Epilogue--Zoe 1
Epilogue--Zoe 1
Zoe's POV
I'd been at the training camp for nearly six months when Aria arrived. As one of the few female warriors-in-training, I'd earned my place through sheer determination rather than natural talent. The pack had welcomed me despite my years living in the human world, but finding true friendship had been challenging—until Aria showed up with her quiet strength and no-nonsense attitude.
From my position across the training field, I watched as Alpha Ethan himself escorted her through the camp, something unusually protective in his posture. But it was the man beside them who kept drawing my attention—David, our ever-serious Beta, his dark eyes watchful as he assessed the newcomer.
"Everyone," Ethan called out, his voice immediately silencing the training sessions around us. "This is Aria. She'll be joining us as a combat instructor and trainer."
Whispers immediately broke out. Newcomers weren't unusual, but ones personally introduced by the Alpha were rare. I studied her curiously—there was something about her that spoke of hidden strength, despite her slender frame.
"Zoe," David's voice cut through my thoughts as he beckoned me over. I jogged to join them, trying to ignore the little flutter in my chest when his stern gaze met mine. I'd always found our Beta intimidatingly attractive, but he was so serious, so focused on duty that he barely seemed to notice anyone beyond their training performance.
"Yes, sir?" I asked, straightening my posture instinctively.
"Show Aria around the facilities. She'll be working with the intermediate combat group starting tomorrow." His instructions were curt as always, his expression giving nothing away.
"Of course," I nodded, turning to Aria with a warm smile. "Welcome to Shadow Fang training camp. I'm Zoe."
Aria's amber-flecked eyes studied me briefly before she returned my smile with a smaller one of her own. "Thanks. Nice to meet you."
As I led her away, I couldn't help glancing back over my shoulder. To my surprise, David was still watching us, his expression unreadable. When our eyes met, he quickly looked away, returning to his clipboard with renewed focus.
---
Over the next few weeks, Aria and I fell into an easy friendship. She was quieter than me, more reserved, but there was something about her that made me trust her immediately. We trained together often, her combat skills far surpassing mine despite my head start at the camp.
"You're telegraphing your moves," she told me one afternoon after flipping me onto my back for the fifth time. "You need to mask your intentions better."
I groaned, accepting her outstretched hand to pull myself up. "Easy for you to say. You move like water."
"It takes practice," she replied, demonstrating a more subtle approach to the same attack. "Try again."
We were so focused on our sparring that I didn't notice David's approach until his deep voice cut through our concentration.
"Good form, Aria," he commented, clipboard in hand as always. His eyes shifted to me, more intense than usual. "Zoe, you're still dropping your left guard."
"I know," I sighed, brushing dirt from my training clothes. "I'm working on it."
To my surprise, David set his clipboard down. "Show me your stance."
I blinked, momentarily frozen. David rarely offered direct instruction, usually delegating to other trainers. Aria shot me a subtle, encouraging nod.
I moved into my fighting stance, acutely aware of David's eyes on me. He circled slowly, assessing from all angles. Then, unexpectedly, he stepped closer.
"May I?" he asked, hands hovering near my shoulders.
I nodded, not trusting my voice. His touch was firm but gentle as he adjusted my posture, his hands warm through the thin fabric of my shirt. When he moved to position my arms, I caught a hint of his scent—pine and something uniquely his that made my wolf stir beneath my skin.
"Like this," he murmured, his breath tickling my ear as he stood behind me, guiding my movements. "Feel the balance shift. Power comes from your core, not just your arms."
His proximity was intoxicating. I struggled to focus on his instructions rather than the solid warmth of him against my back.
"Try now," he said, stepping away too soon.
I executed the move, finding to my surprise that it felt more natural, more fluid.
"Better," he nodded, the faintest hint of approval warming his usually stoic expression. "Practice that sequence until it becomes instinct."
---
The change was subtle at first. David began appearing during my training sessions more frequently, offering corrections and occasionally demonstrating techniques. Each interaction left me more confused than the last—his touch lingering just a moment too long, his eyes meeting mine with something that seemed almost like interest before his professional mask slipped back into place.
"You're imagining things," I told myself firmly as I showered after a particularly grueling session. "He's like this with all the trainees."
But deep down, I knew that wasn't true. I'd seen how he interacted with others—efficiently, impersonally. With me, there was something different, something I couldn't quite name.
The pack's celebration of the spring equinox came at a time of high tension. The rogues had been increasingly active at the borders, and everyone needed a night to release the building stress. I'd spent more time than I cared to admit selecting my outfit—a simple blue dress that complemented my eyes, my usually practical ponytail replaced by loose waves cascading down my back.
Aria whistled when she saw me emerging from my quarters. "Look at you! Someone's planning to make an impression tonight."
I rolled my eyes, though I couldn't hide my smile. "It's a celebration. We're supposed to dress up."
The celebration was already in full swing when we arrived, the clearing decorated with strings of lights that cast a magical glow over the festivities. Tables laden with food lined one side, while pack members danced to music that called to our wild natures.
My eyes found David immediately. He stood apart from the dancers, vigilant as always in his role as Beta, but the formal black clothing he wore in place of his usual training gear made my breath catch. He was devastatingly handsome, the firelight casting his strong features in sharp relief.
Taking a deep breath, I made my way toward him, weaving through dancing couples and laughing pack members.
He saw me coming, his posture straightening almost imperceptibly as I approached. For a moment, I thought I glimpsed something like appreciation in his dark eyes as they took in my appearance.
"You're supposed to be celebrating, Beta," I teased as I reached him, somehow finding confidence I didn't know I possessed. "Not standing guard duty."
"Someone needs to stay alert," he replied, though his eyes softened slightly. "You look..." He paused, seeming to search for an appropriate word. "Different. Nice," he amended quickly.
I laughed, the sound carrying in the night air. "I'll take that as a compliment."
A faint smile touched his lips. "It was intended as one."
The music changed then, shifting to something slower, more primal that called to our wolf sides. Without overthinking it, I held out my hand.
"Dance with me?"
Surprise flashed across his face, followed by hesitation. "I don't usually..."
"One dance," I insisted. "Then you can go back to being the responsible Beta who never has fun."
Something flickered in his eyes—a challenge accepted, perhaps—and to my delight, he took my hand. "One dance."
But one dance became two, then three. David moved with unexpected grace for such a large man, his hands respectful but firm on my waist. As the night progressed, we drifted closer to each other, the space between us shrinking with each song until I could feel the warmth radiating from his body.
"I didn't know you could dance," I admitted, looking up at him through my lashes.
"There are many things you don't know about me," he replied, his voice lower than usual in a way that sent shivers down my spine.
Later, I couldn't say who suggested taking a walk away from the crowded celebration, but suddenly we were alone beneath the stars, the music fading behind us. The air between us felt charged, heavy with unspoken possibilities.
"You've improved significantly in your training," he said, breaking the comfortable silence that had fallen between us. "Aria says you're one of her most dedicated students."
"High praise, coming from her," I smiled, touched that they'd discussed me. "Though I still have a long way to go to reach her level."
"We all have our own strengths," he replied, his usual seriousness softened by something almost philosophical. "You have an adaptability that many born wolves lack. It's... impressive."
Moonlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows across his face as he turned to look at me. The expression in his eyes made my heart race—something raw and unguarded that I'd never seen before.
"Why did you ask me to dance tonight?" he asked suddenly.
The direct question caught me off guard. "I... because I wanted to," I answered honestly. "Because you looked like you needed a reminder that there's more to life than duty."
He stopped walking, turning to face me fully. "And what if duty is all I've known? All I've allowed myself to know?"
The vulnerability in his question made my chest ache. I stepped closer, emboldened by the night and the lingering effects of pack wine.
"Then maybe it's time you allowed yourself more."
For a heartbeat, neither of us moved. Then, with a soft sound almost like surrender, David closed the distance between us. His lips found mine with unexpected gentleness, his large hands cradling my face as though I were something precious. The kiss was tentative at first, a question rather than a demand, but when I pressed closer, winding my arms around his neck, something broke loose within him.
The kiss deepened, his restraint crumbling as he backed me against a nearby tree, his body pressing against mine with delicious heat. My fingers tangled in his hair, something between a sigh and a moan escaping me as his lips traveled down my neck.
"We should stop," he murmured against my skin, even as his hands tightened on my waist.
"Why?" I challenged breathlessly.
He pulled back slightly, his eyes searching mine. "Because if we don't stop now..."
"Then don't stop," I whispered, pulling him back to me.
What began as a kiss against a tree soon became something more urgent, more necessary. When he pulled back to ask a silent question, I nodded without hesitation.
"My quarters are closer," he said, his voice rough with desire.
