58: Alpha Queen trial
58: Alpha Queen trial
Lena.
I was in our chambers, preparing for my meeting with Selene, when Maya burst in without knocking—an unprecedented breach of protocol that immediately put me on alert.
"Alpha Queen," she gasped, clearly having run to reach me. "You must come quickly. The Alpha King has called an emergency council session. It concerns you directly."
Cold dread washed through me. "What's happened?"
"I don't know details," Maya admitted, helping me into more formal attire suitable for a council appearance. "Only that Elder Matthias requested the session, claiming to have discovered evidence of... disloyalty... within the pack leadership."
He knew. Somehow, Matthias had realized we'd accessed his safe and was moving to counterattack before we could use our evidence against him.
"Is Kieran aware I'm being summoned?" I asked, forcing calm into my voice as Maya secured the silver circlet in my hair—the formal symbol of my position as Alpha Queen.
"The summons came from him directly," Maya confirmed, her expression worried. "Alpha Queen, something feels wrong about this. The fortress is buzzing with tension."
I shared her concern but kept my expression composed. "Thank you for the warning, Maya. Whatever happens in this council session, remember where your true loyalties should lie—with the pack's wellbeing, not any individual's ambition."
She nodded solemnly, understanding my implicit message. If things went badly in this council session, Maya might be one of the few allies I could count on.
The walk to the council chamber felt interminable, each step bringing me closer to a confrontation I hadn't anticipated facing so soon. Pack members we passed in the corridors fell silent as we approached, their expressions ranging from curiosity to outright hostility. The rumors had clearly taken deep root.
At the massive doors to the council chamber, I paused to gather myself. Whatever awaited inside, I needed to face it with the dignity befitting my position. I nodded to the guards, who opened the doors with ceremonial slowness.
The scene that greeted me made my blood run cold.
The full council was assembled in the ancient semicircular chamber, twelve elders seated on elevated benches facing the center floor. Kieran stood on the raised Alpha platform, his expression stonier than I'd ever seen it. To one side stood Dominic, his posture rigid and face carefully blank. On the other side, looking dramatically distraught, stood Selene.
And in the center of the floor, displayed on a small table for all to see, lay what appeared to be clothing items—a man's shirt and a woman's nightgown—along with several sealed evidence containers.
Maya's soft gasp behind me confirmed my worst fears before Kieran even spoke.
"Alpha Queen Lena," he intoned formally, using my full title in a way that created immediate distance between us. "You have been summoned to answer accusations of disloyalty to your mate bond and betrayal of pack trust."
The formal language sent ice through my veins. This wasn't merely a discussion or inquiry—it was the beginning of a trial.
I moved forward with measured steps, taking my position in the center of the chamber before the display table. Keeping my head high, I met Kieran's gaze directly.
"I stand ready to answer any accusations," I replied with equal formality. "Though I would know what evidence prompts such serious charges."
Elder Matthias rose from his position at the center of the council bench, his expression a perfect mask of reluctant duty.
"Alpha Queen," he began gravely, "it is with great regret that the council brings these matters before you. However, evidence has come to light that cannot be ignored given your position of influence within our pack."
He gestured to the items on the table. "Before you are articles of clothing recovered from a secluded cabin on the far western edge of our territory. Scent evidence preserved within these sealed containers confirms these items were worn by yourself and Lord Dominic during intimate encounters at this location."
Murmurs rippled through the gathered witnesses as I stared at the alleged evidence, momentarily speechless with shock. The shirt did indeed look like something Dominic might wear, and the nightgown—while not one I recognized—was similar enough to my usual style that others might believe it mine.
"This is fabricated evidence," I stated firmly, finding my voice. "I have never been to any cabin with Dominic, intimate or otherwise. These items are not mine, nor have I ever worn them."
"The scent evidence suggests otherwise," Matthias countered smoothly. "As verified by three independent werewolf sensers from neutral packs, these items carry the unmistakable combined scents of yourself and Lord Dominic, mingled in ways that can only occur during physical intimacy."
More murmurs, louder now. I looked to Kieran, expecting to see at least some doubt in his expression, some willingness to question this supposed evidence. Instead, his face remained impassive, giving nothing away.
"These items were discovered by Selene," Matthias continued, gesturing toward her. "Who came forward out of loyalty to the pack despite her recent... change in circumstances."
Selene stepped forward, her expression a masterpiece of reluctant duty. "Alpha Queen," she addressed me with perfect deference, "I discovered these items while gathering my personal belongings from a meditation cabin I occasionally used. The cabin is registered to Elder Matthias, who graciously allowed me its use during my time in the Alpha King's service."
The calculated nature of the setup became instantly clear. Of course the cabin belonged to Matthias—allowing him complete control over planting the evidence and "discovering" it through Selene.
"And you immediately recognized these items as belonging to the Alpha Queen and Lord Dominic?" I challenged, not bothering to hide my skepticism. "Despite having limited personal interaction with either of us?"
"The scents were unmistakable," Selene replied, her performance flawless. "As Alpha Queen, your scent is known throughout the fortress. And Lord Dominic's bloodline connection to the Alpha King makes his scent equally distinctive."
I turned to face the council directly. "This is a deliberate fabrication designed to discredit me and Lord Dominic. Consider the timing—immediately after the Alpha King and I conducted an audit of Elder Matthias's financial records, raising questions about discrepancies in border expenditures."
Matthias's expression didn't waver. "An unfortunate coincidence, perhaps. But the evidence stands on its own merits, regardless of timing."
"Evidence that conveniently appeared in your cabin," I pointed out. "Discovered by a woman recently dismissed from her position by my request, who suddenly claims loyalty to pack interests above personal grievance."
Murmurs among the witnesses suggested my words were finding some purchase. I pressed the advantage.
"If the council requires evidence of conspiracy, they need look no further than Elder Matthias's private safe, where documents detail his collaboration with Viktor Volkov to force a succession challenge when the Alpha King's grace period expires."
This direct accusation caused an immediate uproar in the chamber. Council members exchanged alarmed glances while pack witnesses broke into agitated conversations. Matthias's expression flickered briefly with what might have been concern before he regained control.
"A desperate deflection," he countered loudly over the noise. "And an admission that you illegally accessed a council elder's private safe—a serious violation of pack protocols."
"An access conducted under my authority as Alpha King," Kieran finally spoke, his voice cutting through the din. The chamber fell instantly silent, all eyes turning to him. "During a legitimate financial audit where discrepancies were noted."
Hope flared within me at his words. Despite the formal distance he'd established at the beginning of this session, he was publicly acknowledging our joint investigation of Matthias.
"The documents discovered in Elder Matthias's safe detail a conspiracy to manufacture a succession crisis," Kieran continued, his tone measured but authoritative. "A conspiracy that would benefit Viktor Volkov of the Eastern Ridge pack, with whom Matthias has established family connections."
Matthias remained unruffled. "I maintain regular correspondence with many pack leaders, including Viktor Volkov. Such communications are part of my duties as senior council elder. Any discussion of succession protocols would be entirely appropriate given the approaching conclusion of the traditional grace period."
He turned to address the full council. "However, we digress from the matter at hand—the evidence of the Alpha Queen's betrayal with the Alpha King's own blood relative. A betrayal that, if confirmed, has significant implications for the stability of our leadership."
