Chapter 230
Salome’s sore spot was hit right on the mark by a complete stranger online.
All the effort she’d poured into crafting her image–gone, destroyed in just a few cutting remarks.
Shaking with anger, Salome could barely get her words out. “I can’t believe this person! They’re saying the only reason I’m allowed to stay at this center is because I’m pregnant. That’s complete slander! I’m calling a lawyer!*
Heather, ever patient, tried to soothe her. “Don’t waste your breath on people like that. Who knows, maybe it’s that witch Edith stirring things up, jealous that you’re finally happy. She probably started all this online just to drag you down. Once your baby’s born, we’ll settle the score with her properly.”
At the mention of Edith, Salome lost what little composure she had left.
Her eyes turned red, and she ground her teeth, swearing to herself that if she didn’t get revenge on Edith, she’d change her last name.
Still sobbing, Salome called Beckett.
“Honey, Edith is doing this on purpose! She’s out there slandering me online, saying I only got into this expensive maternity center because of the baby. I want to get a lawyer!”
Salome was crying so hard Beckett could hardly understand her. Urged on by Heather, he had no
choice but to come over.
When he arrived at the elegant suite, Salome was curled up on the bed. The moment she heard the door, her sobs grew louder, and her tears and snot flowed freely.
Beckett walked in to the sound of her wailing. Annoyance flickered across his face.
He used to think Salome’s teary–eyed act was endearing–charming, even. But ever since her belly had grown, she’d become heavy and clumsy, and her constant crying was just irritating.
Wiping her tears, Salome kept sneaking glances at Beckett, trying to read his reaction.
But Beckett had already composed himself, masking his true feelings as he sat down by the bed, putting on a gentle front. “What’s gotten you so upset this time?”
Still sniffling, Salome handed him her phone. “Look at this yourself, honey. Edith’s like a rat in the gutter–she just can’t leave me alone! Now she’s riling people up online to attack me!”
Beckett glanced at her phone, and–unexpectedly–a faint smile played at his lips.
Edith, always pretending she didn’t care about him or the Vance family, secretly keeping tabs on their every move… He guessed she was just itching for a way back into the Vance family, after all.
“Let’s forget about what she did before, I won’t hold it against her. But at a time like this, what’s she really up to?”
As Salome spoke, she realized Beckett wasn’t even listening. He seemed lost in thought, some secret plan brewing behind that half–hidden smile.
She pouted, “Honey, are you even listening? What could possibly be more important than me and our

baby?”
Salome reached out, gently placing his hand on her rounded belly, hoping to awaken some paternal instinct in him.
Beckett snapped out of it. His hand rested on her stomach as he smiled. “She can’t stand the thought of losing the Vance name, or the title of Mrs. Vance. With nowhere else to vent her emotions, of course she’s taking it out on you. Don’t let it get to you. Didn’t you say you wanted that designer bag from Hermès? I’ll have someone pick it up for you–don’t let this mess upset you or the baby. It’s just not worth it.”
Salome’s lips curled up in a smile she couldn’t hide.
She hooked her arm through Beckett’s and cooed, “Don’t send someone else to buy it. Why don’t you come with me tomorrow? Wouldn’t it be so much more fun if we went shopping together?”
Beckett eyed her protruding belly. “It’s not safe for you to be out and about with your stomach so big. It’s easier if I just have someone bring it to you.”
