Chapter Forty Seven

Chapter Forty Seven
Weeks had passed since Marcus had started showing up everywhere Lisa went. At first, she'd thought it was just a phase, that he'd get bored and move on to someone else. But as the days turned into weeks, Lisa had to face the harsh reality: Marcus wasn't going to stop.

She'd tried to convince herself that it was just a matter of playing along, satisfying his ego and pretending to be his girlfriend. But as she'd gotten deeper into the charade, she'd started to realize that Marcus was developing actual feelings for her.

The thought sent a shiver down her spine. She was trapped, with no clear escape route. She felt like she was living a lie, pretending to be someone she wasn't, just to keep Marcus happy.

As the days went by, Lisa started to lose hope. Maybe this was just her life now. Maybe she'd never meet someone who truly cared about her, someone who loved her for who she was. The thought was a crushing weight, bearing down on her shoulders.

She'd always thought she'd be the one in control, the one calling the shots. But Marcus had somehow managed to turn the tables on her, and now she was stuck in a situation she didn't know how to get out of.

Lisa's friends and family were starting to notice the change in her. Rachel, her best friend, was shocked by the transformation in Lisa. She'd gone from being a vibrant, outgoing person to a shell of her former self, trapped in a toxic relationship with Marcus.

"Lis, what's going on with you?" Rachel asked, concern etched on her face as they sat in their favorite café. "You've just... changed. You're with Marcus now, and you never complain about him. You're not the same person I used to know."

Lisa forced a smile, trying to hide the desperation that threatened to consume her. "I'm fine, Rach. I just... I realized that Marcus isn't so bad, okay? He's just... misunderstood."

Rachel's eyes narrowed, her voice laced with skepticism. "Misunderstood? Lisa, he's controlling and manipulative. He's using you, and you're just letting him."

Lisa shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Maybe I'm just... settling, Rach. Maybe I'm not good enough for anyone better. Maybe this is just what I deserve."

The words tasted bitter in her mouth, but she forced them out, trying to convince herself that it was true. Maybe she was just destined to be with someone like Marcus, someone who would settle for her.

Rachel's expression softened, and she reached out to grab Lisa's hand. "Lis, don't say that. You're worthy of so much more than this. You deserve someone who loves you for who you are, not someone who tries to change you."

Lisa felt a lump form in her throat as she looked at Rachel. She knew her friend was right, but she didn't know how to make it happen. She didn't know how to break free from Marcus's grasp.

As she walked away from the cafe, Lisa felt a sense of resignation wash over her. She was trapped, and she didn't know how to escape.

The days turned into weeks, and Lisa's life became a blur of Marcus's whims and desires. She went through the motions, pretending to be the perfect girlfriend, but inside, she was dying.

Marcus strolled into Lisa's apartment, a charming smile plastered on his face. He was dressed to impress, his suit tailored to perfection, and his colone wafting through the air, a subtle hint of sophistication. Rachel was lounging on the couch, scrolling through her phone, when Marcus walked in. She looked up, her expression neutral, but her eyes narrowing slightly as she took in Marcus's arrogant demeanor.

"Hey, Rach," Marcus said, his tone casual, as if they were old friends. "Thanks for keeping Lisa company while she gets ready."

Rachel forced a smile, her eyes flicking to the bedroom door, where Lisa was getting dressed. She was trying to play it cool, to support Lisa's decision to give Marcus a chance, but it was getting harder by the minute.

"No problem, Marcus," Rachel said, setting her phone down. "Congratulations on your friend's publication. That sounds impressive."

Marcus beamed with pride, puffing out his chest. "Yeah, it's a big deal. Top journal, top researchers. We're celebrating in style tonight." He launched into a lengthy explanation of his friend's research, using jargon and technical terms that left Rachel's eyes glazing over.

As Marcus talked, Rachel's mind wandered to Lisa, wondering what was going on in her friend's head. She seemed so... chilled lately. Resigned, almost. Like she'd given up on the idea of being happy. Rachel's instincts were screaming at her to intervene, to tell Lisa to snap out of it, but she knew she had to tread carefully.

Lisa emerged from her room, looking stunning in a fitted red dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. Marcus's eyes lit up as he took her in, and he strode over to kiss her cheek.

"You look amazing, babe," he whispered, his voice loud enough for Rachel to hear.

Rachel's expression remained neutral, but her eyes spoke volumes. She was dying to say something, to warn Lisa about Marcus's true nature, but she bit her tongue. She didn't want to push Lisa further away.

As Marcus continued to chat with Rachel, bragging about his friend's research and the party they were attending, Lisa slipped into the conversation, her smile forced.

"Hey, Rach, Marcus's friend is being honored for his research. We're going to meet some really influential people tonight."

Rachel's eyes flicked to Lisa, a silent question in them. _Are you okay with this?_

Lisa's expression was a mask, a carefully crafted facade. She was going through the motions, playing the part of the doting girlfriend. Rachel saw the tension in her shoulders, the slight tremble in her hands, but Marcus seemed oblivious to it all.

As they prepared to leave, Rachel pulled Lisa aside, her voice low. "Lis, you sure about this?"

Lisa's smile wipped, and for a moment, Rachel saw the old Lisa, the one who was strong and fierce. But it was fleeting. The mask slipped back into place.

"Yeah, Rach. I'm fine. Let's go celebrate."
