Chapter 730 Feeling Uncomfortable
Chapter 730 Feeling Uncomfortable
If it weren't for Royce grabbing my wrist every time, I might have already taken action.
"Get out now, or I'm calling the cops," Lyanna snapped, glaring at the two men in front of her. "Sean, you don't want the whole town knowing what you guys have been up to, right?"
Their pride was their Achilles' heel. Even drowning in debt, they wouldn't dare let anyone know.
Stanley and Sean glared at Lyanna, their eyes burning with anger.
"You're really pushing me here. How did I end up with a kid like you?"
"Just wait. You'll get what's coming to you."
Stanley turned and stormed out after that.
Sean muttered a few curses at Lyanna before quickly following Stanley.
Once they were gone, Lyanna finally let out a breath, collapsing to the ground as tears streamed down her face again.
Joanna and I rushed over to help Lyanna up, our hearts aching for her.
Having a father like that was truly Lyanna's misfortune.
"You did great just now. That's exactly how you handle it," I told her.
Lyanna gave me a small, forced smile, her face still clouded with sadness.
She wiped her tears, took a deep breath, and looked at Joanna and me with determination.
"I can't let you guys down. You've helped me so much, I need to show my gratitude."
Lyanna was perceptive, even though she was timid and valued her relationships deeply.
"Your dad probably won't bother you for a while, and the debt collectors have been warned off. They won't come asking for money anymore."
I looked at Lyanna seriously. "Do you have any plans now?"
Lyanna lowered her head and fiddled with her clothes. "I'm planning to find another job. I can't keep staying at Joanna's place forever."
"What if your dad comes back to bother you again?" I had a feeling Stanley wouldn't give up so easily.
Once someone with weak morals gets a taste of exploitation, it's hard for them to stop.
Lyanna bit her lip. "I'll cancel my phone number and make sure they can't find me."
Was this Lyanna's solution after thinking it over for so long? I wasn't sure whether to commend or criticize her.
To me, it felt like she was still running away.
But maybe for Lyanna, it was the best solution.
"What about your boyfriend? Are you going to stop contacting him too?"
Lyanna paused at my question, then gave a bitter smile.
"His mom found out about my dad's debts and refused to let us be together. We've broken up."
No wonder Lyanna was living alone under a bridge. She really was all by herself.
"Then look ahead and cut ties with the past completely."
"This will be your chance to transform and start anew."
I wasn't just giving empty encouragement; I truly believed she had the potential.
Lyanna nodded firmly. "I will. Thank you, Caroline."
"Great, that's settled then." I couldn't help but smile. At least we managed to help her out.
Joanna patted Lyanna's shoulder. "For now, just stay with me. Once you find a job and save up some money, you can think about moving out."
Lyanna glanced at Joanna, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Isn't it too much trouble for you?"
"Not at all. Honestly, I'm hoping you'll get strong enough to come work for me someday." Joanna saw Lyanna's potential too.
Just then, the bodyguard came over with some news. Apparently, Lyanna's father and brother had been badmouthing her as they left, and now almost everyone in the neighborhood knew that Lyanna had supposedly abandoned them for money.
"They're shameless. Who does something so despicable?" Joanna was furious, wanting to track them down and give them a piece of her mind.
But the bodyguard awkwardly mentioned that they had already taken off in a car.
"It's okay. I don't think people will care much," Lyanna said quietly. "Everyone's so busy. Who has the time to worry about others' business? Especially when it's all hearsay without evidence."
I couldn't help but look at Lyanna, impressed by her clear understanding.
"As long as you can stay unaffected, that's what matters. Your mindset is important," I said, patting Lyanna's shoulder.
Lyanna nodded firmly, then checked the time. "Would you like to try my cooking? I don't have much to repay you with, but I can make dinner."
Joanna, Royce, and I exchanged glances, and we all agreed.
However, Joanna's apartment was short on ingredients, so we needed to go to the supermarket.
"Just tell us what you need, and we'll go buy it," I said, holding Royce's hand.
Lyanna thought for a moment, then wrote a list on a sticky note.
"This should be it. We also need some spices. Joanna's kitchen isn't fully stocked."
I took the note and nodded. "Leave it to us. You two wait here."
Royce and I headed to a nearby supermarket, which had a wide variety of items.
I grabbed a cart and started picking out things according to Lyanna's list.
"I wonder how good Lyanna's cooking is. Should be decent, right?"
I chatted with Royce while picking out items.
Royce responded absentmindedly, clearly preoccupied.
"What's wrong?" I turned to look at Royce.
Royce frowned. "I thought I saw someone familiar, but they shouldn't be here."
"Who?" I looked around curiously.
Royce rubbed his temples. "Maybe I was mistaken. Are we done shopping?"
I looked at Royce, sensing something was off.
But since Royce didn't want to talk, I didn't press further.
"Yeah, we're done. Let's head back."
I felt a bit uneasy, though I couldn't pinpoint why.
Back at the apartment, Royce made a phone call, standing on the balcony and talking to someone.
I wasn't suspicious of Royce, just felt uncomfortable without knowing why.
