Chapter 6 Her Pretense

Chapter 6 Her Pretense
SIENNA

“Wh… what!” I stuttered, my eyes widening. My colleagues shrugged their shoulders and sped off before Ethan could change his mind and send them instead, but I doubted he would be interested in anybody else. I mean… I was his ex-wife, his sworn enemy, and he would make sure I felt the heat, even though he was the one who cheated on me.

“Don’t make me repeat myself,” he husked.

My stomach churned with irritation. This coward was looking for someone to transfer his aggression to, and he chose me. If he were really a man, he should have challenged Mr. Lucian when he was talking. Unfortunately, I already had my own problem to face, and I wouldn’t allow him to use me to suppress his anger.

Scoffing, I rolled my eyes and snatched the document from him. I strolled out before I could lose my patience.

As I neared Lucian’s office, my steps slowed. A myriad of thoughts invaded my head. I was anxious, scared, and anticipatory. I asked myself questions I couldn’t answer. What if he recognizes me? What if he acknowledges me? What would be my reaction and response? Then what if everything turns into a horror and he decides to sack me to hide the secret from last night?

I stood in front of his office, gathering my thoughts. The best I could do at the moment was act like we never met… even if he insisted. Just maybe acting oblivious could save my job.

Clearing my throat, I let out a deep breath and knocked on the door. I opened it and strolled in afterward. He was talking to somebody when I walked in, like he was in a Zoom meeting. When he raised his head and locked eyes with me, I saw his lips twitch.

“I have to go now. You can tell Francis the remaining suggestions. He will surely pass them across to me. Let’s talk another day, please.” He said swiftly and ended the call immediately.

“This is the document you requested,” I mumbled, putting it on the table. I lowered my head so our eyes wouldn’t meet. Inwardly, I prayed he would let me go without probing. He shouldn’t remember me. Please, God.

“How is your hangover? I hope it isn’t strong,” he asked, opened his drawer, and brought out a small white paper bag. “You drank a lot last night, and you might end up with a fever if you don’t take a hangover drug.”

My lashes quivered, and my eyes darted between him and the paper bag he dropped in front of me. I expected everything but not this. He recognized me, and he wasn’t angry?

A half-smile formed on my lips. “Excuse me, sir. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

This was the best solution. Act like it never happened so it could stay hidden forever. The fact that he seemed nice didn’t mean he meant well. What if this was his way of confirming his suspicions?

“You don’t remember what happened last night?” he asked.

My heart skipped when he mentioned it last night. He shouldn’t go deeper—please.

“I…” I raised my head and widened my smile. “Am I supposed to remember something, sir? The last thing I can remember was sleeping at home after work.”

For seconds, he stared intently, like he was trying to read my mind with those eyes. Then he scoffed. “You aren’t a good actor. If you want to pretend, do it well.”

Fuck! He didn’t believe me, but I wasn’t ready to sell myself out. I would keep insisting until he stopped talking about it. Whatever happened last night was gone with it.

“I don’t understand you, sir. I’m sorry if you’re disappointed by my forgetfulness. I really do not remember anything, and I don’t think I want to.” I emphasized the last statement. He should just leave me the fuck alone and stop probing.

His lips parted, but before he could make a sound, I continued. “I have a lot of work on my table, sir. If you may excuse me…” I turned on my heels and started walking toward the door. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. If he made any sound, I could actually miscalculate my steps and slip. So he should please—

“Can you make me forget everything?” He fucking said something. He didn’t just say something; he repeated the statement I made. “I just want to replace these sad moments with happy memories only.”

My legs weakened and my body stiffened. The statement echoed in my head. I didn’t expect my new boss to be petty enough to mimic me. With my gaze on the door, I tightened my fists and pursed my lips. No matter what, I would not agree to what happened last night. It was better to bury things immediately.

Just when I raised my leg to continue my steps, I heard moans coming from him. “Oh my God! This is so good. Gosh! You are so fucking good,” he let out groans.

I knew what he was doing. He was mimicking my moans too. Fuck! I didn’t expect him to be this shameless. Without thinking, I turned and rushed to his side and swiftly blocked his mouth with my palm. I could afford everything but not making my colleagues misunderstand what was happening in the office.

“What are you doing? We are in the office, for goodness’ sake,” I snapped at him. He spoke against my palm, but I couldn’t hear anything. I had no choice but to release his mouth. “Do you want people to misunderstand what’s happening here?”

He didn’t respond. Instead, he held my wrist and pulled me closer so I towered over him, my boobs resting on his chest and our eyes locked. His cold hands held my waist.
