The Mole Is in Place
The Mole Is in Place
Chapter 136
Jason’s POV
Why the fuck would Annika want to leave for the office at this hour? And… while she’s with me?
I watched her as she flashed me a bright smile and slipped on her clothes. Then she wrapped her hands around me and pressed a kiss to my chin before waving me goodbye.
And I just stood there after she left, my feet frozen to the ground as I remained lost in thought.
Her story about her mum earlier checked out, but now that I thought about how quickly she left after whispering so softly over the phone, it did feel a bit off.
“Well…” I breathed, running a hand through my hair. Whatever it is that she was up to, I didn’t need to worry.
Especially when I know I’ve already won.
With a small smile, I picked up my clothes and put them on, getting ready to head to the company and check on a few things.
I didn’t want to go home yet, so running an unplanned inspection didn’t sound like a bad idea.
When I was done getting ready and paying for the hotel room, I drove to the company. I expected to find a few lazy workers not doing their job, but when I got there, everyone was working.
I inspected every department, hoping to find an unlucky person whom I could use to catch a little fun, but unfortunately for me, I caught no one lacking.
It wasn’t long after I had settled back into my office that I heard a knock on the door, coupled with a greeting and request to come in. My brows furrowed in confusion as I stared at the door for a moment, before straightening in my chair saying, “Come in.”
Immediately the door creaked open, and a young man with glasses and neatly pressed clothes slid inside. “Thank you, sir,” he said in appreciation as he walked towards me, but I just sat in my chair waiting for him to get to the point.
Fortunately for him, he began speaking immediately. “I came here to inform you that a call just came in from the charity organization handlers, and they said they needed supplies, especially for the children in the orphanage.”
My brows pinched together as I stared him up and down. Then I leaned back into my chair, resting my right hand on the armrest while lazily looking up at him. “And why exactly are you telling me this?”
I watched as the man’s eyes widened in suprise and he immediately adjusted his glasses, looking away from my gaze. “Because… I—I thought you should know—”
“You thought I should know?” I cut him off before he could finish. “Can’t you see that I’m busy?” I gestured toward the document in front of me before looking up in time to see his throat bobbing with a hard swallow.
“Can’t you see that I’m in the middle of something?” I raised my brows at him, which only made him clamp his mouth shut.
Seeing he wasn’t planning to utter another word, I shook my head slightly, moving my paperweight from one side of the table to the other. And then I picked up my pen again. “Go and inform the financial secretary. They’re the ones meant to handle this.”
“Yes sir,” he said immediately, not wasting another second before moving towards the door.
As soon as he left, I returned my attention to the document in front of me. But as time went by, my eyes began to ache, alerting me that I needed to take a break and didn’t need to be putting myself through all of this.
So I packed up my things, and finally went back home—not before stopping by a few stores to get myself a few things.
Of course I had every right to spend the money I had earned on myself.
Father was still pissed with what I had done. His annoyance literally poured out of him in waves, so he couldn’t even hide it. Not that he even tried.
The only reason he hadn’t said anything yet, was because he just simply couldn’t. After all, we were both after the same thing.
However, it still surprised me when I passed by the living room, and I didn’t feel a hard glare on my back. I turned to see him sitting in front of the TV with the remote in his hand. It was obvious that he noticed my gaze, but he didn’t say anything about it. The normal him would’ve returned it with a hard, full-on glare and probably left the living room.
So, I decided to test the waters. “Is everything alright, Father?"
He blinked slowly, lifting the remote to change the channel before saying, “Why do you ask?”
I pulled my head back slightly at his reply, surprised that he’d answered me. “Because,” I drawled. “I’m not sensing as much animosity from you as I normally do.”
A few seconds passed before he muted the television and turned to me. I held his gaze as I moved to sit down beside him. “Mhmm.” He hummed before turning the volume up again. “Well, if you must know, I just wanted to tell you that I’ve already finalized everything. The mole has been put in place, and he’s going to ensure Jett loses the game before they even get to the semi-finals."
“Oh?” A smile pulled at my lips as I crossed one leg over the other and relaxed my arm on the couch’s backrest. “So that’s why I didn’t sense the anger from you. You wanted me to speak to you first.” I let out a laugh.
Parents could be very funny at times.
He narrowed his eyes at me before fixing his gaze on the TV screen, not wanting to admit that I was right. "Well, that’s great to hear.” I grinned, changing the topic, even though I still wanted to tease my father. “Very soon my brother’s hard work will all go down the drain, and we’ll both be there to watch.” I felt a thrill rush through me at the thought of it.
As I chatted and laughed with Father, my eyes wandered to the mini-bar and I decided that this news was celebration worthy. It definitely deserved a drink.
I pushed myself off the couch and made my way towards the mini-bar, already reaching for the expensive whiskey Father kept tucked away for “special occasions.”
I turned to Father with the bottle of whiskey in my hand, and the smile that touched his lips told me he was thinking the same too.
After I poured myself a few glasses, along with my father, of course, I suddenly felt the urge to go clubbing tonight, as this didn’t feel like enough for me.
I later booked myself a reservation at a club for the night. And as my luck would have it, they were hosting one of their once-in-a-while private events. The place was packed wall to wall, music pulsing through the air so hard I could feel it in my chest.
Yes, this was exactly what I needed.
This was enough for me.
Colored lights swept across the crowded dance floor, caught on glittering dresses, expensive watches, and half-finished drinks raised into the air. The energy was wild, loud, and even almost addictive, pushing me to try my luck with new girls and see if I could get one of them into my bedroom.
I was making one of them laugh hard at my joke when I caught a glimpse of someone… familiar. I shifted my gaze to her, straining my eyes as I took her in, and then, I felt something settle low in my stomach.
She looked like… one of the girls from Dunrick.
I smiled to myself, letting out a humorless laugh as I shook my head before looking again, as there was a high chance that I could be hallucinating.
I looked in the same direction, straining my eyes once again, but… I didn’t see her.
I couldn’t see her.
She was… gone.
