Chapter 12 Twelve

Chapter 12 Twelve
Night settled over the packhouse like a heavy blanket, but I could not rest. Orion stayed close, refusing to leave my side, and Lola lingered in the hallway in case anything happened. The ache in my chest had eased slightly, but it was still there, simmering beneath my skin like a faint reminder of everything I could not escape.

I lay on my bed fully awake while Orion sat in the chair next to me, elbows on his knees, watching me with worried eyes. The dim glow from the lamp cast shadows across his face, making him look older, more tired, more broken.

He finally spoke, voice low and thick with emotion. “Does it hurt now.”

“A little,” I admitted. “Not like before. Just a pressure. A reminder.”

Orion nodded slowly, his jaw tightening. “He is still near.”

The words felt like a knife twisting inside me. “Is he still at the border.”

Orion hesitated. “He is close. Not on the border. But close enough for the bond to react.”

I pressed a hand against my chest. “Why is it doing this. Why does it feel like I cannot breathe unless he is near.”

Orion ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “Because the bond is trying to complete itself. It wants you together. It wants you connected.”

“I do not want him,” I whispered fiercely. “I want you.”

His eyes softened with a mixture of love and pain. “I know. But wanting me does not stop what you feel for him.”

I shook my head. “I do not feel anything for him except confusion and fear.”

“Then why does it hurt when he is far.” His voice was gentle, not accusatory.

I looked down at my trembling hands. “I do not know.”

Orion rose from the chair and sat on the bed beside me. His fingers traced my jaw slowly. When he leaned down to kiss me, I felt my heart lean toward him out of longing and memory. His lips were warm and familiar, full of unspoken devotion.

I kissed him back, wanting the world to disappear, wanting Ezra’s shadow to vanish. The kiss deepened and Orion pulled me gently against him with arms that wanted nothing more than to hold me safe. For a moment my mind quieted. For a moment all I felt was Orion.

But then the ache in my chest flared sharply.

My breath hitched and I pulled back, pressing a hand against my heart. “Not again,” I whispered.

Orion froze, his expression breaking. “He is pulling you.”

“I am trying to resist.”

Orion swallowed hard. “Do not pretend you are doing something wrong. This is not your fault.”

His kindness made the pain worse.

A knock sounded at the door. Lola entered quietly. “Ezra is moving closer. The guards cannot stop him. He is not attacking but the bond is reacting too strongly. Zara, if you do not speak to him soon, this is going to get worse.”

I shook my head wildly. “I do not want to see him. I cannot.”

Lola kneeled beside the bed. “This is not about wanting. This is about the reality of the bond. The more you fight it, the more your body will react. You are hurting yourself.”

Orion glared at Lola. “You are giving her no choice.”

Lola looked back at him with equal intensity. “Because there is no choice. The mate bond forces itself. She cannot ignore it.”

Orion closed his eyes in pain. “I cannot let her go to him.”

Lola placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. “You are not letting her go. You are helping her survive.”

His breath trembled.

I whispered numbly, “I will go. But not alone.”

Orion nodded stiffly. “You will not go anywhere without me.”

Lola hurried to gather a few guards to escort us. I rose from the bed, legs trembling, heart pounding painfully. Orion took my hand in his and squeezed it tightly.

“Whatever happens,” he whispered, “I am here.”

The simple words steadied me enough to move.

We walked through the packhouse slowly, guarded by warriors who looked at me with a mix of pity and fear. Rumors had already spread. They all knew. They all felt the shift in the air, the tension between two alphas, the mate bond threaded between us like a living force.

The night air outside was cold enough to sting my skin. Orion stepped closer, shielding me from the wind as we approached the treeline. The ache in my chest grew sharper the closer we got. Not unbearable like before, but steady and pulsing, like something waking inside me that I did not want awake.

Then I saw him.

Ezra stood beneath the trees with his arms behind his back, watching us approach. He did not look triumphant or smug. His expression was calm, steady, patient. As if he had known I would come. As if he had been waiting for exactly this moment.

My breath caught the instant our eyes met. The bond surged inside me like a gentle wave of heat and recognition. My heart beat in perfect sync with his. I hated it. I hated how natural it felt. I hated that my body responded before my mind could.

Ezra stepped forward carefully. “Zara.”

The way he said my name felt like a touch.

I tightened my grip on Orion’s hand.

“Do not,” I whispered to myself. “Do not react to him.”

Ezra paused a respectful distance away. “You came.”

His voice carried warmth that settled in my chest. I wanted to reject it. I wanted to turn away.

Orion positioned himself slightly in front of me. “She came because the bond is hurting her. Not because she wants to see you.”

Ezra nodded once. “I understand that.”

His eyes returned to me. “Are you in pain.”

I clenched my jaw. “Yes.”

His expression softened in a way that made my breath stumble. “I am sorry.”

The apology startled me. I had expected arrogance or indifference. Not regret.

“You do not want this,” I whispered.

Ezra shook his head slowly. “I did not expect it. But I will not reject it.”

Orion stiffened. “She does not want you.”

Ezra kept his voice steady. “She does not know what she wants because she is still fighting the bond.”

“I know what I want,” I said sharply. “I want my life back.”

Ezra inhaled deeply. “You cannot go back. The bond has already chosen.”

Orion stepped closer. “She can choose me. Bond or not.”

Ezra’s gaze met his with quiet strength. “Love does not replace a mate bond. You know that.”

Orion’s eyes shone with pain. “I will fight it.”

Ezra’s expression softened, almost sorrowful. “You will lose.”

Orion’s voice broke. “Maybe. But I will still fight.”

The silence between them burned.

Ezra turned back to me, his tone careful. “You asked what to do. The truth is simple. You and I need to complete the bond.”

My breath caught painfully. “No.”

Ezra nodded slowly as if he had expected the answer. “Then you need to be near me often enough for the bond to remain calm.”

“What does that mean,” I whispered.

“It means you cannot avoid me,” Ezra said. “Not for long.”

Orion growled softly. “She is not living with you.”

Ezra held his hands open, calm and unthreatening. “I am not taking her from the pack. I only want her to survive this.”

I felt a tear slip down my cheek. “Why me.”

Ezra’s voice lowered until it was barely more than a breath. “Because I felt something the moment you touched me. And I do not feel anything easily. But I felt you.”

His words wrapped around me with dangerous warmth. My chest tightened in response. Not in pain. In something else. Something deeper.

Orion’s body shook with restrained emotion. “Do not listen to him.”

Ezra continued softly. “You are my mate, Zara. No matter how frightened you are, no matter how much you fight, that truth will only grow stronger.”

My knees weakened.

Ezra took one small step forward. “Let me ease the bond.”

Orion pulled me backward. “No.”

Ezra did not argue. He simply looked at me. Only me.

“Tell me to step back,” he said quietly. “Tell me you feel nothing. Tell me the bond does not whisper to you.”

I opened my mouth.

But no words came.

Because the bond pulsed inside me in answer, warm and steady and undeniable.

Ezra smiled very softly, not with victory but with relief. “There it is.”

Orion let out a sound that could only be described as heartbreak.

I turned to him, tears in my eyes. “I do not want to hurt you.”

“I know,” he whispered. “But you are.”

Ezra reached out a hand toward me, slow and gentle. He did not touch me. He only waited.

“Zara,” he whispered, “come to me.”

My heart pulled violently toward him.

I shook my head desperately. “I cannot. Orion is right here.”

Ezra’s voice softened even more. “Then come as far as you feel safe.”

I stepped forward.

One step.

Just one.

The bond hummed in satisfaction.

Ezra exhaled softly, relieved.

Orion turned away, shoulders shaking.

Lola covered her mouth to hold back a sob.

I stood between two futures, heart split open and raw.

Ezra whispered again, softer than the wind. “Good. Now breathe.”

I inhaled shakily. The ache faded.

Ezra smiled with quiet warmth. “You are alright.”

I whispered the truth I could no longer deny. “I feel you.”

“Yes,” Ezra said gently. “And I feel you.”

The bond glowed between us like a hidden thread.

Alive.

Real.

Unbreakable.

Orion’s voice cracked behind me. “Zara. Do not leave with him.”

Ezra looked at me, waiting.

My heart beat painfully.

“I am not leaving,” I whispered.

Orion let out a breath of relief.

Ezra nodded once in acceptance. “Then I will come to you tomorrow. We will take this slowly.”

He stepped backward into the trees. The bond tugged but did not hurt.

His final words lingered in the air long after he vanished.

“You are my mate. And I will wait for you.”

My heart answered with a painful pull.

Orion’s arms came around me from behind, trembling.

“Zara,” he whispered, “please do not love him.”

I closed my eyes as tears fell.

“I do not want to,” I whispered.

But the bond pulsed again.

And deep inside me, something whispered that wanting had nothing to do with fate.
