Milton's Plea

Milton's Plea
Giselda

I smiled softly at Gerry, Logan, and Milton as they walked into the living room from their scouting.

“How did it go? Did you find her?” I asked them hopefully.

My mate came over to me, shaking his head as the muscle in his jaw ticked furiously. “No! Can you remind me again why we can’t just go fuck Orion up and make him tell what he did to her?”

I groaned. “Because it’s against the law. If we were to attack him without a very good reason, it would be us on the chopping block, and I’m sure that if we were, and Annie showed up, I’m not sure we would get her back. Our best option is to capture Sonia and bring her back here, where she will be safe, until we can take her before the council and prove that he did something to her.”

Milton sat down on the edge of the couch with his hands clasped between his thighs. “Giselda?”

“Yes, Milton?”

“I need you to do me a favor,” he told me sadly, as he lifted tear-filled eyes to mine.

“I’m not killing you,” I hissed. “So, stop asking me!”

He sighed as he rubbed his temples. “I wasn’t going to ask you to kill me.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Then what is it you want?”

“I want you to make my memories bearable,” he whispered. “I want them dulled so I can focus.” His body tensed even more. “I can’t breathe without her, Giselda. Please. I’ve always been there for you. I’ve always been the best gamma, the best friend, and your biggest support. Please, I’m begging you. Do this for me.”

I sighed softly as I looked down at my daughter, who had fallen asleep, suckling on my breast. I tried to blink back my tears, but one still managed to fall onto her cheek. I stroked my finger across her tiny furry cheek as emotions filled me. I nodded.

“I’ll do that for you. No one should have their mate taken from them. We all know why Orion did that to you! He’s trying to make Annie go feral. You just got caught in the crossfire.” I gently removed my cub from my nipple before gently passing her off to Gerry, who immediately took my seat and took his shirt off to place our little cub on his chest. I bent down to kiss him. “Thank you, Gerry.”

I rolled my shoulders back as I moved over to sit next to Milton and took his hand. “Which memories do you want me to dull?”

He swallowed hard. “All of them, but if you can’t do that, then there are three I really need dulled.”

“I’ll see what I can do. I might not be able to dull them all at once, but we can do this a few times. I might just need a rest between the sessions,” I told him.

“Thank you.”

I shifted toward him so that I could look into his eyes, searching for how close he was to insanity. It wasn’t just Annie that I was worried about going feral. What Orion had done to Sonia was worse than knowing who your mate was, but couldn’t have them. Orion had taken Sonia from Milton before he even had the chance to have her. I sighed when the eyes looking back at me were unfocused and hazy. That wasn’t good at all. He was closer to being feral than he was to not being feral.

“Let’s get started. Close your eyes and let me in.”

His eyes fluttered closed, and our link opened wide, encouraging me to slip through. As Angel crept into his mind, I could feel his pain. It washed over both of us as if it were our own. His agony was worse than what we had found in Logan’s mind. Milton’s soul had been fragmented. It wasn’t just his mind. It was every part of him. Angel crept deeper into his mind, trying to find any light in the depths of his mind. We just needed a single memory to start with. A beacon in the dreary, all-consuming darkness that had invaded every corner of his mind.

Angel continued to slink through paths, fighting the depression that the eerie silence instantly started to infect us with. When Angel started to slow down, struggling to keep moving with the weight pressing down on her, Gerry opened our link, pushing light and happiness into me. Angel took a deep breath before letting Gerry’s strength and love ooze through the link with Milton as Angel tried to push herself up off the floor.

‘Come on, girl,’ I whispered to her. ‘You can do this. Get up! Milton needs us! We can’t let him down.’

She tossed her head back, panting as she tried to get to her feet. We tried to cling to Gerry, tried to use our love for him to push the darkness out, but it was of no use. Milton’s anguish was quickly overpowering everything else. Angel slumped to the side, curling into a tight ball as Milton’s pain took us over, not leaving any room for light. As Angel’s eyes closed, all I could think was: I knew better than to come into a feral bear’s mind. This was my fault.

I was pacing outside the sleuth house, waiting for even the slightest sign that Havana’s plane was almost back. I needed to make sure that Logan was okay. The council had taken him, and the sleuth hadn’t heard anything about what was going on. It was weighing heavily on all of us. We needed him to be okay. It wasn’t just for us, but for Annie. She hadn’t even had a chance to really get to know him, and if anyone deserved to have Logan in their life, it was her.

The moment I heard the rumble of the plane engines, I raced out of the yard, sprinting as quickly as I could to the airstrip. I was beyond ready to have our alpha and beta team home. I may be gamma, and I knew how to hold the sleuth down, but I was at my best when taking orders from those above me. I didn’t enjoy being the one in charge. I skidded to a stop just inside the treeline just as the plane was rolling to a stop.

While I waited for the doors to open, I cursed under my breath. This was taking too long. The door should be open already. They should be walking down the stairs. I should already be kneeling in front of my alpha, but the plane was still locked down as if something were wrong. I stepped out of the treeline as I tried to open one of their links again, but they all kept them closed, which only served to make me more worried.

When the doors finally opened ten minutes later, I immediately started to walk over to it, only to draw up short as Giselda led a terrified Sonia off the plane. My heart started to race inside my chest, and my breath caught in my throat. Sonia. Suddenly, Sonia’s head shot up, and she met my gaze. Everything froze around me as the world stopped spinning for a long moment before she pulled away from Giselda to rush down the stairs to throw herself into my arms. She buried her face in my chest, sobbing loudly as her fingers fisted in my shirt. I wrapped my arms around her, cradling her against my chest, as everything finally fell into place. I closed my eyes, burying my face in her neck before kissing her cheek.

“Sonia,” I whispered, my voice full of emotion.

She tilted her head back to look up at me, tears pouring down her face. “Milton, reject me. You have to reject me. I’m begging you…”
