code name, the Architect. You want my help? You want to use my family's resources for your plan. Then show me why it will help me. Tell me what you're building and how it helps me. Help me understand why I should trust you."
The silence dragged on.
Suddenly, the Architect laughed.
"You are remarkable, Eva. Truly remarkable." Her voice softened a little. "Alright. I'll give you what you want, a glimpse behind the curtain. Think of it as a gesture of good faith."
"Really? You agreed?" Eva was surprised.
"Yes," Chatherine answered.
"When?" Eva's voice was eager, but she tried to control her excitement. Finally, they were getting a lead.
"One week from today. I'll send you the location. But remember, you're supposed to come alone."
"Absolutely not. You are someone who threatened to kill my children. How can I trust you? If I'm walking into unknown territory, I'm bringing protection."
"Fine. You can bring your husband, but no one else." The Architect's voice grew sharper. "And Eva, don't mistake my patience for weakness. I'm letting you ask questions because I see potential in you, but my patience has limits."
"I understand."
"I doubt that. But you will, soon enough." There was a pause. "One week, Eva. That's all you get. Don't keep me waiting."
The call ended.
Eva put down the phone, her hand shaking a little.
"Well," Eleanor said into the silence. "That was unexpected."
"She's curious about me," Eva said, looking at the phone. "She thought I'd say no or give up, but I asked questions. That got her attention."
"It's dangerous too," Adrian said quietly. "We might be walking into a trap."
"Maybe. Or maybe it's a chance for us," Eva said, looking at her family, the people who had always supported her. "She's going to show us something. We'll learn why she's doing this, and that's important hearing it from her directly."
"What if it's a trick? What if she's just planning to kill you both?"
"Then Marcus Cole and the alliance we're building will keep going without us," Eva said calmly. "But I don't think she wants to kill us. She wants to use us, so I don't think she'll hurt Adrian or me."
"And you're going to let her think that's possible? That you're willing to be used by her?"
"I'm going to give her exactly what she asked for—a chance to convince me," Eva said, her eyes hard. "And while she tries, we'll keep building what we need to take her down."
Daniel came forward. "What do you need us to do? We will help. You are not alone in this, Eva."
"Thanks, Daniel. I know you're all with me. That's why I'm standing strong." Eva smiled at her brother. "I want you all to keep gathering information on the Consortium and keep making partnerships, building our network to take down Catherine."
"Worry not. We will do our part in this mission."
"Yes, we should all work to secure our future. Keep getting ready for when we stop pretending and start fighting back." Eva looked at each of them. "We have a week. Let's make the most of it."
After the meeting ended, Eva went to check on the children.
When she found them in their room, they were awake, huddled together in Lily's bed under a messy patchwork quilt, the soft light from the hallway casting long shadows across the room. The tension in their bodies and the quiet watchfulness in their eyes showed they knew something important had happened.
"Mommy?" Lily's voice was small. "Is everything okay?"
Eva perched on the edge of the bed, pulling both children close.
"We're working through some difficult things," she said carefully. "But the people we talked about—the ones who want to cause trouble? We're handling it."
"You sounded strong on the phone," Ethan said quietly. "I heard through the door. Sorry, I know I wasn't supposed to listen."
Eva couldn't bring herself to scold him. "What did you think?"
"I thought you sounded like Grandpa when he's doing business. Serious. Careful." Ethan's dark eyes studied her. "You're not going to let the bad person win, are you?"
"No." Eva held them tighter. "I'm not going to let anyone hurt this family. Not ever."
"Promise?"
