Chapter 8 - A Warning

(Lauren’s Pov).

"What is it?" I asked later because I didn't want any secrets to be hidden from me. "Whatever it is, I want to know. I'm Luna here now, your Alpha's wife," I emphasized, looking at Adrian.

Adrian sighed and asked me and Ace to follow him. I grabbed my cardigan and walked out of the room with Ace as he held my hand.

As Adrian directed us out of the house, I realized that it wasn't the phone he was referring to, but someone was looking for him and I didn't recognize him at all.

He was an old man, similar to someone's parents with a mournful expression on his face. I, who was at Adrian's side and slightly behind him, tightened my grip on him.

When I saw the old man staring at my hand that Ace was holding, I began to suspect that the old man had something to do with Diane.

"I allowed you to be together even though I knew my daughter was with the enemy of my pack, but now you betray her by marrying a human and making her your mate?!" the old man said loudly and looked at me with anger.

"I think you'd be happy if your daughter got away from me, Alpha David," Ace said. “Didn’t that what you wish?”

And I began to realize that the man was Diane's father, who was also an Alpha. I guess I was still quite shocked by the whole wolf thing since I had only had wolf friends without really getting involved in their lives.

"How could you accept his proposal, Miss? You're just a human who means nothing to the wolf nation," David told me.

"Because he loves me," I answered boldly and lied. "I guess there's nothing wrong with two people loving each other and then deciding to be together."

David seemed to growl while Ace seemed to stiffen after I answered the old man's question.

Then David took a step closer and looked at us in turn. "Just so you know, Miss, my daughter is a vindictive person, just like me. But don't worry, I'm not vengeful, but my daughter won't be able to stop carrying out her vengeance until it's paid."

"Enough, Alpha David!" said Ace loudly. "Besides, I'm sure you didn't come just because of that."

"Of course, that's all I wanted to say. Even if we're enemies, I don't want any grudges from you either if my daughter carries out her grudge one day. I want my pack to be safe with nothing to do with this."

"I can't promise. Whoever hurts my wife will have everything to do with it," Ace's words sounded so promising. "Your daughter and I have completely broken up. You, being her father, should have told her and if possible even locked her up in a dungeon so she wouldn't interfere with anyone's life!"

I was a little scared when I heard this conversation that sounded increasingly heated and part of me felt regret for having to listen to this because my head was really dizzy listening to this argument.

"You're an asshole, Ace! You had all those years with her and just dumped her?!"

"You never gave your blessing and I chose my path."

"Wasn't it just to pretend at first?" asked David as he grinned and looked at me.

I sighed and swallowed. "I think … I should go back to our room," I said to Ace and walked away from them.

When I got back to my room, I washed my face to clear my mind and I always assumed that water could calm me down. I was in the bathroom for a while, then when I came out, Ace was already in the room and it seemed like the conversation didn't last long after I left.

"You mean a lot, Lauren. Don't listen to him," Ace said, telling me.

"Well, but he's right. I'm just an ordinary human. What do I have besides my human powers, Ace?”

Ace approached me and hugged me to calm me down. I didn't cry this time, but hearing David say that Ace betrayed his daughter, it was honestly Ace who betrayed me. And because of that, the pain seemed to linger.

“I will always choose you, Lauren.”

“I want to sleep,” I said and broke his embrace.

I climbed onto the bed and faced the window as I wrapped myself in a blanket. Meanwhile, I heard Ace join me, hugging me from behind making me sigh.

He didn't talk to me anymore because I chose not to continue this conversation. My resolve was to live for tomorrow and make sure that in the following days, I would be fine.

The next morning I woke up early. I got out of the room slowly because I didn't want to wake Ace up, and then I headed to the field, seeing a man who was training the warriors. When I approached him, he looked at me with a smile.

"Morning. What's wrong, Luna?" he asked.

"Morning, uhm, I'm sorry, who is your name?" I asked. "I really don't know much about anyone here."

"You bumped into me yesterday, Luna. Remember? I'm sure Ace already told you who I am."

My forehead crinkled and then I nodded because I finally knew his face. "Adam, the Gamma, right?"

He nodded and it turned out that this was the man who was Diane's best friend at first and then met Ace.

"What's up, Luna?" Again he asked the question I had yet to answer. "It's still too early for Ace to be awake but you're already up and look like you want to do something."

He seemed to know everything I was going to say or what I looked like.

I then scratched the back of my neck while smiling stiffly. "I don't know if I should ask this or not, but I want you to train me to fight."

Gamma then faced me and let the warriors train themselves. "You must be stressed out about Diane, Luna. I'm working on it. Besides, I can't just train you if Ace hasn't permitted me."

I sighed because it turned out that even though he was his best friend, he still had to ask Ace's permission. It felt like Ace would definitely not allow me to train with him either.

"Do you think Diane will listen to your words?" I asked, changing the subject as I folded my arms across my chest.

Adam smiled at me and he shrugged his shoulders. "I'm trying. She can still stand by my words not to come here and make a scene. I mean at least it works. So, is there anything you want to ask me again, Luna? Because it seems like you have a lot on your mind."

I smiled embarrassed and uncomfortable at him but there were indeed some things I wanted to ask.

"Do you mind?" I asked.

"While Ace isn't awake, you can ask all you want, Luna."

"Do you have feelings for Diane? Or maybe Diane? Because you had to step in to advise her while it is their relationship I mean no offense," I asked.

Adam then laughed and smiled, but then he shook his head. "Ah, I see why you ask that. But no, we never loved each other in the sense of wanting to be together, it was purely out of friendship. I wouldn't have what Ace has anyway. It’s kinda bad."

I nodded my head and understood his words. I guess I was satisfied enough to hear his answer.

"Is Diane that vindictive? Because I really want to have the power to defend myself, just in case I'm in danger, Adam. Because there's no way Ace is going to take care of me all the time, he's an Alpha and he's got other things going on that won't be with me twenty-four hours, right?"

"Take it easy, Luna. If Ace isn't around, there's Adrian, and if Adrian isn't around, there's me. There's always a backup to take care of you as Luna here, Alpha's mate and his wife," he said as he smiled at me.
