Chapter 30 He's Back
Evelyn's POV.
I stood frozen as Adrian's face darkened, his forehead creasing.
Cassandra took that as a cue to continue. “She came to me. She wanted to get information about you.”
Liar!
“She's lying!” I stepped in. “Don't believe her!”
Adrian looked at me but the look in his eyes was so terrifying. My voice successfully attracted the attention of the people around.
I moved closer to them, ignoring Adrian's look. I turned to Cassandra, my eyes dripping with venom.
“You messaged me several times!”
“You wanted to talk about his secrets! I didn't ask you anything prior to that!” I spat.
Cassandra smirked and snatched her phone from Adrian's hands.
She lifted the screen for me to see. “What's this call log?” She asked.
“You called me. You told me to tell you about the secrets he's hiding!” she said calmly.
She turned the phone to herself and clicked on it a few times before she turned it back to me.
“And this?” She asked. “This is footage of you getting into my car”
I stared closely at the video and my eyes blinked. It was footage from the morning when I went to the mall.
It was truly her car but she was the one who told me to get in.
People murmured in the background. I had the urge to hit her, but I controlled myself, clenching my fist tightly.
Cassandra knew what she was doing. She called me out just to accuse me in a public place.
She obviously knew about this gala before she started spamming me with messages, and then she asked me to meet with her in the parking lot. She took the camera footage from the mall just to frame me.
“You are lying, Cassandra!” I yelled, but there was no way anyone would believe me. I had no evidence but the person I was arguing with had two pieces of evidence to prove I really was the one who met with her and not the other way around.
Adrian locked eyes with me, then his expression suddenly changed.
“Cassandra,” he called out calmly.
“I believe my wife and that's all that matters,” Adrian said, pulling me closer to himself. “Try to frame her again, and I’ll make you taste hell.”
I liked the look on Cassandra's face when she heard him. Her eyes turned in shock and her hands trembled.
She must have expected Adrian to believe her and talk back at me in front of everyone.
Adrian led me out of the scene with his hand on my lower back.
While we walked, he leaned in closer. “Don't think I believe you.”
My stomach dropped.
“You left the house when I told you not to,” he said. “I told you to stop digging, but you don't want to.”
“Adrian, I….” He cut me off.
“We'll talk about this at home, not here,” His tone was dark and scary.
“I only defended you because of the cameras. Let that stick.”
He released his hold on me and walked away, leaving me behind.
My fingers curled around the glass of champagne in my hand and I blinked fast to hold back tears. I swallowed hard.
I didn't know what he'd do to me. He already told me not to leave the house but I didn't listen.
Cecelia's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “Cassandra is such a pain in the neck.”
“I know she is,” I smiled. “She's doing everything she can to ruin my marriage.”
“Yes, she's been spreading rumors about you too.” Cecelia twisted her face in disgust. “She's just jealous of you.”
I smiled, unable to give a response. I only stared at Cassandra who had gotten over what she just did and had moved over to other women gossiping and laughing with them.
All fakes.
Just a way of building connections and trying hard to belong.
I also didn't think I belonged here. The people here looked too wealthy to be compared to my class.
I could only enjoy this privilege because I came as Adrian Kane's wife. But there was nothing to enjoy, not when I felt out of place.
Adrian also ended in a circle of men who laughed and talked together. I kept my eyes on him but could count the times he parted his lips to speak.
He saw me staring at him and walked back to me. “Stop looking like an outcast, Evelyn. Put a fucking smile on your face.”
Yes, this man cares about how people see him, and his wife looking like an outcast doesn't sit well with him.
“I feel like I don't belong here,” I said truthfully. “When can we go home?”
His expression didn't change. “We go home when the party ends.”
Without another word, he turned and ended up in another circle of men who were discussing like tonight was the most happy moment of their lives.
I was still staring at Adrian when someone walked in front of me but before she could walk past me, she let go of the champagne flute in her hand.
The champagne spilled on my dress and the glass fell at my feet, shattering into pieces.
I was startled and instinctively moved back, my eyes darting to the person who stood before me.
Cassandra. Goddamn! She's a pest.
“Oh, my!” Her hands went to her mouth as she stared with her eyes wide open in pretence.
“I'm so sorry, my hand slipped,” she apologized.
Eyes were now fixed on us and from the corner of my eyes, I could see Adrian approaching.
I swallowed hard. Slipped? That was a fucking lie. She did that intentionally.
The smirk that appeared on her lips afterwards confirmed it.
Someone appeared in front of me, blocking my view of Cassandra.
He dipped his hand into his pocket, brought out a handkerchief and wiped my soaked neck with it.
“What do we do? You are drenched in champagne.” he said.
Those hands… That scent… The voice…
They weren't Adrian's. But they sounded very familiar.
I lifted my head to where the voice came from.
Nathaniel!
