Chapter 45: Maybe
Chapter 45: Maybe
Calina
They placed Mason in one of their rooms and I helped clothe him. He woke soon after they’d left, a soft smirk on his face when he saw my face.
“If this is the face I wake up to, then maybe giving up my humanity was worth it,” he said in a weak, soft voice.
I chuckled sarcastically and shook my head.
“I’m hungry,” he said, trying to sit up but failing miserably.
I stood up and told him that I’d call a nurse, but he shook his head and tapped the red button next to him. He asked for me to stay with him. I obliged and sat next to him.
“I’m sorry…” I said, after a moment or so of silence, “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
“You have nothing to apologise for. I think of this as karma. I’m paying for everything bad I’ve done. Besides… everything in the LHS is meaningless to me ever since you’ve left.”
When he said that, it brought back good memories. We’d always compete against each other, even after dating. We were great hunters and so we always strived to be the best. Even after we dated, we would always compete. In fact, it was one of the reasons I thought he—
Just then one of the nurses appeared. Mason smiled and asked for something to eat. She smiled back, clearly taken by his charm, and then disappeared. Before she did, however, she offered me something to eat as well and unfortunately addressed me as Luna. Mason picked it up immediately.
“So… you and Vander huh? Is it a done deal thing?” he asked.
I shook my head, so violently that I almost had a headache.
“No… not even close. He and I are mates… whatever that means. It ends there. I hate him and I don’t think there will ever be anything between us. As far as I’m concerned, we’re as good as strangers.”
Mason listened intently but said nothing. I still remembered his recent love confession and hoped it had nothing to do with his question. I didn’t want him getting any ideas. Especially when things were so confident.
“So, do you know what kind of fur I got?” he asked.
I shrugged and said, “Not sure. Vander might have a better idea; he was the one who sat with you all night.”
Mason seemed taken aback by that information and he scoffed, saying, “You can’t be serious…”
I nodded in confirmation.
The nurse returned with the food for Mason and a sandwich for me. Mason ate ravenously. Perhaps that was why my appetite was so insatiable as well. The change.
The both of us ate in silence, enjoying each other’s company. It felt nice and familiar, like I had a friend again. I didn’t feel so lonely.
After Mason had finished, we got to talking a little more. He told me about what had happened in the few days that I’d left and what he’d found out about Vander and Brutis. I was not surprised, to say the least. Although werewolves and hunters tried to peacefully co-exist, we did have incidents. I was surprised that he got away with only a bounty. His father must have still had strong ties with the LHS then. And then there was Brutis and Caleb. It was unlikely that we’d be able to prove anything. Caleb would be seen as simply protecting his territory. My stepfather and the rest of us would be in the wrong. Even if Mason didn’t turn into a wolf, I was sure that he’d be exiled and his family wouldn’t care one bit what happened to him after that.
Soon our conversation led to Jenna, and I asked him about the break up. He hesitated a moment before wiping at the corners of his mouth and saying, “I did date her out of spite… And I dated her to get further than you ever could in the LHS. But when you left… I felt empty. And I realised that Jenna repulsed me. So, I broke it off.”
So, both the men in my life were petty idiots. I couldn’t tell who was worse between the both of them. At least they were honest. But I was nowhere near ready to forgive either of them. The bar for me, wasn’t in hell.
I sighed and leaned back into my seat before asking, “So, what do we do now? The LHS was our future and now… we have nothing. No money, no job… no LHS.”
Mason sighed too and then shrugged, “We could get jobs? I mean my cousin owns that restaurant that we had that mission at. Maybe we could start off small there?”
“Maybe…”
