Chapter 220 THE QUIET HOUR

Chapter 220 THE QUIET HOUR
ELLE’S POV

The house had finally gone still.
Aria had fallen asleep sideways across her pillow, one arm flung out like she was still mid-argument with a dream. Luca had gone under more carefully, the way he always did, book closed and aligned on the nightstand, glasses folded on top of it. I had stood in the doorway of each room longer than necessary, the way I sometimes did when the day had been full and I needed to see them settled before I could settle myself.
Downstairs, the kitchen light was still on.
Kai was at the counter with two glasses and the last of the wine we had opened the night before and never finished. He looked up when he heard me on the stairs, and something in his face eased in the particular way it only eased for me.
“They’re out?”
“Completely.”
“Good.”
I crossed the kitchen and took the glass he held out. Our fingers touched. Neither of us moved away from it.
“Today was a good day,” he said.
“It was.”
“Daniel’s building. Aria and the windows. Luca asking about the journals.” He paused. “Maria already starting a new list before the coffee was gone.”
“She’s going to need a bigger notebook.”
He almost smiled. “She already has three.”
We stood there for a moment with the ordinary quiet of the house around us. The refrigerator humming. A car passing somewhere down the street. The particular peace that only arrived after the children were asleep and the work of the day had been set down, even if only for a few hours.
I set my glass on the counter and stepped into him.
He received me without hesitation, arms coming around me, chin resting against my hair. I pressed my face into the front of his shirt and breathed him in... soap, the faint clean smell of the day, the underlying warmth that was simply him.
“Elle.”
“Mm.”
“You’re thinking.”
“I’m always thinking.”
“You’re thinking about the second location. And the waiting list. And whether ninety days is still realistic.”
I lifted my head. “Am I that obvious?”
“Only to me.”
I reached up and touched his face, tracing the line of his jaw with my thumb. He turned into the touch, eyes closing for a second, and the smallness of the gesture undid something in my chest the way it always did. After everything... the years, the work, the children, the weight of what we had built and what we were still building... he still leaned into my hand like it was the first time.
“Come upstairs,” I said.
He opened his eyes. “Now?”
“Now.”
KAI’S POV
I followed her up the stairs.
The hallway was dim, lit only by the nightlight Aria still insisted on and the thin spill of moonlight from the window at the end. Elle walked ahead of me, and I watched the familiar shape of her shoulders, the way she moved when she was tired and still choosing me over sleep. At the door to our room she paused, looked back once, and then went inside.
I closed the door behind us.
She was already turning toward me. I met her in the middle of the room, hands finding her waist, mouth finding hers. The kiss started slow... the end-of-day kind, unhurried, grateful... and then deepened when she made a soft sound against my lips and stepped closer, eliminating the last of the space between us.
I walked her backward toward the bed without breaking the kiss. When the backs of her knees hit the mattress she sat, and I followed, bracing over her, still kissing her like we had all the time in the world and none of it at the same time.
“Kai.”
“I’m here.”
“I know.” She reached up and pushed her fingers into my hair. “I know you’re here.”
Something in the way she said it... quiet, certain, almost wondering... made my chest tighten. I kissed the corner of her mouth, then her jaw, then the place just below her ear that always made her breath catch.
“Tell me what you need.”
“You,” she said simply. “Just you. Without the day. Without the lists. Without any of it for a little while.”
“Done.”
ELLE’S POV
He undressed me slowly.
Not with urgency. With attention. The kind of attention that said he had been thinking about this somewhere underneath the conversations about buildings and waiting lists and south-facing windows. His hands were steady as he lifted my shirt over my head, as he unhooked my bra, as he eased my leggings down and set everything aside like it mattered where it landed.
I did the same for him.
When we were finally bare he stretched out over me, the weight of him familiar and necessary, and kissed me again, deeper this time. I opened for him without hesitation, legs settling around his hips, hands sliding down the long muscles of his back.
“I love you,” he said against my mouth.
“I know.”
“Say it back.”
I smiled into the next kiss. “I love you.”
He made a low sound that was almost a laugh and almost something else, and then he was moving down my body, mouth tracing a path from my throat to my collarbone to the soft curve of my breast. I arched into him when he closed his lips around my nipple, the pull of it sending heat straight through me. His hand found the other breast, thumb stroking slowly, and I had to bite back a sound so I would not wake the house.
“It’s all right,” he murmured. “They’re asleep.”
“Still.”
He lifted his head and looked at me, eyes dark, mouth curved. “Then I’ll be careful.”
He was not careful.
He was thorough.
His mouth moved lower, over my ribs, the soft plane of my stomach, the faint silver lines that pregnancy had left and that he had always touched like they were something worth reverencing. When he settled between my thighs I already knew I was wet for him, had been since the kitchen, since the first quiet look across the counter.
The first stroke of his tongue made my hips lift off the bed.
He held me steady and did it again, slower, deliberate, learning the exact pressure that made my breath fracture. I pushed my hands into his hair and held on, not guiding, just needing the contact. He licked into me like he had nowhere else to be, like the waiting list and the second location and the entire foundation could wait until he was finished making me come apart under his mouth.
“Kai...”
“I know.”
He slipped one finger inside me, then two, curling them in the exact way he had learned years ago and never forgotten. The dual sensation... tongue and fingers, pressure and heat... built fast. I tried to stay quiet and failed, a broken sound catching in my throat as the orgasm rolled through me in long, deep pulses.
He stayed with me through it, gentling only when I tugged at his hair, then pressing a soft kiss to the inside of my thigh before moving back up my body.
KAI’S POV
She was still trembling when I settled over her again.
I kissed her mouth and let her taste herself on my tongue. She made a small, hungry sound and wrapped her legs around me, heels pressing into the backs of my thighs.
“Inside,” she said. “Kai. Please.”
I reached down and guided myself into her in one slow, continuous push. The heat of her closed around me and my forehead dropped to her shoulder as I fought the urge to move too fast. She was tight, slick, perfect. She always was.
“All right?” I managed.
“Yes. Move. Please move.”
I did.
I started slow, long strokes that let me feel every inch of her, the way her body yielded and then tightened around me on every retreat. She met me with small lifts of her hips, hands sliding from my shoulders to my back to my hips, pulling me deeper. The bed made soft sounds beneath us. The house remained quiet. The whole world narrowed to the place where we were joined and the look on her face as she took me.
“Harder,” she whispered.
I gave her harder.
The rhythm changed, deeper, more insistent. She turned her face into the pillow to muffle the sounds she could no longer hold back, and I followed, kissing the side of her throat, the hinge of her jaw, the corner of her mouth when she turned back to me. Sweat gathered between us. Her nails dug lightly into my back. I could feel the second climax building in her by the way her breath shortened and her body started to tighten in that familiar, unmistakable way.
“Come with me,” I said against her ear. “Elle. Come with me.”
She did.
The orgasm took her in a full-body shudder, inner muscles clamping down around me so hard I had no choice but to follow. I buried myself deep and came with a low, rough sound against her neck, the pleasure sharp and complete and almost too much after the long, ordinary day that had somehow led us here.
We stayed like that for a long time after, breathing together, my weight braced on my forearms so I would not crush her, her hands stroking slowly up and down my spine.
ELLE’S POV
When he finally slipped free and rolled to the side, I went with him, curling into his chest. His arm came around me immediately. His other hand found mine and laced our fingers together against his stomach.
The room was quiet. The moonlight had shifted. Somewhere down the hall one of the twins made a small sleeping sound and then settled again.
“Still thinking?” he asked after a while, voice low and rough with residual heat.
“A little.”
“About the lists?”
“About this.” I turned my face into his shoulder. “About how we still find our way back to each other at the end of days like today. About how the work gets bigger and the children get older and the buildings keep rising, and somehow you still look at me across a kitchen like I’m the only thing in the room.”
He was quiet for a moment. Then he lifted our joined hands and kissed my knuckles.
“You are,” he said simply. “The lists matter. The buildings matter. The foundation matters. But you are the thing I come home to. You and the two people sleeping down the hall. Everything else is what we build around that.”
I felt my eyes sting and did not bother to hide it.
“I love you,” I said into his skin.
“I know.” He shifted so he could look at me properly. “I love you. I’m proud of you. And I’m not done choosing this. Any of it.”
I kissed him, slow and deep and grateful. When we separated he tucked my hair behind my ear with the same careful attention he had given my body twenty minutes earlier.
“Sleep,” he said.
“In a minute.”
“In a minute,” he agreed.
We lay there in the quiet hour between the day and whatever would come next, bodies cooling, hands still linked, the house holding us the way it always had. Outside, the city continued. Inside, there was only this... the two of us, the children down the hall, the work waiting patiently for morning, and the particular peace of a love that had survived enough to know exactly what it was worth.
I closed my eyes against his shoulder and let the last of the day leave me.
He was still awake when I drifted off, his thumb moving slowly across the back of my hand, a quiet, steady rhythm that said I’m here without needing any other words.
