48- Trust on him or death
The gentle lapping of the water against the boat was a soothing backdrop to our conversation, a reminder of the peaceful retreat we had carved out for ourselves amidst the chaos of life. I glanced at Julián, his face illuminated by the afternoon sun, and I couldn’t help but admire the way he wore his emotions so openly. It was a refreshing contrast to the weight he often carried.
“Do you ever think about what it’ll be like when the baby arrives?” he asked, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled between us.
“Every day,” I admitted, leaning back slightly and trying to imagine our future filled with the laughter of a child. “I think about the little things—the first steps, the first words. I want to be there for every moment.”
Julián nodded, his expression thoughtful. “I want that too. But sometimes I worry about how we’ll manage it all. It’s a big change.”
“It is,” I agreed, feeling the seriousness of the topic seep into the lightness of our day. “But we’ll face it together. We’ve already been through so much, and we came out stronger. This will just be another part of our journey.”
He took a deep breath, his gaze lingering on the horizon where the water met the sky. “You’re right. It’s just that sometimes I feel like I’m not ready. Like I’m going to fail at being a parent.”
“Hey,” I said gently, turning his face toward me with my free hand. “You’re going to be an amazing parent. You care so deeply; that’s what matters most. And you won’t be alone in this. I’ll be right beside you.”
He smiled, though I could still see the flicker of doubt in his eyes. “It’s just hard to shake off the fears, you know?”
“I get it. But let’s promise to talk about those fears. No more holding back. We’ll tackle them together,” I said, squeezing his hand reassuringly.
“Okay,” he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll try.”
“That’s all I ask,” I said, feeling a swell of pride for him. “And remember, we’ll have a little one who will love us no matter what. Just think of the joy they’ll bring into our lives.”
As if on cue, a flock of birds took flight over the lake, their wings spread wide against the brilliant blue sky. Julián’s face lit up, and I could see the worry begin to fade, if only for a moment.
“Look at them,” he said, pointing. “They’re so free.”
“Just like us,” I replied, grinning at him. “We have the chance to create a beautiful life, Julián. Full of adventure and love.”
“Adventure, huh?” he mused, a playful glint returning to his eyes. “Are you suggesting we take the baby fishing too?”
“Absolutely!” I laughed, picturing us with a tiny fishing rod. “We’ll make it a family tradition. Just imagine all the stories we’ll tell them.”
“Okay, you’ve got me sold,” he said, laughter bubbling up from deep within him.“Remember that time we went hiking?” Julián suddenly asked, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “You were convinced you could find us a shortcut, and we ended up lost for hours?”
I laughed, the memory flooding back. “I thought I was being resourceful! But I’ll admit, it was a disaster. At least we found that beautiful waterfall in the end.”
“True,” he nodded, a grin spreading across his face. “And you were determined to swim in it, even though it was freezing!”
“Hey, a little cold never stopped me from adventure!” I shot back playfully. “Besides, you jumped in right after me!”
“Guilty as charged,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “But that’s what I love about us. We take risks and make the best out of every situation, no matter how it turns out.”
“Exactly,” I agreed, feeling a swell of affection for him. “And that’s how I know we’ll be great parents. We’ll teach our child to embrace life’s adventures and learn from the challenges.”
Julián’s expression turned serious for a moment, and he looked out at the water, lost in thought. “You really believe that? That we can do this? Be good parents?”
“Without a doubt,” I replied earnestly. “We’ll have our moments of doubt, but as long as we have each other, I know we’ll navigate through it all. We’re a team.”
He met my gaze, and the warmth in his eyes made my heart flutter. “You make me feel so much better about everything. I can’t imagine doing this with anyone else.”
“Same here,” I said softly. “We’re in this together, Julián.”
Just then, the bobber in the water began to bounce vigorously. My heart raced with excitement. “Wait! I think I have a bite!” I exclaimed, gripping the fishing rod tightly.
“Go for it!” Julián urged, leaning closer, his excitement mirrored in his eyes.
I pulled back on the rod, feeling the struggle of the fish beneath the surface. “Come on, come on!” I muttered under my breath, adrenaline coursing through me.
After a few moments of tugging and reeling, I finally saw a flash of silver break the surface. “I caught it!” I screamed, hardly able to contain my joy.
Julián jumped up, clapping his hands. “You did it! Look at that beauty!”
I reeled in the fish, laughing uncontrollably as Julián rushed to help me. “What do we do now?” I asked, breathless with excitement.
“First, take a picture! This is a moment to remember,” he said, pulling out his phone.
We posed together, my face lit up with joy, holding the fish like a trophy. Julián snapped the picture, capturing the happiness radiating from us. “You’re going to be one amazing storyteller when our child asks about this day,” he said, his voice warm and sincere.
“Only if you help me tell it,” I replied, nudging him playfully. “You’re the one who cheered me on every step of the way.”
“I’m always going to be your biggest fan,” he promised, his eyes meeting mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.
As we released the fish back into the water, I felt a profound sense of gratitude wash over me. This moment, this adventure, was just a glimpse into the future we would build together—a future filled with love, laughter, and countless memories just like this one.
“Ready for round two?” Julián asked, a playful glint in his eyes as he handed me the fishing gear again.
“Bring it on!” I replied, determination in my voice. “Today is just the beginning.”
