Chapter Fifty-Four
Chapter Fifty-Four
Lisa and Emma still at their cozy table in the restaurant, chatting about everything from work to mutual friends. But as they talked, Lisa's mind was elsewhere.
As Emma laughed about something, Lisa smiled and nodded along, but she wasn't really hearing it. She was caught up in her own thoughts, comparing her life to her friends'. Why did they have loving relationships and she was stuck dealing with Marcus?
"...and then I told Mike he had to help more with the wedding planning," Emma said, grinning.
Lisa snapped back, forcing a smile. "Sounds like he's on it."
Emma looked at her curiously. "You okay, Lis? You seem a bit... off."
Lisa brushed it off. "I'm fine. Just a bit tired."
They continued chatting, but Lisa's mind kept drifting back to what she didn't have. The lunch date ended with hugs and promises to catch up soon. As they parted ways, Lisa headed out, still stuck in her thoughts.
As she settled into the backseat of the taxi, her mind began to swirl with thoughts. She couldn't shake off Emma's words about Jamie - had she really misread the situation that badly? And why was it that everyone around her seemed to be finding love and happiness, while she was stuck in limbo?
She thought about Emma, glowing with happiness with Mike, and Rachel, with Jake wanting a committed relationship with her. Lisa felt like she was the only one who was lost, like she didn't fit in with her friends' lives anymore.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt like an outcast. Why couldn't she have a simple, happy relationship like everyone else? Why did she always seem to attract the wrong kind of attention, like Marcus?
As the taxi navigated through traffic, Lisa's thoughts swirled into a mess. She just wanted to go home, crawl into bed, and sleep off the feelings of inadequacy and confusion.
She stared out the window, feeling a mix of emotions: surprise about Jamie, envy about her friends' relationships, and frustration with her own life. The city outside blurred as her thoughts consumed her.
The taxj pulled up to her house, and Lisa got out, wanting nothing more than to escape into her own space.
Lisa woke up to the sound of her phone ringing, groggily reaching for it on her bedside table. She blinked at the screen, seeing her mom's name flash on the display. She answered, trying to shake off the sleep.
"Hello, ma?" she mumbled.
Her mom's voice came through, sounding concerned. "Lisa, sweetie, I'm so glad I caught you. We need to talk."
Lisa sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes. "What's going on, Mom? What time is it?"
"It's morning, dear. About 9 AM. I need to talk to you about something. Marcus came to the house yesterday."
Lisa's foggy brain suddenly perked up. "Marcus? What did he say?"
Her mom took a breath. "He said you've been ignoring his calls, that you're not treating him right. He said you want to be with another man and that's why you're fighting, because he wants the best for you and is trying to keep you away from someone who's trying to use you."
Lisa's eyes widened in shock and anger. "What? Mom, no... that's not what's going on. Marcus is... he's not telling you the truth."
Her mom sounded concerned, but also a bit defensive of Marcus. "But, sweetie, he seemed so sincere. He said you've been ignoring his calls and he's worried about you. He said he's trying to protect you from someone who's just using you."
Lisa felt a surge of frustration and anger. This was exactly what Marcus had been doing - manipulating people, controlling the narrative. She realized he must have been talking to her family, poisoning them against her, while she thought he was just ignoring her.
As her mom continued to talk, Lisa found herself trying to deny everything Marcus had told her, but it seemed like her mom was too caught up in what Marcus had said. She was repeating things he had told her, and Lisa could tell her mom believed it.
Lisa decided to switch tactics. She didn't want to argue with her mom, not when it seemed like she was already on Marcus's side. So she played along, trying to keep the peace.
"Okay, Mom. I'll talk to Marcus. I'll sort things out with him," Lisa said, trying to sound calm.
Her mom sounded a bit relieved. "Good, sweetie. I think that's best. He just wants what's best for you."
Lisa nodded, even though her mom couldn't see her. "Yeah, Mom. I'll talk to him."
As they wrapped up the conversation, Lisa felt a sense of relief that it was over, but also a knot in her stomach. She knew she needed to deal with Marcus, and she wasn't looking forward to it.
After hanging up, Lisa sat there for a moment, thinking about what to do next. She knew she couldn't let Marcus continue to manipulate her mom, but she also didn't want to cause a scene.
She sat there, lost in thought, as she replayed the conversation with her mom and the earlier chat with Emma about Jamie. She felt like everyone around her was moving forward, finding love and happiness, while she was stuck in limbo.
She thought about how Rachel was off talking to Jake about their relationship, Emma was glowing with Mike, and even Jamie... Lisa's mind lingered on what Emma had said about Jamie liking her. But if Jamie couldn't summon the courage to speak to her and ask her out, what was she supposed to do?
Lisa's thoughts took a turn as she considered her options. She didn't want to be alone, and with Marcus... she felt like she had to go with the flow. She didn't love him, but maybe that wasn't the point. Maybe the point was to just have someone.
She decided then that she'd go see Marcus at his house. Lisa got up and started getting ready, her mind numb to the thoughts of what this meant. She didn't know what she wanted, but she knew she couldn't stay stuck like this.
