Chapter 33 Adrian Knows
Evelyn’s POV.
“I’ll reach out to you,” Nate said.
We both went silent and my eyes wandered everywhere in the room except his face.
I waited impatiently for him to leave, tapping my fingers against the table. While I waited, all that went through my head was memories of our past.
He broke the silence and his voice startled me. “I heard about a mask party.” I turned to him, raising an eyebrow. “Yeah?”
“I was invited. Will you be going?” Nate asked.
I turned away from him and nodded my head before I gave an audible response. “Yes.”
“Will your husband be there?” he asked.
I turned to him again, looking confused. Why is he curious about that?
“I don't think he will be going. He doesn't attend stuff like that,” I responded.
I was still going to ask Adrian like Cecelia had asked me to but I already knew what the answer would be. He won't be attending.
Nathaniel wanted to respond but before he could speak, a voice rose behind us.
“I'll be coming. Is there any problem with that, Mr. Quinn?” That was Adrian.
I turned immediately, surprised to see him standing behind us. His hands were in his pocket and his aura…. the way he looked at Nate… sent me swallowing hard.
Nate moved away from the table, putting his hands into his pockets as he straightened his back.
“That would be nice, then. It's a mask party, I want to see how you'll look on a mask,” Nate said.
“Ah,” Nate exclaimed. “You've always worn a mask, haven't you?”
That made me raise a brow. I didn't quite understand what he meant but I didn't ask. I've learnt to stay quiet in situations where my opinion wouldn't be appreciated and this was one of those situations.
“What are you talking about, Mr. Quinn?” Adrian chuckled. “You sound like you know something about me which I don't.”
I also noticed that in the way he said the words. Like he also knows the secrets everyone talks about that Adrian Kane is so bent on hiding.
“That was a joke, Mr. Kane. You didn't need to take it so seriously.” Nathaniel laughed again.
Something was fishy somewhere but I just couldn't place it.
Adrian held my hand, intertwining my fingers with his and that made my body stiffen.
“My wife and I will leave now. I hope you enjoy the rest of the party,” Adrian said. “Welcome back to the country, Mr Nathaniel.”
He didn't wait for Nate to give a response before he dragged me away.
I had my eyes on Nate as I walked, my face refusing to look at the direction I was heading until we got to a curve and he stopped being in sight.
Adrian led me to the car and his hand was still on mine.
I wanted to tell him to get his hand off me because it feels weird having him holding me like this but I said nothing.
I could see some reporters lurking around and I knew our marriage was for the public to see how lovely we were.
He opened the car door and let go of my hand. I slid in and he wasted no time in getting in beside me.
David drove the car before he was even instructed and soon, we were at the mansion.
We didn't stay long at the party. It hadn't even been three hours since we left the house and now we were back.
I'm sure we left even before they could get the main theme of the party done but I liked it like that, the gathering felt like I didn't belong there and also Nate was there, I didn't want to have to face him more than I already did.
Adrian suddenly started acting like I was invinsible when we got into the house.
Mira was in the sitting room when I walked in after him. She bowed deeply to the both of us but didn't say a word and I suddenly felt like venting about how frustrated I was at the party to her.
I didn't know when we got so close that I now felt like telling her things.
Adrian walked up the stairs but my voice stopped him. I had a question that had been tugging at the top of my lungs since we had been in the car.
“Are you really going to attend the mask party?” I asked.
My voice was low and I knew I was being careful not to offend him. He hadn't spoken since he got into the car and I didn't know the kind of mood he was in at the moment.
He stopped in his tracks and turned to look at me. His face was still unreadable but his lips curled slightly into a smirk.
“Why? You don't want me to come since your ex-boyfriend will also be coming?” He asked.
“No, that's not—” I paused, recalling and replaying what he said in my head again.
He just called Nathaniel my ex-boyfriend. Goddamn! Nate didn't introduce himself as my ex-boyfriend in that party as far as I could recall!
I glanced at Adrian and the surprise on my face was so clear.
“How did you…?” I couldn't even bring myself to complete my sentence and ask.
He stepped back towards me with just two steps before he stopped again. He stared at me but he said nothing.
I could only stare back at him, unable to tell what he had in mind. What the hell was he thinking right now?
Again, he stepped closer towards me and this time, he left no space between us.
He lifted my chin and I sucked in a deep breath.
“Look into my eyes, sweetheart,” he said, making me gulp. “Nothing gets past Adrian Kane.”
