Chapter 35 “The Shadow That Knows My Name”

Chapter 35 “The Shadow That Knows My Name”

The moment Elera whispers, “It’s here,” something inside me snaps into place — a sharp, feral awareness that roars to life like claws scraping against stone.

I pull her closer, instinct overriding everything else. The storm outside thrums in my bones, answering the pulse of her mark, and though the room is warm, my breath fogs faintly in the air.

Something is wrong.
Very wrong.

“Elera,” I murmur, my lips brushing her temple, “tell me what you saw.”

She’s shaking. Not violently, but in that way that tells me she’s holding herself together by threads. Her hand clutches my shirt like she’s afraid I’ll disappear.

“It was in the veil,” she whispers. “A shadow. A voice. It followed me through… I thought I left it behind, but—”

Her voice cracks.

Liam moves closer, his expression stormy. “What exactly did it say to you?”

Elera’s lips part. “My name. Over and over. Like it was learning how to breathe through me.”

A cold chill slithers up my spine.

The queen inhales sharply. “This presence… does it possess form?”

Elera nods, but slowly. “Not a full one. It shifted. Like smoke wearing a face it wasn’t born with.”

Her gaze meets mine. There’s fear there, but something else too — guilt.

“I didn’t mean to bring it here.”

“You didn’t,” I say fiercely. “It followed you. That’s not the same.”

The Seer moves to the center of the room, her staff humming with old magic. “We mustn’t delay. If the entity crossed partially, it will seek a way to anchor itself.”

“To what?” Liam asks.

Her gaze flicks to Elera.
“To her.”

A growl rips from my chest before I can stop it. “Over my dead body.”

The Seer bows her head. “Let us hope it does not come to that, High Prince.”

But the look in her eyes tells me she’s not certain.

Lightning slices the sky again. The walls groan. The lamps flicker, shadows stretching unnaturally long across the marble floor.

Elera flinches.

“Enough,” I snap. “If it wants her, it’ll have to go through all of us.”

My mother steps forward, regal even in fear. “Mobilize the palace guard. Double the wards. Strengthen the perimeter. No one enters or leaves without authorization.”

Liam nods. “I’ll alert the sentries.”

But as he turns, Elera reaches for him.

Her voice is soft. “Liam… be careful.”

He freezes, caught off guard by the concern in her tone. His eyes soften — too much — and jealousy twists in my gut like a blade.

She doesn’t notice it.

But I do.

“Of course,” Liam murmurs, his voice gentler than it has any right to be. “I always am.”

He hesitates a moment longer, something unspoken flickering in his expression — longing, regret, an ache he can’t bury.

Then he leaves.

The moment the door shuts behind him, I turn back to Elera. “You shouldn’t talk to him like that.”

She blinks, exhausted. “Like what?”

“Like he still has a chance.”

Her breath catches, a blush flickering across her pale cheeks. “Aiden… I wasn’t—”

“I know,” I sigh, pressing my forehead to hers. “I just— I can’t lose you. Not now. Not after—”

She lifts her hand, brushing my cheek with trembling fingers. “You won’t.”

But her voice is fragile.
And the storm outside feels like a warning.

The Seer interrupts quietly. “Prince Aiden, we must move her.”

I stiffen. “Move her where?”

“To the inner sanctum. It is the only chamber shielded by the old magic — strong enough to obscure her presence.”

Elera’s eyes widen. “You think it’s searching for me already?”

“Yes,” the Seer says simply. “The moment you woke.”

A tremor goes through her body. I scoop her into my arms before she can protest. She’s too weak to stand, let alone walk, her limbs trembling with the weight of her own magic.

She gasps as I lift her. “Aiden…”

“I’ve got you.” My voice is a vow. “Always.”

The queen leads the way, the Seer following close behind. Thunder cracks again, shaking the corridor as we move through the palace.

Servants peek from doorways, fear etched across their faces. Guards stand stiff, shadows flickering unnaturally behind them — too close, too eager.

A presence presses against the wards. Faint but hungry.

The Seer hisses under her breath. “It grows stronger.”

Elera buries her face against my neck. “It knows I’m awake.”

I hold her tighter. “Then let it come. I’m not afraid.”

But I am.

For the first time since I was a child, I am terrified.

Because this isn’t a beast I can kill with claws or steel. This is ancient magic — the echo of a curse that tried to break our realm.

And it wants her.

We reach the inner sanctum — a circular room carved from obsidian stone, runes glowing faintly along the walls. The air is thick with protective enchantments.

I place Elera gently on the central bed, my hands lingering on her waist a moment longer than necessary.

She shivers. “It feels strange in here.”

“Safe,” I correct. “It feels safe.”

She meets my gaze, her eyes glowing faintly with lingering magic. “Aiden… what happens if it reaches me?”

My throat tightens. “It won’t.”

“But if it does—”

“I’ll burn the world before I let it touch you.”

Silence settles. Heavy. Charged.

Her breath trembles. “I heard it whisper something else… before I woke.”

My pulse stutters. “What?”

She closes her eyes, voice barely audible.

“He will lose you.”

Something primal rears in my chest.

“Never,” I snarl. “I’ll kill whatever it is—”

“Aiden.” She grabs my wrist weakly. “Listen.”

I force myself to breathe.

She opens her eyes again — gold swirling with fear and something darker. “It said your name. It knew who you were.”

The room seems to tilt.

“Knew me?”

Elera nods slowly. “It said you were the reason I couldn’t stay. That your heartbeat dragged me back… and it wanted to sever it.”

My own heartbeat stumbles.

The Seer goes pale. “A soul-bind. Ancient magic. It seeks to unravel the bond between you.”

Elera’s gaze darts to mine — terrified.

“Aiden… if it breaks the bond…”

I kneel beside her, cupping her face with both hands. “It won’t. Because I won’t let anything separate us. Not magic. Not fate. Not shadows. Nothing.”

Her breath hitches, eyes glistening.

“I believe you,” she whispers.

A soft tremor vibrates through the sanctum walls.

We all freeze.

The Seer turns sharply toward the doorway, eyes narrowing. “It has found the palace.”

My blood runs cold.

“And it is coming.”

The lamps extinguish at once.
The air drops to freezing.
And from somewhere within the shadows…

A voice whispers her name.

“Elera…”

Not quite human.
Not quite real.
But unmistakably close.

I stand between her and the darkness, shifting instinctively into the edge of my wolf-form — eyes burning gold, claws sprouting, every sense locked onto the threat.

“Stay behind me,” I growl.

Elera grips my hand.

“Aiden…”

“I’m here.” My voice is pure promise. “And I’m not letting you go.”

The shadow stirs.

And the true battle begins.
