53: my plan
53: my plan
Lena.
"Explain," I demanded.
She sighed softly, as if deciding how much to reveal. "The Alpha King's fertility issues have been a closely guarded secret within the pack leadership. His inability to produce an heir with multiple compatible females over years of trying suggests a problem more serious than initially believed."
"I'm aware of his condition," I said impatiently.
"But are you aware of what happens if he fails to produce an heir within the traditional seven-year grace period after assuming leadership?" she countered. "A period that ends in less than a year."
I wasn't, and my expression must have revealed as much.
"The council can call for a challenge," Selene explained. "Open the Alpha position to qualified contenders, particularly those with proven fertility and strong bloodlines."
"Like Dominic," I realized, pieces falling into place. "Kieran's cousin, next in line by blood."
"Precisely," Selene nodded. "Now imagine how convenient it would be if Dominic could be eliminated as a threat before such challenges become possible."
"By implicating him in an affair with the Alpha's mate," I continued, following her logic. "A betrayal so severe Kieran might banish or even kill him, removing him from succession entirely."
"And if the Alpha Queen is discredited in the process?" Selene shrugged elegantly. "As I said, collateral damage."
My mind raced with this new perspective. "You're suggesting Elder Matthias might be behind this? That he's using these rumors to eliminate Dominic as a potential challenger so someone else can claim leadership when Kieran's grace period expires?"
"I suggest nothing," Selene demurred. "I merely offer an alternative interpretation of events that doesn't revolve around imagining myself as a jilted lover seeking petty revenge."
Her explanation was plausible—perhaps too plausible. Was she truly offering helpful insights, or crafting an elaborate misdirection to mask her own involvement?
"Why tell me this?" I asked suspiciously. "If you're being dismissed, why help me understand pack politics that no longer concern you?"
Something shifted in her expression—a softening, almost. "Because despite what you may think of me, Alpha Queen, I respect the mate bond. What exists between you and Kieran is rare and powerful, whatever his mistakes in handling it. I've never sought to destroy that bond—only to fulfill my duty to the pack by potentially providing an heir when it seemed you might not."
Her apparent sincerity left me momentarily speechless. Could I have misjudged her so completely?
"Furthermore," she continued into my silence, "if someone is manipulating events as I've suggested, the entire pack suffers. Power-hungry council members forcing succession challenges rarely ends well for anyone."
I considered her words carefully. "If what you're saying is true, I need evidence. Something Kieran can't dismiss as speculation or excuse as merely concern for my safety."
Selene hesitated, seeming to debate with herself. "I may be able to help with that," she finally said. "But it would require you to trust me—something I recognize is difficult given our circumstances."
"What kind of help?" I asked cautiously.
"Information," she replied. "Access to conversations I'm privy to that you are not. The women of the east wing hear things, Alpha Queen. Servants speak freely around us, viewing us as furniture rather than threats. Council members let down their guard in intimate moments."
The implication was clear—her position as Kieran's longtime lover had given her access to sensitive information that might prove valuable to me now.
"And why would you share such information?" I challenged. "What do you gain from helping me?"
"A more advantageous departure," she answered frankly. "In exchange for my assistance, I want a position within the pack structure—not just any role, but appointment as ambassador to the Southern Territory packs. It's a prestigious position that would allow me to use my diplomatic skills and maintain connections that might otherwise be lost when I leave here."
At least she was honest about her motivations. The request was substantial but not unreasonable if her information proved valuable.
"I can't promise what isn't mine to give," I said carefully. "But I can advocate strongly for such an appointment if your information helps resolve this situation favorably."
Selene considered this, then nodded once. "Fair enough. Then allow me to offer a first gesture of good faith. Check Elder Matthias's private study—behind the landscape painting on the west wall is a safe. Inside are records of his private communications with several council members from other packs. I believe you'll find discussions about succession challenges and potential alliances that would benefit from Dominic's removal."
"How would you know about a hidden safe in the Elder's private study?" I asked suspiciously.
A small smile played at Selene's lips. "Elder Matthias has... diverse appetites. Before Kieran selected me for his program, I had other patrons within the pack hierarchy."
The implication was clear, and explained how she might have gained access to such private information.
"And how would I access this safe? I'm essentially under house arrest, in case you hadn't noticed."
"That," Selene acknowledged, "is a challenge you'll need to solve yourself. I've provided the information; how you use it is your concern."
She rose gracefully, indicating our meeting was concluding. "I'll be in the fortress for three more days, Alpha Queen. If you wish to continue our conversation after you've verified my information, you know where to find me."
After she departed, I remained by the window, turning over everything she'd shared. Her theory about the rumors targeting Dominic rather than me primarily made tactical sense. It explained the specific nature of the accusations and their timing far better than simple revenge for her dismissal.
But trusting Selene felt dangerous—she was a woman who had shared my mate's bed for years, who had hoped to bear his child and secure a permanent position of influence. Her sudden helpfulness could easily be another layer of manipulation.
Maya approached cautiously. "Alpha Queen? Is there anything you need?"
"Actually, yes," I decided. "I need you to get a message to Dominic. Discreetly, without anyone—especially Kieran or Elder Matthias—knowing about it."
Her eyes widened. "But the Alpha King specifically forbade private communication between you and Lord Dominic."
"The message won't be private," I clarified. "You'll deliver it personally, verbally, in a public space where others might overhear. Nothing clandestine about it."
Maya still looked uncertain. "What message shall I deliver?"
"Tell him I request his presence at dinner tomorrow night, here in my chambers, with you present as chaperone throughout," I instructed. "Tell him it concerns pack security matters that cannot wait for the Alpha King's investigation to conclude."
"And if he asks for specifics?"
"Tell him it involves Elder Matthias's private safe and documents that may reveal the true purpose behind the rumors targeting us both."
Maya's expression shifted from uncertainty to alarm. "Alpha Queen, this sounds dangerously close to conducting your own investigation, which the Alpha King might view as defiance of his protective measures."
"I'm not defying anything," I countered smoothly. "I'm merely inviting a pack member to dine with me, with appropriate chaperonage, to discuss matters of pack security. The Alpha King restricted private meetings; this won't be private with you present."
"It's a fine line you're walking," Maya observed.
"The entire pack is walking a fine line right now," I replied grimly. "Between truth and manipulation, between stable leadership and potential chaos. I can't afford to sit idle while others decide my fate."
After Maya left to deliver my message, I moved restlessly around our chambers, frustration building at my confinement. My vision continued to improve incrementally throughout the day, which only heightened my awareness of my restricted circumstances. I could now make out distinct shapes and even some facial features at close range, yet remained unable to freely navigate my own home.
By evening, with no word from Kieran and no response yet from Dominic, I felt the walls closing in. I had been patient, had respected Kieran's need to process the shock of the rumors, had confined myself as instructed. But passivity would not solve this crisis. If Selene was right about the larger political machinations at work, waiting for Kieran to untangle the web of deception might prove disastrous for us all.
When Maya returned with my dinner tray, her expression told me she had news.
"Lord Dominic accepts your invitation for tomorrow evening," she reported quietly. "He suggested seven o'clock would allow him to attend without drawing undue attention, as the Alpha King will be occupied with the monthly border patrol review at that time."
So Dominic was willing to bend Kieran's restrictions as well. Interesting. Either he was foolishly risking his Alpha's wrath, or he too believed the danger we faced required extraordinary measures.
"Perfect," I nodded. "Please arrange a suitable meal for three. Nothing elaborate that might require additional serving staff—the fewer witnesses, the better."
"Yes, Alpha Queen." Maya hesitated before adding, "There's something else you should know. The Alpha King has requested separate sleeping quarters be prepared for him tonight. He sent word he won't be returning to your chambers until, quote, 'matters are resolved to his satisfaction.'"
The news shouldn't have hurt as much as it did. After all, we had been sleeping separately since I discovered his deception days ago. But this felt different—a public statement of distance rather than a private accommodation of my needs.
"I see," I said, fighting to keep my voice steady. "Thank you for telling me."
"He's angry and confused," Maya offered softly. "The rumors have affected him deeply, coming so soon after your discovery of the breeding program. His emotions are... complicated."
"So are mine," I replied, unable to keep the edge from my voice. "Yet I'm not the one treating him like a suspect rather than a partner."
Maya wisely remained silent, recognizing there was nothing she could say to ease this particular hurt.
After she left, I forced myself to eat despite my lack of appetite. Tomorrow's meeting with Dominic would require mental clarity and physical stamina. Selene's information about Elder Matthias's safe might be our best lead, but accessing it would require careful planning.
As night fell, I stood on the balcony, watching the fortress grounds below with my steadily improving vision. Lights flickered in windows, guards patrolled the perimeter, life continued despite the drama unfolding within these stone walls. Somewhere in the fortress, Kieran was sleeping apart from me, his mind poisoned by false suspicions. Somewhere else, perhaps Selene was plotting her next move, whether as ally or adversary.
And somewhere, someone was orchestrating a campaign to destroy not just my relationship with Kieran, but potentially the stability of the entire pack. Tomorrow, I would take my first real step toward exposing that someone, regardless of the risks.
Because one thing had become abundantly clear through all of this: in the world of werewolf politics, waiting for others to determine your fate was the most dangerous choice of all. It was time for the Alpha Queen to start acting like one, restrictions or no restrictions.
The wolves were at the door, and I refused to be their prey.
