Chapter 86 Fragment Hunt (Sam POV)
Chapter 86 Fragment Hunt (Sam POV)
Asmodai is supposed to be dissolved, but three hours after sealing the barriers I'm detecting lingering fragments of his consciousness scattered across Seattle like landmines waiting to detonate.
"Echo, confirm." I'm exhausted beyond measure, wings dragging, corruption still locked at ninety point two percent despite the ritual's completion. "You're saying Asmodai didn't fully dissolve? That pieces of him survived the barrier sealing?"
"Seven fragments." Echo's spiritual form flickers with newly-gained stability from Tyler's presence. "Sam, when you sealed the barriers, Asmodai's main consciousness dissolved. But he had backup contingencies. Seven fragment vessels he prepared over the past month. Humans he corrupted deeply enough that his consciousness could hide within their corruption even after his primary form was destroyed."
"So we're hunting seven people carrying demon lord fragments." Kieran appears beside me, looking as exhausted as I feel. "Echo, do we know who the vessels are?"
"Three confirmed." Marcus manifests alongside Echo. "One is a homeless addict downtown, Asmodai's been feeding him corruption for weeks, using him as emergency anchor. Second is a corporate executive at Fernandez Technologies, she made a deal five years ago and never realized how deep the compromise went. Third is..." He hesitates. "Third is one of Lord Ash's fae warriors. Someone who got infected during the pocket dimension extraction."
"A fae vessel?" I stare at him. "Marcus, fae can't be possessed. Their nature resists demonic influence."
"This one was already corrupted by iron poisoning." Marcus pulls up spiritual intelligence I can somehow perceive despite it existing across dimensions. "The warrior got wounded by human weapons during a gang confrontation three months ago. Iron entered his bloodstream. Started degrading his fae nature from the inside. Asmodai exploited that degradation to plant a fragment."
"Then we purge all seven." I spread my wings despite exhaustion. "Kieran, coordinate with Lord Ash. I'll handle the human vessels. Echo, Marcus, track the remaining four unknowns while we deal with the confirmed three."
"Sam, you can barely stand." Kieran touches my shoulder, and through the soul-bond I feel his concern overlaying my determination. "You've been channeling Nephilim power for six hours straight. You need to rest before..."
"I'll rest when Asmodai's fragments are purged." My voice comes out harder than intended. "Kieran, every minute those fragments exist, they're gathering strength. Preparing to reconstitute. We can't give Asmodai time to rebuild. We end this now."
"Together, then." Kieran doesn't argue further. Just accepts my choice and adapts to it. "Sam, we purge the fragments as a team. You fly, I coordinate ground support, Echo and Marcus track targets. Nobody operates alone. Deal?"
"Deal."
We move through Seattle in the pre-dawn darkness. The city is wounded, buildings damaged from the angel-demon war, civilians traumatized from witnessing cosmic combat, infrastructure strained from the power grid corruption.
But the city is also healing. Supernatural and human communities working together for the first time, coordinating reconstruction with the kind of cooperation that usually only emerges after shared catastrophe.
"First vessel is two blocks ahead." Echo guides me through spiritual channels. "Sam, the homeless addict. His name is Michael. Forty-three years old. Been on the streets for eight years after his family died in a car accident. Asmodai approached him two months ago, offered power to dull the grief. Michael accepted. The fragment has been growing in his corruption ever since."
I land in the alley where Michael is sleeping. He looks exactly as Echo described, middle-aged, worn down by grief and addiction, barely clinging to existence.
"Michael." I kneel beside him. "I'm Sam Drewsbury. I need to remove something from your consciousness. Something that's been manipulating you for months. This is going to hurt."
Michael's eyes open. They're red, not fully demonic but getting there. "You're the bridge-walker. The corrupted Nephilim who sealed the barriers. Asmodai's been whispering about you. Said you'd come for his fragments eventually."
"Then he knew this was coming." I touch Michael's forehead, channeling power carefully. "Michael, the fragment Asmodai planted in your corruption, do you consent to its removal? Or do you want to keep carrying a piece of demon lord consciousness that will eventually consume what's left of your humanity?"
"Remove it." Michael's voice cracks. "Please. I've been hearing his voice for weeks. Couldn't sleep. Couldn't think clearly. Couldn't distinguish my thoughts from his manipulation. If you can burn him out without killing me, do it."
"I'll try." I channel Nephilim fire, golden light mixed with shadow energy, targeting the fragment without damaging Michael's core consciousness.
The fragment resists. Tries to hide deeper in Michael's corruption. Tries to spread into his grief and use his trauma as shield.
But I'm ninety point two percent corrupted. I understand demonic nature intimately. And I'm also still human enough to understand grief.
"Michael, think about your family." I keep channeling while speaking. "Think about who you were before the accident. Before the grief. Before Asmodai offered false comfort. That person is still there. Still you. Anchor to that memory while I burn out everything else."
Michael focuses. His consciousness stabilizes around memories of his wife and daughter. Around moments of joy before tragedy took them.
And in that stability, Asmodai's fragment becomes visible. Becomes vulnerable.
I strike. Nephilim fire burning through demonic presence. Not destroying Michael's corruption entirely, he'll still be damaged, still be compromised, but removing the active fragment that's been manipulating him.
Asmodai's consciousness screams as it dissolves. One-seventh of his backup plan eliminated.
Michael collapses. Breathing hard. Crying. But free.
"Thank you." He looks at me with eyes that are no longer red. "I can...I can think clearly now. For the first time in months, my thoughts are actually mine."
"You're welcome." I help him stand. "Michael, there's a shelter three blocks north. They're coordinating supernatural recovery efforts. Tell them Sam Drewsbury sent you. They'll help with the remaining corruption."
"I will." He staggers away, leaning on buildings for support but moving under his own power.
"One down." Kieran appears beside me. "Sam, how are you holding up?"
"Functional." Through the soul-bond, he can feel that I'm lying. "Kieran, let's keep moving. Six more fragments to purge before dawn."
We hunt through Seattle. Each fragment is unique, different vessels, different corruption levels, different relationships with Asmodai's influence.
The corporate executive fights the exorcism. Doesn't want to lose the power Asmodai gave her. Kieran has to physically restrain her while I burn the fragment out.
The fae warrior accepts the purging gratefully. He's been fighting iron poisoning for months and Asmodai's fragment has made the battle nearly impossible.
By the time we reach the fourth vessel, a college student who made a deal to pass her exams, the sun is rising over wounded Seattle.
"Three fragments remaining." Echo coordinates through spiritual channels. "Sam, Marcus and David have located two more vessels. But the seventh..." She hesitates. "The seventh fragment is moving. Deliberately avoiding detection. Like it knows we're hunting it."
"Because it does know." I land on a rooftop to rest for thirty seconds. "Echo, Asmodai's fragments share information. Every time we purge one, the others learn from it. Adapt. The seventh fragment has been watching us hunt the first six and adjusting accordingly."
"Then we change tactics." Kieran joins me on the rooftop. "Sam, we've been purging fragments one at a time. Sequential elimination. What if we coordinated simultaneous strikes? Hit all three remaining fragments at once before they can warn each other?"
"That requires splitting our forces." But I'm already processing the tactical advantage. "Echo, Marcus, can you handle solo purging? Can you burn out fragments without my Nephilim fire to target demonic presence?"
"Rhodes taught me something while we were trapped in shadow Seattle." Echo's voice carries new confidence. "Sam, I've been existing as pure spirit for hours now. Been learning to manipulate spiritual energy the way you manipulate Nephilim power. I think...I think I can perform exorcisms spiritually. Burn fragments using ghost-fire instead of physical flame."
"Ghost-fire?" I've never heard the term.
"It's what happens when spirits channel their existence as weapon." Rhodes manifests beside Echo. "Sam, Echo and I spent three years learning to survive in shadow Seattle. Learning to fight using consciousness as our only tool. She can burn Asmodai's fragments. She just needs confidence to try."
"Then try." I make the decision. "Echo, Marcus, you take vessel five. David, Rhodes, you take vessel six. Kieran and I will handle the seventh fragment, the one that's been avoiding detection. We coordinate strikes in three minutes. Simultaneous purging across three locations. Don't give the fragments time to warn each other."
"Understood." Echo's spiritual form solidifies with determination. "Sam, see you after the purging."
They vanish, spirits moving faster than physical travel allows.
"Just us again." Kieran stands beside me. "Sam, the seventh fragment. Where is it?"
"Searching." I extend my senses through the artifact, feeling for demonic presence. "Kieran, it's deliberately masking itself. Using the ambient corruption from last night's war to hide its signature. I can't pinpoint exact location."
"Then we draw it out." Kieran's voice carries three centuries of hunting experience. "Sam, what does the fragment want most?"
"To reconstitute Asmodai." The answer is obvious. "The fragment wants to reunite with the other six pieces and rebuild the demon lord's consciousness."
"So we offer it that opportunity." Kieran checks his knife. "Sam, you're the bridge-walker. The woman who sealed dimensional barriers and dissolved Asmodai's primary form. If the fragment believes it can possess you, use your power to reopen those barriers and reconstitute in a stronger vessel than any human could provide...wouldn't it take that chance?"
"You're suggesting I serve as bait." I process the tactical logic. "Kieran, if the fragment attempts possession and succeeds, it gets access to Nephilim abilities and the artifact. That's...that's worse than Asmodai in Maria's body. That's demon lord consciousness in a ninety percent corrupted bridge-walker."
"Which is why I'll be ready to stop you if possession succeeds." Kieran's voice is steady. "Sam, we've done this dance all week. You take risks. I prepare to contain the fallout. This is just one more iteration."
"One more iteration that could destroy Seattle if we miscalculate." But I'm already channeling power through the artifact, making myself visible as target. "Kieran, if the fragment possesses me, you'll have seconds to strike before it gains full control. Can you execute me that fast?"
"I've been preparing all week." His honesty is brutal and reassuring simultaneously. "Sam, I love you. I'm partnered with you through a soul-bond that makes your consciousness part of mine. And I will absolutely execute you without hesitation if you become the threat we've been fighting against. That's not contradiction. That's love that's strong enough to make impossible choices."
"Strong enough." I spread my wings, making myself as visible and vulnerable as possible. "Then let's draw out the seventh fragment. Let's end this hunt before Asmodai finds a way to reconstitute despite our efforts."
I channel power openly. Not attacking. Not defending. Just...existing as corrupted bridge-walker with Nephilim abilities and a bonded artifact that could theoretically reopen sealed barriers.
The perfect target for a desperate demon lord fragment looking for any path back to existence.
"Come on." I whisper it to the dawn. "Asmodai, I know you're watching. I know one piece of you is still out there, still planning, still hoping for reconstitution. Here's your chance. Possess the bridge-walker. Use my corruption as your anchor. Rebuild yourself in a vessel strong enough to challenge both angels and demons. All you have to do is take me."
Silence.
Then movement. Not physical but spiritual, consciousness approaching from a direction that doesn't exist in three-dimensional space.
"He's coming." Kieran's hand goes to his knife. "Sam, the fragment is approaching from the shadow realm. Using dimensional shortcuts Asmodai learned from monitoring you all week."
"Let him approach." I hold position despite every instinct screaming to defend. "Kieran, when he strikes for possession, I need you to wait. Need you to let him think he's succeeding. Then when his consciousness is fully committed to the possession attempt, fully vulnerable...that's when you strike. Not at me. At him. Use the soul-bond to target the fragment directly."
"That's..." Kieran processes the plan. "Sam, that's insane. I'm supposed to let Asmodai's fragment partially possess you so I can strike it through our connection? What if the possession succeeds before I can strike? What if the fragment takes control faster than I can stop it?"
"Then you execute me while there's still enough of Sam Drewsbury left to accept that choice." I meet his eyes. "Kieran, this is the only way to guarantee we get the seventh fragment. If we attack it normally, it'll flee back to shadow Seattle and hide for years. But if we draw it into possession attempt and strike while it's vulnerable...we end Asmodai's threat permanently."
"I hate this plan." But Kieran is positioning himself. "Sam, I'm ready. Draw the fragment in. I'll strike when you signal."
The fragment attacks.
It's not violent. Not dramatic. Just...subtle infiltration. Asmodai's consciousness sliding into mine like poison through cracks in armor.
I feel it spreading. Feel the demon lord's intelligence analyzing my corruption, my abilities, my connection to the artifact. Feel him preparing to hijack my consciousness the way Pedro hijacked Maria.
"Now, Kieran!" I shout through both voice and soul-bond. "Strike now!"
Kieran's knife flashes. Not toward my flesh but toward the metaphysical connection between us—the soul-bond that links our supernatural conditions.
And through that bond, he channels three centuries of curse directly into Asmodai's fragment.
The demon lord's consciousness screams. Not prepared for attack from that angle. Not prepared for hunter's curse weaponized through partnership bond.
The fragment burns. Dissolves. Leaves my consciousness as quickly as it entered.
Seven fragments purged. Asmodai's backup plan eliminated completely.
I collapse. The possession attempt left traces—corruption spiking briefly to ninety point four percent before settling back to ninety point two.
"Sam!" Kieran catches me before I hit the ground. "Are you...is the fragment gone? Are you still you?"
"Still me." I force words through exhaustion. "Kieran, the fragment dissolved. Asmodai's consciousness is fully eliminated now. No more backup plans. No more contingencies. Just...gone."
"Thank god." He holds me while I recover. "Sam, that was the stupidest, most reckless, most effective plan I've seen in three centuries. Don't ever do it again."
"No promises." But I'm smiling. "Kieran, we did it. We sealed the barriers. Dissolved Asmodai. Purged all seven fragments. Saved Seattle from cosmic war. We actually...we actually won."
"For now." His voice carries cautious optimism. "Sam, there's still..."
Reality tears.
Not from external threat but from internal. The artifact around my neck pulses with energy it shouldn't contain.
"No." I stare at the ancient Nephilim technology. "That's not...the barriers are sealed. The ritual is complete. Why is the artifact still..."
"Because there's a eighth fragment." Echo's voice cuts through spiritual channels with desperate urgency. "Sam, we miscounted! Rhodes just discovered Asmodai planted a contingency inside the artifact itself! A fragment of his consciousness embedded in the celestial technology years ago! When you seal the barriers using the artifact, you're going to activate his final trap!"
"The artifact has been compromised this entire time?" I reach for it but stop. "Echo, if I remove the artifact now, will that trigger the fragment?"
"We don't know!" Echo sounds panicked. "Sam, Rhodes and David are analyzing it, but the fragment is deeply embedded! It's wrapped around the artifact's core functionality! Removing it might collapse the barrier sealing! But leaving it active means Asmodai has access to your Nephilim power through the bonded connection!"
"Then we purge it." I make the decision. "Echo, get Rhodes and David here now. We're performing one final exorcism. We're burning Asmodai's last fragment out of the artifact while I'm wearing it."
"That could kill you!" Kieran's voice is sharp. "Sam, the artifact is bonded to your genetics! Burning a fragment out of bonded technology while you're wearing it means burning through your own consciousness!"
"Then I'll survive the burning." I spread my wings despite exhaustion. "Kieran, we don't have a choice. The fragment is embedded in the artifact. The artifact is bonded to me. The only way to reach the fragment is through me. So that's what we do."
"Together." Kieran doesn't let go. "Sam, if you're burning Asmodai out of the artifact, I'm anchoring you through the soul-bond. You won't face this alone."
"Neither will you." Echo manifests with Rhodes, David, Marcus, and Tyler. "Sam, the entire spirit network is here. We'll anchor you from the spiritual side while Kieran anchors you physically. You burn the fragment. We keep you alive during the process."
"All of us." David's voice is firm. "Sam, you're my sister. You saved Seattle. You dissolved a demon lord. You made impossible choices all week. Let us help with one final purging."
I look at them, my team. My family. The people who've been fighting beside me through corruption and curses and cosmic war.
"Okay." I touch the artifact. "Everyone anchor me. Kieran, if this goes wrong, if the purging kills me or the fragment takes control..."
"I'll make the necessary choice." His voice is steady. "Sam, I've been preparing all week. I'm still prepared. But I'm also betting you survive this. Betting you burn Asmodai's final fragment and walk away strong enough to build whatever comes next."
"Whatever comes next." I close my eyes and channel power through the artifact, searching for Asmodai's embedded consciousness. "Then let's clear the path to that future."
The fragment reveals itself. Hidden in the artifact's core. Wrapped around the celestial technology like cancer around healthy tissue.
Asmodai's voice whispers in my mind: "Clever bridge-walker. You found my final contingency. But can you burn it out without destroying yourself?"
"Watch me." I pour Nephilim fire directly into the artifact, targeting the fragment with precision born from ninety percent corruption.
The burning starts.
Not physical pain but existential agony, my consciousness being torn apart as I purge the fragment from technology bonded to my genetics.
Kieran anchors me through the soul-bond. The spirit network anchors me from beyond. My brother and Rhodes and Marcus and Tyler and Echo all holding my consciousness stable while I burn.
And through it all, I feel Asmodai's fragment dissolving. Feel the demon lord's final piece screaming as centuries of planning and manipulation end in one psychic investigator's stubborn refusal to become his weapon.
The fragment burns completely.
The artifact goes dark.
And I collapse into Kieran's arms, barely conscious but alive.
"It's done." Echo's voice sounds distant. "Sam, the fragment is purged. The artifact is clean. Asmodai is fully eliminated. No more contingencies. No more backup plans. He's...he's actually gone."
"Gone." I force my eyes open. "Echo, what about you? Rhodes said you could humanize using his help? Can spirits become human again?"
"I don't know." Echo manifests beside Tyler. "But Sam, with the barriers sealed and Asmodai destroyed, Rhodes and I have been researching. There might be ways to restore corporeal form using the same Nephilim techniques that created spirit anchoring. It would take time. Take experimentation. But maybe...maybe ghosts don't have to stay ghosts forever."
"Then research." I stand shakily. "Echo, you and Tyler deserve physical existence. Deserve the chance to build something beyond spiritual coordination. If there's any way to restore you both, we'll find it."
"Together." Tyler's spiritual form wraps around Echo's. "Sam, we're a team. We save Seattle together. We rebuild together. We figure out spirit-to-human restoration together. That's how this works now."
"That's how this works." I spread my wings one final time. "Kieran, help me fly. I need to see Seattle from above. Need to confirm the barriers are sealed and the city is healing and that everything we fought for actually mattered."
We take flight together, cursed hunter and corrupted bridge-walker, sharing burdens through soul-bond that shouldn't exist but does.
And from above, Seattle looks wounded but surviving. Healing slowly. Building bridges between supernatural and human communities that will define the city's future.
"We did it." Kieran's voice carries wonder. "Sam, we actually did it. Saved the world. Dissolved a demon lord. Purged all his fragments. Sealed dimensional barriers permanently. We...we won."
"We survived." I correct gently. "Kieran, winning would be returning to who we were before this started. But I'm ninety point two percent corrupted with permanent wings. You're cursed and soul-bonded to share my corruption. Echo and Tyler are dead but still coordinating. Marcus and David and Rhodes are ghosts who may never return to physical form. This isn't victory. This is just...the new reality we have to build on."
"Then let's build it well." Kieran pulls me close mid-flight. "Sam, corrupted or not, cursed or not, changed or not...I love you. Love this version of you. Love whatever version comes next. And I'm choosing to stay by your side through all of it."
"Even though I'm barely human?" I have to ask.
"Especially because you're barely human and still choosing humanity anyway." His answer is immediate. "Sam, ninety percent corruption didn't stop you from rescuing demon hostages. Didn't stop you from burning Asmodai's fragments instead of accepting his offers. Didn't stop you from making the right choice at midnight despite every tactical reason to choose wrong. That's not corruption. That's character surviving despite impossible odds."
"Character." I let myself believe it. "Kieran, let's go home. Let's rest. And tomorrow, let's start figuring out how to build a life in the aftermath of saving the world."
We fly toward the sunrise over Seattle, two people permanently changed by cosmic war but choosing to define that change through partnership rather than isolation.
Behind us, the spirit network coordinates reconstruction.
Around us, the city heals.
And within me, the artifact sits dormant but clean, no longer carrying Asmodai's consciousness, just the potential for future bridge-walking between sealed dimensions.
The barriers are closed. The demon lord is destroyed. And somehow, impossibly, we're still here to witness what comes next.
That's victory enough.
