Chapter 44 044
Chapter 44 044
SOFIA
“Mr. Douglas, what can you do for me?”
“My mother-in-law is really after my life. How does she know I was the head of the department?” I voiced out.
A rather dumb question to ask but I still did either ways. After all, she is the mother of the CEO, what else can I expect than her getting herself involved in virtually all the affairs of the company?
Douglas sighed. From the look on his face, the situation already seem tiring to him.
“Are you going to make me go through this here?” I voiced out in pity.
“You know very well, all I wanted was to work in the Gold Company till I became bride. I really need you to help me,” I spoke out without holding back.
He bowed his head and a smile rented his cheeks. At first, I wondered what made him smile but I noticed he kept looking at the folder he held in his hands.
“Is there something you want to say, Mr. Douglas? Your silence worries me,” I said.
“You need to take things easy, Mrs. Gold. I don't think you realize how powerful you are,” he started.
“Powerful?”
What is this man talking about? I hope this isn't another scheme to make me faulter.
I have had enough share of that whilst growing and hustling without my parents alive to guide me through.
“You know I am just an outsider here…his mother thinks I'm a gold digger and I really don't blame her. I needed the money I was offered….” I muttered, not caring if Mr. Douglas heard all I said.
“You shouldn't talk like that. You aren't the low one here, ma. You are helping Mr. Gold secure his possessions. If he hadn't married you, he won't have the access to all of his father’s premium accounts…”
“I'm sure you know that already….” He added.
I nodded in response. “Why do you say I am powerful?”
He chuckled. “Mrs. Gold, you are legally married to the richest billionaire in the city as we speak. There is power and influence within your reach. You just need to use it….” He explained.
Even though I knew that right from time, hearing it from a third party made it sound more authentic.
I smiled halfway. “But I am scared….I can't do anything than submit to whatever will favour Steven,” I replied.
“Very true cause he is your husband but you can make decisions. If you choose to dismiss every staff, you can do that in just one sentence…”
“You shouldn't allow Mrs. Lauretta boss you around. She will only ruin your home for you….”
“......I'm sorry all of this is coming from me but please ma….Mr. Gold shouldn't know you and I had such a conversation. I still want to want to keep my job,” he uttered in a low tone.
“I understand. Of course, this is just between you and I.”
“So what are you suggesting, Mr. Douglas?” I asked.
For a moment, I watched as he kept looking at the folder in his hand.
“I was thinking you should talk to Mr. Steven. He could do something about your position…”
“I still don't get you, Mr. Douglas…what exactly are you saying?” I asked.
“You see, Mrs.Gold, just your name alone and what comes with it holds a lot of power, having a job won't do much of what you already have as the wife of Mr. Steven….”
“....but of course I am saying this because I feel you need to get rid of the embarrassment your mother-in-law brings. You never can tell what other trick she has up her sleeve…’
“Or haven't you been told?” He added with a smirk on his face.
Now this part actually got me. Of course, Lauretta Gold looked like the devil herself only I wasn't sure if the devil was a fan of eyeglasses.
“What is it about her, Mr. Douglas?” I asked out of curiosity.
He looked around like he was looking for something or perhaps if someone was lurking around to listen to our conversations.
“I can tell the guards to excuse us, if that is convenient,” I said in a soft tone.
He nodded in response stylishly.
After a short while, he adjusted his seating position, leaning forward, like he didn't want his voice projecting outside the room.
“You have to be careful around your mother-in-law..she isn't a good person,” he started.
“If there is any friend you are looking for and someone you can rely on, that person would be me, Mrs Gold,” he added.
“But why is she like that? Doesn't she want her son to get married?” I asked further.
If I was going to dine with the devil, at least let me know the kind of meal I would be served.
“I wouldn't know, Mrs Gold, but one thing I know is, she has her eyes and nose everywhere. She once made me almost lose my job. I had no idea she knew everything going on in the company…this is why you need to be careful and just pull out now,” he said.
I understood the warnings around my mother-in-law undoubtedly but why should I decline a job that was freely fired to me by Steven because of her?
That part was unclear. “Why exactly would I be doing that? Out of fear or for peace to reign?” I pondered.
“So you think if I refuse to be a staff at the Gold Company, she would leave me alone?” I asked.
“Absolutely and if you think you can't do that, I can still help you out,” he answered.
“Okay??” I interrupted.
“I know you don't know anything about leading or the scope of what was placed in your hands. Why not let me handle it for you but that would be between us? I can always do your job and I would give you reports…” he said in a brute tone.
Hmm….so if I am not mistaken, Mr. Douglas wants my job all to himself?
My mind skipped and I paused.
“This is huge, Mr. Douglas….I can't thank you enough. You seem to be interested in making everything work out smoothly for me but I still don't understand something….” I explained.
“Please ask. I'm ready to answer all of your questions, Sofia..” he said, calling me by my name.
“What do you want in return for this?” I asked bluntly.
