Chapter 47 Warehouse

Chapter 47 Warehouse
"You are worthy." Eva stepped closer and pressed herself against him. "You've protected me, supported me, and loved my children like they were your own."
"They are my own."
Eva chuckled. "Because they are your own. You've stood by me through all of this without asking for anything in return."
"I don't want anything in return. I just want you."
Eva rose on her toes and kissed him.
The kiss was intense. It was full of desperation and hunger, carrying all the fear, longing, and love that had built between them.
Adrian kissed her back, wrapped his arms around her, and held her so close that no space was left between them.
"Stay with me tonight," Eva whispered against his lips. "I don't know what will happen tomorrow. Tonight, I just want to be with you."
Adrian pulled back slightly, searching her eyes. "Are you sure?"
"I've never been more sure of anything."
He kissed her again, this time gently and with tenderness, then led her out of the library.
Tomorrow, danger and darkness waited for them.
But tonight, love was all that mattered.

The warehouse stood tall against the night sky, silent and imposing.
Eva stood at the edge of the parking lot with Adrian, looking at the building that might hold the answers they needed or could be the trap that ended everything.
The waterfront was an old industrial area, once bustling but now forgotten as the city moved on.
Rusted cargo containers lined the edges. Broken windows looked out, and the air smelled strongly of salt water and decay.
"Last chance to reconsider," Adrian murmured.
Eva shook her head. "We've come too far to turn back now."
Behind them, Adrian's security team stood ready—twelve men and women, all former military or police, armed and trained for situations like this.
They had spent the day planning, practicing, and getting ready for anything they could imagine.
But Eva knew that no matter how much they prepared, they couldn't get ready for everything.
The awful moment she found a threatening letter on her door, the look on Adrian's face when he realized they were being watched.
Her stomach tightened as she remembered how helpless she had felt then, and how she was still vulnerable now.
What if this was another trap she couldn't see coming? What if her choices put everyone she loved in danger? The fear was cold and sharp inside her, impossible to ignore.
"Communications check," Adrian said into his earpiece.
One by one, the team checked in. Everything was working, and every area was covered. If something went wrong, they had several ways to escape.
If anything went wrong.
Eva took a breath and stepped forward.
The warehouse door was unlocked, showing they were expected.
As Eva held the cold, rough metal, a faint, oily film stuck to her skin.
When the door swung open with a rough scrape, a wave of stale air and the strong smell of rust and spilled fuel greeted them, revealing a large, lit interior.
Somewhere deeper in the building, a drip echoed in the dark, steady like a heartbeat. Every sound, every sharp smell, pressed on Eva, making her more nervous.
Shadows gathered in the corners, hiding dangers they could not spot.
In the center of the space, sitting at a simple metal table like he was waiting for a business meeting, was Victor Chen.
He looked just like Marcus Webb had described: tall and elegant, with a timeless face and a perfectly fitted suit.
He stood up as Eva and Adrian came in, moving smoothly and without rush.
"Mrs. Fransis. Mr. Cavanaugh." His voice was cultured, pleasant, with just a hint of an accent Eva couldn't place. "Thank you for accepting my invitation."
"Your invitation?" Adrian's voice was flat. "Solomon Grant arranged this meeting."
"Solomon is a useful intermediary. But make no mistake, this meeting is happening because I wanted it to." Victor's smile was warm but empty. "Please, sit. We have much to discuss."
Eva studied him as they approached the table.
This was the man who controlled Helena. The man who pulled the strings of the Consortium. The man who had threatened her children.
He looked like a friendly uncle.
That made him much more frightening.
They sat across from Victor Chen, the metal table between them acting as a barrier for negotiation.
Adrian's security team stood around the warehouse, close enough to show their presence but far enough to let them talk.
It was a careful balance, showing they were not afraid but also admitting they did not have full control.
"Before we begin," Victor said, "I want to establish something. This meeting is happening because I believe we can reach a mutually beneficial arrangement. Not because I fear you."
"We're not here to threaten you," Eva replied, surprised by the steadiness of her own voice. "We're here to find out about Helena Park."
"Ah, yes. Helena." Victor's expression flickered with something that might have been amusement.
"She's become quite the liability, hasn't she? First, her crime exposure; then an investigation; now, an international search... It's very messy."
"Messy, you say, but aren't you the one protecting her?"
"No, you should get your facts right. I wasn't protecting her. I was protecting an asset. But assets that cause more problems than value..." He spread his hands. "In that case, reassessment becomes necessary."
Eva's heart quickened. "You're willing to give her up?"
"That depends on you. I'm willing to discuss terms. If we can reach an agreement… we might." Victor leaned back in his chair, studying them with those cold, calculating eyes.
He continued. "The Consortium has operated successfully for over forty years by maintaining certain... boundaries. People may say many things about us, but we don't harm children."
Eva scoffed, Victor ignored it, and continued, "We don't create unnecessary public spectacles. We don't let personal vendettas compromise larger operations."
"Are you sure we are talking about the same group that sent me a threatening letter with my children's photo? Both Consortium and Helena already violated those boundaries."
"Helena is a fool. She let her emotions override her judgment. Her feud against your family has become an obsession, and that obsession created this mess that threatens all of us." Victor's tone hardened slightly. "That is unacceptable."
"So what? You're cutting her loose," Adrian said.
"Well, I'll be honest. I'm considering cutting her loose. But…" Victor's gaze shifted between them. "The question is: what are you offering in exchange?"
He paused, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make Eva's pulse hammer in her throat. "Because if what you offer is not enough, if you leave me exposed, you should know that accidents can happen. People disappear. And sometimes, retribution finds its way into the lives of those who overestimate their leverage."
He smiled, pleasant and cold. "So I suggest you make your proposal count."
