Chapter Forty Five

Chapter Forty Five
The atmosphere in the room was heavy with unspoken words, the air thick with the weight of Lisa's confession. Rachel's eyes widened as the gravity of the situation dawned on her, her mind reeling with a mix of shock, concern, and a hint of anger.

Lisa sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat, her eyes casting downward as if the weight of her actions was too much to bear. "I had to, Rach. Things were getting out of hand. He was showing up everywhere, causing a scene. I didn't want any more problems, especially with my family."

Rachel's face contorted in a mix of confusion and concern, her brow furrowed as she struggled to comprehend the reasoning behind Lisa's actions. "What do you mean you did what he wanted? What did you do, Lisa?"

Lisa's voice was barely audible, her words trembling with a mix of shame and fear. "I... I agreed to be his girlfriend. Until he gets bored of me or something."

The words hung in the air, a stark reality that left Rachel reeling. Her eyes searched Lisa's face, hoping to find some semblance of understanding, but what she found was a deep-seated fear that chilled her to the bone.

"What?! Why would you do that?" Rachel's voice rose, her tone a mix of shock and frustration, her words tumbling out in a rush.

Lisa's eyes filled with tears, her voice cracking as she spoke. "I didn't know what else to do, Rach. He was suffocating me. He kept saying he'd leave me alone if I just... if I just played along. I was scared, okay?"

The room fell silent, the tension palpable, the only sound the soft hum of the air conditioner. Rachel's anger simmered, a mix of frustration and concern, her mind racing with questions, but she knew she needed to tread carefully.

"Lis, you can't just... you can't sacrifice yourself like that. That's not a solution," Rachel said softly, her voice laced with empathy, her words a gentle reminder that Lisa was not alone.

Lisa shrugged, tears streaming down her face, her body shaking with sobs. "I didn't know what else to do. I just wanted it to stop."

Rachel pulled Lisa into a tight hug, her arms wrapping around her friend like a shield. "We'll get through this together, okay? We'll figure it out."

As they hugged, Rachel's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with a plan, a plan that would put an end to Marcus's games once and for all.

"Lis, I'm here for you, no matter what," Rachel whispered, her voice firm, her words a promise.

The sun had barely risen over the city, casting a pale glow over the sleepy streets, when Lisa made her decision. She needed to get out of her apartment, away from the suffocating feeling that Marcus would show up at any moment. She grabbed her bag, stuffed it with a week's worth of clothes, and slipped out of her apartment, hoping to escape the clingy grasp of her pseudo-boyfriend.

Her destination was her parents' house, a place she knew she could find solace and safety. She hailed a taxi and settled in for the ride, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety wash over her.

As she arrived at her parents' house, she was greeted with warm hugs and a sense of calm. She spent the morning catching up with her family, trying to push the thoughts of Marcus to the back of her mind.

Meanwhile, Marcus showed up at Lisa's apartment, his eyes scanning the hallway as he knocked on the door. Rachel opened it, her expression unfriendly.

"Where's Lisa?" Marcus asked, his voice smooth.

Rachel's instincts kicked in. "She's not here, and she's not interested in seeing you."

Marcus's smile didn't falter. "I'm afraid that's not true, Rach. Lisa's my girlfriend now. I'd like for you to get used to it."

Rachel's temper boiled over. "You're a joke, Marcus. Lisa would never be with you. Never."

Marcus's smile grew wider. "Oh, she already is."

Rachel's anger turned to disgust. "Get out of here, Marcus. You're not welcome."

Marcus leaned in, his voice low. "I'm going to a party tonight. I'd love for you and Lisa to join me."

Rachel's snort was instantaneous. "No way. And Lisa's not going anywhere with you."

Marcus's eyes glided over Rachel's face, searching for a weakness. And then, it slipped out.

Rachel continued to snap at him, her frustration got the better of her. "You should just leave her alone, she's at her parents' house trying to get away from you," she said, instantly regretting the words.

Marcus's expression didn't change, but his eyes seemed to gleam with satisfaction and he turned to leave. "I'll catch up with you later, Rach."

Rachel's eyes widened in horror. She hadn't meant to reveal that.

As he walked away, Rachel's heart sank. She knew she'd made a mistake. A big one. Marcus was headed to Lisa's parents' house, and she was the one who'd told him where to find her.

Rachel grabbed her phone and dialed Lisa's number, her hands shaking with anxiety. "Lis, Marcus knows you're at your parents'.’’

But as she waited for Lisa to answer, she wondered if she was too late.

The clock was ticking, and Rachel could only hope that Lisa would get her message in time.
