Chapter 154
Edith burst out laughing, clutching her stomach. “I swear I’m not! Just wait, I’ll be over
soon!”
Watching Edith’s radiant smile, Justin was momentarily seized by a wild idea.
Why stop at buying her a cheese roll? Why not just buy Forest’s Bakery outright?
After Jeffry’s accident, Heather, no matter how she felt about the Vale family, had no choice but to put on a show of goodwill for the sake of family ties.
Salome went with her, and Beckett joined them as well.
Beckett had his reasons: Pioneer Prime hadn’t landed any new Hawksley Group contracts lately, so he was looking at a slow season ahead–and besides, it couldn’t hurt to score some points in front of Salome.
After all, Salome was his brother–in–law’s wife. Some things, like showing concern for
family, were just expected.
Salome, her baby bump showing beneath her designer dress and oversized sunglasses, looked every bit the picture of a wealthy heiress. Even a simple trip to the hospital with Heather and Beckett meant bringing along two bodyguards.
She claimed it was just in case anything unexpected happened–best to have someone on hand to handle it.
Seeing the Vances arrive, both Adah and Jeffry brightened. Clearly, Salome had captured the hearts of both her husband and mother–in–law.
After all, if her in–laws made such a show of caring for her family, it could only mean Salome herself was deeply valued.
Adah greeted them with eager warmth. “Oh, my dear, you didn’t have to come all this way! It’s really nothing, not worth troubling you.”
Ever since the Vale family’s fortunes had declined, they’d been propped up by the Vances‘ generosity, clinging to the last remnants of their extravagant lifestyle. For the Vales, the Vance family was someone to impress, someone to please.
Heather’s smile was all surface, her hand wrapped a little tighter around her designer purse as she sat beside Jeffry, offering a few perfunctory words of sympathy. “This is hardly a small matter. I should be apologizing, really. Work’s been so hectic, I barely found the time to come–please don’t hold it against me.”
Salome chimed in sweetly, “Mom, we’re all family. There’s no need to apologize.

You’re being too formal.”
Heather gave a half–hearted laugh, then pulled out an envelope thick with cash from her bag and placed it on the bedside table. “Just a little something–please accept it.”
Jeffry eyed the wad of cash, his grin nearly splitting his face as he gushed, “You’re far too generous. Really, I’m touched by how much you care about the Vale family.“
