Chapter 39 Dual Report
EVELYN'S POV
I looked at him, startled, then I glanced around the room. People were staring, waiting.
I turned to him again and swallowed hard. This was going past ‘just a slow’.
I forced a wide smile and took the steak from him with my mouth.
He smiled widely afterwards, one that didn't meet the eye.
Fucking hypocrite.
My lips curled into a smirk after I leaned back into the chair.
I also wrapped my fork with spaghetti and stretched it over to Adrian.
He sneered at me and smirked, one disguised as a smile for the camera.
“Here, say ah,” I said with the sweetest voice ever.
Adrian dropped his fork and looked at me with frustration.
He leaned in closer and took the fork into his mouth, his eyes fixed on me all through.
Again, we ate in silence.
People began to leave while some people still waited, watching us like we were making their day.
My legs were feeling cramped but it was barely up to an hour since we arrived.
I stretched my legs out of the table boundaries and resumed the meal. Adrian noticed it but said nothing even though it was out of class.
Moments later, some new customers entered the restaurant.
A customer almost tripped because of the leg I had placed outside the table.
He quickly turned and for a moment I thought he was going to yell at me.
“I'm sorry–" he started, then our eyes met, and he paused.
It was the store manager from the mall.
The reason behind this family drama.
“Oh, you!” the man exclaimed.
Then his gaze shifted to Adrian.
His smile vanished. His jaw tightened, lips pressed into a hard line as his eyes locked onto Adrian. His eyes burning with something far from fear.
My eyes trailed his body and he looked better than the last time we met.
He was dressed up nicely this time and it looked like he came with a blonde date.
“I see you’re having a nice time.” The man smirked. He dropped the politeness, placing his hands on his waist and scoffing loudly.
Cameras clicked faster and louder.
“You ruined people's lives, closed down the mall and here you are having a nice time? Not even just a meal, you are spending a fortune on lunch?” The store manager yelled, pointing accusingly at us.
Just like that, the perfect lunch got ruined.
I looked at Adrian, anticipating how he'd resolve this now. We came to debunk one scandal and another was about to break out.
He said nothing, and just looked behind me, giving a signal to someone I couldn't see.
I didn't to tilt my head, to avoid drawing attention to whoever it was.
“Hey, Mister…..” someone called.
I snapped my face to the side and security officers were walking towards the store manager.
“What? You don't want me to talk?” The store manager turned to Adrian, speaking quickly.
Before he could say another word, two security officers got a hold of him while he resisted.
His date shook her head and walked past him. “I can't believe I was going to hang out with someone like you,” she muttered.
She looked at him pathetically, her face twisted in disgust as she walked out.
“Wait….hey!” The store manager yelled after her but she didn't stop. The security officers dragged him out of the restaurant.
I looked around and everyone was holding their phones, taking pictures and making videos.
I ignored them and continued with my meal. The rest of lunch was done in silence.
Adrian stood up first, extending his hand to me. “Time to leave, dear.”
I took his hand with a smile and we both walked out of the restaurant.
Inside the car, he let out a heavy breath and groaned.
I didn't speak, I just observed.
“Drive.” he commanded, his voice cold and contrasting to the way he had acted all through our stay inside the restaurant..
“Yes, sir,” the driver replied and ignited the car without delay.
While the car was in motion, I looked out through the window. Adrian was on his phone, his keyboard getting clanged aggressively.
Moments later, he took the phone to his ears. “Check the progress. Have every video involving the store manager deleted.”
I didn't act like I was interested in his conversation and he continued taking numerous calls till we got to the mansion.
He didn't make an attempt to walk out of the car and I wasn't expecting him to get the car door opened for me.
“Drive back to the office once she's out” he instructed the driver, acting like I was invincible.
I would have scoffed but it wasn't the first time so I wasn't bothered.
I let go of the handle and turned to look at him.
“Are you going somewhere?” I asked.
His face snapped, he had dark eyes, cold expression and eyes filled with hatred for me.
“The office. I'm not a jobless man.”
I didn't push further. I got out of the car and walked into the mansion without turning back.
“Welcome back, ma’am,” Mira greeted. “How was your lunch date?”
Date? Absurd, but I answered anyway.
“Fine, Mira,” I replied, walking towards the stairs. “I need a bath right now.”
I finished ascending the stairs and stood in front of my room but as I placed my hand on the doorknob, my eyes caught a figure just appearing at the beginning of the hallway.
I turned and Dera was standing. When our eyes locked, she bowed her head slightly and greeted.
I turned towards her fully and she walked towards me. I gave instructions before leaving. Was she able to find anything?
“Welcome na’am,” Dera bowed again. “I searched through his study like you wanted,” she said in a hushed tone.
“So, did you find anything?” I whispered back.
“Yes, ma’am.” My eyes lit up at her words.
She slipped a hand into her clothes and pulled out a folded paper, pressing it into my palm. I scanned it, and my forehead knitted.
It was a medical report of a ‘Nicholas Reid’.
Beneath it was another medical report.
A report for Adrian Kane
Same patient details, same records, but different names.
My breath hitched.
Then I saw a photo folded between the reports.
It was a photograph of me, smiling at a beach. Next to me was Eva, although her face was blurred, it was unmistakable.
My fingers tightened around the picture.
How did Adrian get this?
