Chapter 182

Chapter 182

Flames flickered outside the car, and I saw red liquid gushing out.

Did those people who wanted to kill me have any chance of survival? Did Edward intend to end their lives?

But what did it matter if they die? They stopped my car, and killed the driver; they deserved it.

It was just that I couldn't bring myself to end someone's life. Otherwise, I would have fired the gun when I had it.

The car windows had excellent soundproofing; I could barely hear the gunshots.

Some of them were dead, and others injured. Edward finally walked over to me and gently knocked on the window. I rolled it down but didn't open the door.

"It's over."

As soon as I lowered the window, a strong smell of blood struck me, filling me with nausea.

"How many are dead?" I couldn't hide the tremor in my voice. "You killed people."

When I saw his calm expression, it became evident that this was not his first time engaging in such an act.

"I don't know. They're probably not all dead yet. If you call an ambulance now, some might survive."

Edward smirked. "Yes, I killed them. But if I hadn't, you wouldn't be alive right now. Even so, are you going to blame me?"

"I'm not blaming you, and I just..."

I had never witnessed such a bloody and intense scene.

Edward chuckled. "Alright, I was just teasing you. Get out of the car. I'll take you away. The police will handle this. They wanted you dead; they deserved it."

I opened the car door, stepping onto the blood-stained ground, and softly said to Edward, "Thank you."

If it weren't for him tonight, I would surely be dead.

Because I knew, no matter what they did to me, I could never pull the trigger.

Edward saved my life.

I followed him into his car.

His subordinates stayed behind, while he personally drove me away.

"Is this how you treat your subordinates?"

Away from the bloody scene, I felt much better.

"They're staying to wait for the police. Otherwise, how would we explain so many deaths?"

I calmed myself and asked, "When I observe your demeanor, this isn't your first time. Is it really that easy to kill someone?"

Edward just chuckled.

"You get used to it."

I didn't really understand Edward.

His past and his strength turned out to be far more complicated than I had ever imagined.

"I never saw it before."

I used to think... Edward was just a bit extreme.

"There are many things you don't know. We'll have more time to understand each other in the future."

His words made me uncomfortable.

"So how did you find me? And so coincidentally?"

It was not impossible that Edward orchestrated all this, but today I didn't suspect him.

"I wasn't looking for you. I just happened to pass by."

The car sped up, quickly merging onto the highway.

"I had some business to attend to, but since I ran into you, I'll settle you first."

Business?

When I think about those gunmen, it becomes clear that Edward's business probably wasn't entirely aboveboard.

But... I didn't want to know.

Regardless, he saved my life.

We didn't speak for the rest of the journey.

I texted Milo, informing him of everything that happened, including the driver's death.

When I mentioned Edward, Milo replied: [Why are you with him?]

The Reyes family was always wary of Edward, so his confusion was understandable.

[He saved me.]

I wasn't defending him, just stating the facts.

But through text, it seemed to be misinterpreted.

"Saved you? How do you know he wasn't just putting on a show?"

Why does Milo get so worked up whenever Edward is mentioned?

"I don't know, but I almost died, you know?"

I didn't read Milo's subsequent messages.

I put down my phone and leaned against the window, closing my eyes to rest.

I was exhausted and didn't want to argue with anyone.

Edward finally dropped me off at my apartment complex.

Worried I might encounter danger again, he insisted on escorting me to the building.

Before parting, he said, "Raymond has arrived. He should attend our engagement party."

"I know. I saw him this morning, but he didn't see me."

I didn't believe Raymond would attend the engagement party without causing trouble.

"Since he's coming, be careful at the party. Knowing him, he'll try to make a move against me."

Raymond wouldn't come to Vesperia without doing something.

Edward suddenly turned, giving me a meaningful look. "Speaking of which, I want to ask you a question."

I had a bad feeling.

"If I make Raymond die at our engagement party, would you be happy?"

My hand froze on the car door.

Would I really feel happy if Raymond were dead?

Even though I hated him, wished he were dead, I never really thought about killing him.

But if Edward said it, he could definitely do it.

"His death wouldn't benefit you now."

My thoughts were chaotic.

My words revealed my true feelings.

I still didn't want him dead.

Even though my misery was all because of him.

"I'd rather see him live in pain and regret."

Edward's smile widened. "I understand."

He didn't explain his question.

Sometimes death was a release; living in agony was the most painful revenge.

When I got home, Avery was still awake.

Or rather, she had woken up from a nap and was making food for Liliana.

Seeing me return, she was surprised.

"Why didn't you tell me you were coming back?"

I rubbed my forehead in frustration. "Something happened. I forgot to tell you."

I almost died on the road...

Avery put Liliana to sleep and returned to the living room, yawning. "You should rest early too."

I decided not to tell her about tonight. If I did, she probably wouldn't sleep well.

Lying down, I checked my phone and saw Milo's questioning message. I didn't feel like responding.

[You sent me to meet my mother. Why didn't you tell me beforehand?]

Since he questioned me, I could question him too.

Tamsin was alive, and he knew her whereabouts but kept it secret.

Milo: [If I were to tell you about her, it would bring harm to both you and her. Didn't you get targeted tonight?]

I almost laughed in anger.

[So you knew I'd be targeted and still sent me, even gave me those important documents to deliver. You really don't care if I die on the way, do you, dear uncle?]
