Chapter 56 Chapter LVI
Chapter 56 Chapter LVI
A sigh of relief escapes from my mouth when I see his car parked near the garage. He’s still at home. It takes him less than thirty seconds to answer the doorbell. It’s a sight to keep in my memory for a long time. The way he opens the door, the gust of wind slightly making his damp hair flow over his eyes. He’s wearing black chinos, a white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and slightly open in the chest—leaving room for my imagination to run wild—and a pair of white sneakers.
I let out a whistle, taking in the man in front of me from head to toe. His eyes sparkle mischievously as he grins at me, stepping to the side and making room for me to enter. “Sorry, ma’am, but I’m already taken.”
His answer does something to my core that I don’t have time to deal with right now, but he won’t be getting rid of me tonight, that’s for sure. I peck his lips as I step inside, passing by him with the bakery bag in my hand.
“Good answer,” I joke, heading to the kitchen and setting the bag on the counter. “I know you have a full day, so I thought I’d surprise you and bring you some breakfast in order to wish you good luck tonight and also to enjoy some alone time with you before I have to share you with everyone else.” I turn to look at him, my smile widening as I see him looking into the bag, beaming at the sight of so many good things.
“Good lord, you read my mind. I’m starving, and thankfully, I just made some coffee to go with this, so it’s perfect.” Spencer walks toward me, his arms snaking around my waist and pulling me closer to him. “Thank you for doing this. I missed you last night.”
I smile at him, trying not to think about the real reason I didn’t go to meet him yesterday, and hoping he doesn’t notice something is off. Which it’s not. I’m over it, and today is all about Spencer and his record label. My stupid jealousy has no room here.
“Sorry. I intended to visit you, but I didn’t want to disturb you. I know you were super busy,” I say as an excuse. It’s a poor one, and I hate that I wasn’t more present for him during this period, but I also didn’t know how to help. “Sorry I wasn’t there for you more often.”
He frowns at me, pulling me even closer to him. So close that I can feel his heart beating against my own. “You have nothing to apologize for. You’ve been my biggest supporter, and I could never have done this without you. And you’d never disturb me. Are you kidding me?”
I chuckle, shoving him slightly on the shoulder. “You know what I mean. And of course you’d be able to do this without me. You decided to come here and open your record label before we were even back together.”
Spencer grins at me and kisses me softly on the lips before pulling away to stare into my eyes, his blue pools piercing into my soul. “We weren’t back together, but you were the biggest reason why I returned. So, I guess you helped me big time, even if you didn’t know it.”
My cheeks feel like they are about to burst into flames, so I break free from his embrace—afraid I will never be able to if I don’t talk some sense into myself—and step over to the kitchen counter to open the boxes and to pour us some black coffee.
“Smooth as ever, Bailey,” I muse, hearing him chuckle behind me as he helps me set the table. “How are you feeling about tonight?” I ask, hoping we can change the subject, in desperate need of a distraction.
“I’m okay,” he replies. “It’s a bit mind-blowing to realize this is actually happening, but I feel like I’m in the right place, you know? It’s different to work by myself. And it does help that I already have clients, so it doesn’t feel like I’m starting anew.”
I nod, sitting across from him at the table and grabbing a donut covered with a white layer of sugar from the box. “Before I forget,” I begin, taking a bite from the donut, tasting its delicious flavor spreading across my tongue and mouth, “Poppy wanted me to ask you if you could give her an exclusive for the paper.”
“Of course.” Spencer nods, taking a sip from his coffee and picking out what to eat first. He decides on a croissant, spreading some butter on it before shoving half of it inside his mouth.
“Thanks. She will be very grateful. I’m sure she’ll also ask you to introduce her to one of the guys from that band Glitch, but you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to,” I tell him, biting back a smile, already knowing Poppy would kill me if she heard me saying this.
Spencer chuckles. “Noted.”
Breakfast goes by quicker than I expected, and soon enough, Spencer is saying goodbye to me, climbing into his car and heading toward the office. I promised him I’d get to the party earlier so I can help with some last-minute preparations, and also to be his sidekick with anything he needs during the event. With the amount of people coming tonight, I’m sure his head will be all over the place, so I’ll be there to take care of him.
