The Binding Ceremony
Moonlight spilled through the forest canopy as Kai, Rowan, Luna, and Eira hurried along the secret path. The pendant at Kai's neck pulsed with blue light, getting warmer with each step.
"Are you sure about this?" Luna whispered, glancing nervously over her shoulder. "Fenrir's wolves could be anywhere."
"We have no choice," Kai answered. "The binding ceremony can't wait. If we're going to find the other bloodline children before Fenrir does, we need all the power we can get."
They reached a small clearing where seven old stones formed a perfect circle. In the center stood a flat rock altar, its surface carved with crescent moons and wolf symbols.
"This is the place," Eira said, setting down her pack. "The oldest sacred ground shared by both packs before the split."
Rowan took Kai's hand. "Are you ready for this? Once we complete the binding ceremony, our lives will be forever linked."
Kai squeezed Rowan's fingers. "I'm ready. We're already fated mates. This just makes it official."
Luna stood watch at the edge of the area while Eira prepared the altar. She scattered dried herbs, put seven blue crystals in a circle, and lit candles that flickered with strange blue flames.
"The ritual is simple," Eira explained. "But powerful. You'll need to share blood and speak the ancient words while touching the pendant."
"What will happen?" Rowan asked.
Eira shrugged. "No one knows exactly. No binding ceremony has been performed between a Silverfang and Blackthorn in over a thousand years."
"That's reassuring," Kai muttered.
"Time's running out," Luna called from her place. "The moon will reach its peak soon."
Kai and Rowan knelt facing each other at the altar. Eira gave them a silver knife with a bone handle.
"First, the blood oath," she directed.
With calm hands, Kai cut a small line across their palm, then passed the knife to Rowan who did the same. They pressed their bleeding hands together.
"Now the pendant," Eira said.
With their free hands, they both gripped Lyra's crescent moon ring. The blue stone at its center glowed bright as moonlight.
"Repeat after me," Eira whispered. "Blood to blood, soul to soul..."
"Blood to blood, soul to soul," they repeated.
"Moon above, earth below..."
"Moon above, earth below."
"Two packs united, two hearts as one..."
"Two packs united, two hearts as one."
"What was broken shall be undone."
"What was broken shall be undone."
The moment they finished speaking, the blue stone in the pendant burst with light so bright it blinded them. Kai felt a jolt like lightning rush through their body. The clearing disappeared.
Suddenly, Kai and Rowan stood in a different forest, watching ghostly figures in ancient clothes gather around a fire. Though they couldn't move, they could see and hear everything.
"The first pack," Rowan whispered, his voice sounding far away though he stood right beside Kai.
A strong woman with silver-streaked hair raised her hands to the sky. "The moon spirits have blessed us!" she called. "They've given us the power to shift forms, to run with four legs under the full moon!"
"Alpha Lunaria," a voice whispered in their minds. "The first wolf."
The scene changed. Now they saw two men arguing furiously.
"The gifts of the moon are not to be shared with outsiders!" one shouted. His eyes flashed gold in the firelight.
"We cannot turn away those who seek shelter!" the other answered. "The pack must grow if we are to survive!"
"Blackthorn and Silverfang," Kai realized. "The first split."
Another flash. A young woman ran through the bush, clutching a baby to her chest. Behind her, wolves howled.
"Mother," Kai gasped, recognizing Lyra's face from Elder Blackwood's memories.
Lyra stumbled into a cave where a man waited. "They're coming," she panted. "We must hide the child."
"They'll never stop hunting us," the man said, his face twisted with fear.
"Then we'll give them something else to fear," Lyra answered. She pressed her pendant to the baby's chest—to Kai's chest. "One day, you'll unite what was broken."
The visions whirled faster now: seven families fleeing into different territories, seven children carrying the old bloodline, and behind them all, a shadow with glowing red eyes.
With a gasp, Kai and Rowan returned to the clearing. The candles had burned out. Luna and Eira were looking at them with wide eyes.
"What happened?" Luna asked. "You both went rigid, then your eyes started glowing blue. You've been frozen like statues for ten minutes!"
Kai looked down at their joined hands. The cuts had healed fully, leaving identical crescent-shaped scars.
"We saw the past," Rowan revealed. "The beginning of the packs. The first Blackthorn and Silverfang."
"And the other bloodline children," Kai added. "There are seven of us, scattered across different territories."
"Did you see where to find them?" Eira asked excitedly.
Before Kai could answer, the ring at their neck tugged sharply, pointing north. Seven faint blue lights appeared in the distance, like stars on the horizon.
"I don't need to see them," Kai said. "I can feel them."
Rowan gasped suddenly, doubling over. "Something's wrong," he groaned.
Kai felt it too—a cold shadow brushing against their minds, searching, hunting.
"Fenrir," Luna whispered, drawing her knife. "He knows what we did. He felt the ceremony."
The shadows between the trees increased. Red eyes blinked open in the darkness.
"He's found us," Kai said. "But he's found something else too."
In their mind's eye, Kai saw a young woman running through an unfamiliar forest, clutching a small pendant similar to Kai's. Behind her, shadow dogs closed in.
"The first bloodline child," Kai gasped. "Fenrir's already hunting her."
"Where?" Rowan asked.
"North, in the Crystal Valley. We need to move now!"
As they grabbed their supplies, a bone-chilling howl cut through the night. It wasn't just one wolf—it was dozens, all around them.
"Too late," Luna whispered. "We're surrounded."
The red eyes moved closer. Eira readied her stick, glowing with protective sigils.
"There's too many," she worried.
Kai looked at Rowan, feeling their newly stronger bond humming between them. "Take my hand," they said.
As their fingers linked, the pendant blazed with blue fire. The power that had been awakened during the binding rite surged through them both.
"Together," Rowan said, his eyes sparkling blue to match Kai's.
They raised their joined hands as the shadow dogs lunged from all sides. Blue light burst outward in a shockwave, throwing the attackers back.
For a moment, the shadows withdrew. But then a deep, booming laugh echoed through the trees.
"Found you," Fenrir's voice growled. "And now I know what you're looking for."
A huge black wolf with red eyes stepped into the clearing. But it wasn't looking at Kai and Rowan. Its hungry look was fixed on the pendant.
"The last piece of the puzzle," Fenrir said. "Thank you for leading me to it."
The shadow wolf rushed straight for Kai's throat.
