Chapter 42 Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 42 Behind Closed Doors
Evelyn's POV.

I waited for an explanation but Adrian only groaned.

He took a few steps, trying to close the distance between us but I kept moving backward, until my back hit the desk.

“This marriage is just a deal,” he spat to my face, his voice low and menacing. “I saved your family and all you need to do is live quietly under my roof.”

My jaws clenched at his words, and the expression on my face darkened.

“You are not allowed to go through my stuff,” Adrian continued. “You see only what I want you to see.”

He spoke as if I were an object to be controlled. I'm expected to sit when he says so and move only at his command.

I slammed the papers and photo onto his chest and glared at him. “Then go fuck yourself!”

I stormed towards the door but when I got to the entrance, I turned back quickly.

Adrian was staring at me, his face expressionless.

“I will be going out to meet a friend tomorrow,” I said.

“I don't care if you approve it or not. I don't care if you let your drivers take me or not,” I paused briefly. “I just need you to know that I don't need your permission!”

The moment I was done talking, I walked out of the room without turning back.

I headed to my room, slamming the door shut loudly and lying on my back while the weight of everything that happened earlier rested on me.

How did he find out? How on earth is he getting to know everything?

Could it be….. cameras had been placed everywhere in the house?

I stood up quickly from the bed. I looked around, searching for hidden cameras. I bent under the bed but I couldn't find any.

I knew nothing, there was no way I would be able to find hidden cameras this way.

I heard the sound of my door opening and closing. I lifted my head from under the bed, turning to the door, my face clad with shock.

Mira was standing, blinking rapidly as she stared at me.

“Is there a problem, ma'am?” She asked.

I quickly stood up and straightened my dress. “No. Everything is fine.”

“What are you doing here? And why didn't you knock?” I quickly asked.

“I knocked twice ma'am,” she defended. “When I heard no response, I came in to check if you were asleep already.”

A part of me had thought that I had gotten caught by Adrian and that made me nervous.

“Why are you here?” I asked again.

“The boss told me to relay this to you,” Mira paused. “He said your outing tomorrow is approved.”

I scoffed. I already told him I won't be needing his permission.

“Thank you, I understand.” I dismissed Mira.

Mira walked towards the door, but stopped abruptly and turned towards me.

“If you are searching for hidden cameras in your room,” she said with a smile on her face. “Then do them with your lights off.”

I blinked. She knew what I was doing. When she was finally gone, I tried what she said.

I turned the lights off, looking around for any signs of hidden cameras but I couldn't find any.

I breathed out in relief and went back to sit on the bed.

There were no hidden cameras but how Adrian was getting to know everything that goes on in the house was what I didn't understand.

Could it be Mira then? The person who sees everything then reports to him?

A lot was on my mind but soon I was able to drift to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up to the call of breakfast.

“I'll be out by 11,” I said to Mira when she came to clear the plates. “Tell David to get the car ready.”

She bowed, took the plates away while I returned to my room.

I stayed on my phone, waiting for the time Nathaniel had scheduled for us to meet.

Mira came in after I finished my bath. “Do you have anything to say to me?” I asked her.
I moved to the closet, to get my dresses.

“No, ma'am,” she said, standing beside me. “I’m just here to help you pick your outfit.”

I looked at her surprised. Picking my dress wasn't necessary as it wasn't a date with Adrian but I didn't complain.

She checked through the closet with a smile on her face. “What type of friend are you meeting and how are you feeling now?”

Those questions surprised me. How does that have to do with picking a dress to wear?

I didn't ask questions but only answered hers.

“I'm meeting a childhood friend,” I said. “I should be feeling hatred for him at the moment but I don't think I do.”

“A childhood friend. It's a guy. And you are not sure about how you feel about seeing him,” she repeated like she was taking note.

“A light blue color dress for you then,” Mira picked the dress. Afterwards, she picked the heel and bag, and I was out of the mansion.

Like I had instructed, the car had been prepared. Soon, the car stopped in front of Mealiano, the restaurant Nate had chosen.

I walked out and David drove away to find a parking space. I walked towards the restaurant but was shocked to see reporters swarming out of nowhere and rushing over to me.

“That's Adrian Kane's wife!” One of them yelled.

“You are here to meet Mr. Nathaniel, aren't you?” another asked and I was taken aback by their sudden outburst.

Cameras flashed, reporters surrounded me, but their voices sounded distant, and my surroundings began to blur

Then a masculine hand pulled me into a solid body and my head got shielded with a jacket filled with cologne.

I couldn't lift my head to look up at the person who was holding me until we got into the restaurant.

When the hand finally let go of me, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, then I looked at the face of the man.
