55: he doesn't believe me!
55: he doesn't believe me!
Lena.
Put that way, our actions did seem questionable. But I refused to back down. "The truth is that I'm trying to salvage what's left of our relationship while you're sleeping in separate quarters and treating me like a suspect rather than your mate."
My words hit home; I saw him flinch slightly before his expression hardened again.
"You are my mate," he said tightly. "Which is why I expected loyalty rather than conspiracy."
"This isn't conspiracy," Dominic interjected, his tone respectful but firm. "We're trying to uncover one that threatens both you and the pack's stability. Think, Kieran. What does Matthias gain if you believe these rumors about Lena and me?"
"My trust in both of you destroyed," Kieran answered immediately.
"And what happens to the pack if that trust is destroyed?" Dominic pressed. "If you banish or execute me for treachery? If you reject your mate bond with Lena?"
Kieran's eyes narrowed. "The pack would continue under my leadership."
"Until your grace period expires without an heir," Dominic persisted. "And then?"
Understanding dawned visibly on Kieran's face as he made the connections we'd already discussed. "Succession challenges," he murmured. "With you eliminated as a contender."
"And Matthias positioning his own candidate," I added quietly. "Someone he can control, with proven fertility to justify the transition."
Kieran was silent for a long moment, his gaze moving between Dominic and me as he processed this theory. "It's plausible," he finally acknowledged. "But still rests entirely on Selene's unverified claim about documents in Matthias's private quarters."
"Which is why we need to confirm whether they exist," I said. "We need access to that safe."
"No," Kieran stated firmly. "What we need is concrete evidence before making accusations against a council elder. Speculative theories and secondhand information from a potentially vengeful source aren't enough."
"Then how do we get concrete evidence?" I challenged. "By waiting and doing nothing while Matthias continues spreading these rumors? By keeping me isolated and treated like a prisoner in my own home?"
Kieran's expression softened marginally. "You're not a prisoner, Lena."
"No?" I retorted. "I can't leave the fortress. I can't speak privately with Dominic. My every movement is monitored. What would you call it?"
He sighed heavily, some of his anger visibly dissipating. "Protection. Caution. Perhaps excessive, but motivated by concern, not distrust."
"Yet you moved to separate sleeping quarters," I pointed out quietly. "That suggests more than just caution."
Pain flickered across his features. "I needed space to think clearly. The rumors... they affected me more than I wanted to admit. Made me question things I shouldn't have questioned."
It was the closest he'd come to acknowledging his doubts about my fidelity, and the admission stung despite its honesty.
"And now?" Dominic asked carefully. "Having found us together despite your restrictions, what do you believe?"
Kieran's gaze settled on his cousin. "I believe you wouldn't risk entering these chambers against my direct orders without significant cause. Your loyalty to me has never been in question."
"And me?" I asked, holding my breath.
Kieran turned to me, his expression complex. "I believe I've been allowing old patterns to dictate my response to a new situation. Responding to potential betrayal with isolation and control rather than partnership and trust. That was... a mistake."
The admission surprised me. Kieran rarely acknowledged errors in judgment, particularly regarding his protective instincts.
"So what happens now?" I asked, hope cautiously rising.
Kieran moved further into the room, closing the door behind him. "Now, we all sit down and discuss this theory thoroughly. Together. As we should have from the beginning."
Maya quickly set another place at the table as Kieran joined us, the atmosphere shifting from confrontational to cautiously collaborative. As we shared the meal, we outlined everything we knew or suspected about Matthias's potential involvement in the rumors.
"The timing aligns with his interests," Kieran acknowledged after hearing our full reasoning. "The seven-year grace period ends in four months. Matthias has been increasingly vocal in council meetings about succession planning, though I interpreted it as general concern rather than personal ambition."
"Who would be his candidate if not Dominic?" I asked. "Who stands to benefit if both Kieran and Dominic are removed from leadership contention?"
Kieran and Dominic exchanged a meaningful look. "There are several possibilities," Kieran said carefully. "But one stands out—Viktor Blackthorn from the Eastern Ridge pack. He's distantly related to our bloodline, has three children already proving his fertility, and has been cultivating close ties with Matthias for years."
"Matthias's daughter is mated to Viktor's brother," Dominic added. "Creating a family alliance that would benefit greatly from Viktor ascending to Alpha leadership here."
"So the motive is clear," I summarized. "Matthias wants to position Viktor for leadership after Kieran's grace period expires. Dominic is the primary obstacle as next in blood succession. I'm an obstacle as Kieran's mate who might still produce an heir. The rumors kill two birds with one stone."
"It's a compelling theory," Kieran agreed. "But still lacks concrete evidence. We need proof of Matthias's communications with Viktor or other pack councils about succession challenges."
"Which brings us back to the safe in his private study," I noted.
Kieran's expression turned thoughtful. "Entering an elder's private quarters without cause would be a serious breach of protocol. But..." he paused, considering. "There might be a legitimate way to gain access."
"How?" Dominic asked.
"The quarterly audit of council expenditures begins tomorrow," Kieran explained. "As Alpha King, I have the right to review all financial records, including those kept by individual council members. I could request Matthias provide his records for review—in his study, where the safe is allegedly located."
"And while you're reviewing records, what? Hope he steps out long enough for you to crack a safe?" I asked skeptically.
"Not exactly," Kieran said, a hint of a smile playing at his lips. "But council financial reviews traditionally involve the Alpha Queen as well. It's an ancient protocol, rarely observed in modern times, but still valid. It ensures the Alpha pair jointly oversees pack resources."
Hope sparked within me. "So I could accompany you legitimately."
"Precisely," he nodded. "Your presence would be formal, official, and completely above suspicion."
"And me?" Dominic asked. "What role do I play in this plan?"
Kieran considered his cousin carefully. "You'll need to maintain absolute normalcy. Continue your duties, avoid any appearance of collusion with either of us. If Matthias suspects we're investigating him, he'll be on guard."
It was a solid plan—elegant in its simplicity, using official protocols to gain legitimate access to the very location we needed to search. But a critical question remained.
"Assuming we gain access to Matthias's study," I said, "how do we find and open this safe without him noticing? He'll hardly leave us alone with his private documents."
"Leave that to me," Kieran replied confidently. "I have certain... advantages... as Alpha that may prove useful."
The cryptic response was typical Kieran, but I chose not to press for details. After the tension of the past days, this newfound collaboration felt too precious to risk with unnecessary arguments.
As the meal concluded, Maya discreetly removed the dishes, leaving us to continue our discussion over wine. The atmosphere had transformed remarkably from the confrontation that began the evening to something approaching our former partnership.
"I owe you both an apology," Kieran said unexpectedly, setting down his wine glass. "I allowed suspicion to cloud my judgment, isolating the very people I should have trusted most."
"You were manipulated," Dominic pointed out generously. "We all were."
"Perhaps," Kieran acknowledged. "But I should have seen through it. Instead, I fell into exactly the pattern Matthias anticipated—reacting with wounded pride rather than strategic thought."
"We all make mistakes," I said softly, meeting his gaze directly. "The important thing is recognizing them and changing course. Something I'm still learning to do myself."
Something shifted in Kieran's expression—a softening, a vulnerability rarely displayed. "Then perhaps we can learn together," he suggested, reaching hesitantly across the table toward my hand.
I met his gesture halfway, our fingers touching lightly in a tentative reconnection. It wasn't full reconciliation—too much remained unresolved between us—but it was a beginning, a willingness to move forward despite the hurts we'd both inflicted and endured.
Dominic cleared his throat discretely. "I should leave you two to discuss tomorrow's strategy privately," he said, rising from his chair.
"Stay," Kieran surprised us both by saying. "We need your insights on Matthias's likely reactions if confronted. And..." he hesitated, "I trust your discretion."
The acknowledgment clearly meant a great deal to Dominic, whose posture relaxed subtly as he resumed his seat.
For the next hour, we refined our plan for the financial audit, considering potential complications and contingencies. The safe, if it existed as Selene described, would be our primary objective—but we needed to be prepared for the possibility that Selene's information was false or deliberately misleading.
"We should have a secondary objective," I suggested. "Something that justifies our presence even if the safe doesn't exist or can't be accessed. A legitimate financial question that requires both our attention."
"The expenditures for the northern border reinforcements," Kieran nodded. "Matthias has been overseeing that project, and there have been some discrepancies in the reported costs. It's a perfect pretext."
As the plan took shape, I felt a growing sense of cautious optimism. For the first time since discovering Kieran's deception with the breeding program, we were functioning as true partners, combining our different perspectives to address a common threat.
When Dominic finally departed, escorted by Maya to ensure his movement through the fortress went unquestioned, Kieran remained seated across from me, his expression thoughtful.
"Will you stay?" I asked quietly, the question loaded with meaning beyond the immediate night's sleeping arrangements.
He met my gaze steadily. "If you want me to."
"I do," I admitted. "Not for... physical intimacy. I'm not ready for that yet. But I've missed your presence, despite everything."
Relief flickered across his features. "I've missed you too," he confessed. "More than I allowed myself to acknowledge."
This vulnerable honesty from Kieran—so different from his usual confident authority—touched something deep within me. Perhaps this crisis, painful as it was, might ultimately strengthen rather than destroy us.
"Tomorrow will be dangerous," he cautioned, changing the subject slightly. "If Matthias suspects our true purpose, he won't hesitate to retaliate."
"I know," I nodded. "But doing nothing is more dangerous in the long run. If he's truly orchestrating these rumors, he won't stop until he's achieved his goal."
"Which is precisely why we need to expose him quickly," Kieran agreed. "Before he can cause irreparable damage to the pack's unity."
As we prepared for bed that night, maintaining a respectful distance despite sharing the same space, I reflected on how dramatically circumstances had shifted in just twenty-four hours. From isolated prisoner to active partner in uncovering a potential conspiracy—it was a dizzying reversal.
But dangers remained. If Selene had misled me about the safe and its contents, whether deliberately or through error, tomorrow's audit would yield nothing of value. Worse, it might alert Matthias to our suspicions without providing evidence to act against him.
And if Selene wasn't the ally she presented herself as? If this entire scenario was another layer of manipulation designed to lure us into a trap?
As I drifted toward sleep, Kieran's familiar presence in the room both comforting and complicated, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were moving deeper into a web whose full dimensions we still couldn't see. Conspiracies within conspiracies, each player advancing their own agenda while appearing to serve others.
Tomorrow would bring us closer to the truth—or deeper into deception. Either way, the game had changed. For better or worse, the Alpha Queen was no longer a pawn but an active player in whatever dangerous match was unfolding within the pack.
And I intended to win.
