Chapter 36 Thirty Six
AMELIA XAVIER
The streets of Paris looked rather pleasant, the street lights and the well lit restaurants lined up like an endless tail of a serpent. Stars dotted the sky as the crescent moon tried its best at bringing light to the already lit roads.
Paris had so much life.
I walked down the street admiring the modest but extravagant lifestyle of these people, and not to lie, the fashion was on a whole different level. I switched on my phone to check the time.
10:01pm
Sighing, I decided it was time to head back to my hotel since father thought it was best I stayed in a small room and avoided the big places. I didn't complain. Walking down the road, I noticed how peaceful life here felt or that was how normal people saw it to be — if I were here, then danger lurked by waiting to strike at any moment.
I gulped at the thought of causing trouble and suddenly the feeling of home sickness overtook me.
“I've done it before. I can do it again,” I muttered, assuring myself and trying to shake off that nauseous feeling suffocating me and eating at my insides… .
Home
I slumped on the bed, my legs sprawled in different directions as I shut my eyes, but nothing was forthcoming. No sleep. Nothing
switching on the TV, I thought it was best to focus on the news, after all, information was power — is.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME FORMER XAVIER, KAYLA WOULD SHOW HERSELF TO THE PUBLIC AFTER SO MANY YEARS AT THE ERIN BALL PARTY…
With a speed surpassing any limit I had pushed through, I sat up, my eyes fixed on the TV screen. The news wasn't just captivating, but this was my chance of showing myself to the world, of being worthy of father's business.
I took my phone and dialled a certain number, half praying he would answer the phone.
“Oh, little miss Xavier!”
Thank God.
“Yes. Yes, Immanuel. Can you help me find out where the Erin ball party is?” I asked eagerly, waiting for an answer. “Hold on a minute, beauty.” After some time, he came back on line. “Oh, it's not too far away from here, young lady. I'll send you the directions…”
“Thank you,” I said, not waiting for him to complete his statement and hung up.
Paris was really promising. I smiled standing up from the bed to go take a shower.
“I'm coming for you Kayla.”
OWEN WINTERS
Home sweet home.
What a sour lie. I scoffed going to the kitchen to make coffee. The first thing I get when I return home is an invitation to a certain party. The Erin ball party was quite exceptional especially when former Xavier, Kayla had made a comeback in the crime industry.
After the death of Lucian Xavier, the former house of Xavier closed down completely and to the surprise of everyone, Kayla who got married to the bratva did nothing about it. “What a pitiful story,” I muttered, dropping the coffee mug to go have a cold shower.
Dragging my feet towards the shower, I undressed entering the bathroom and letting water pour down my back. I watched the way the water droplets rolled off my body sliding down to the floor… .
Xavier.
That strange feeling I had been hiding from crawled back in, I wanted it off me, but it held on tight. “Fuck this!”
Punch.
I threw my fist on the bathroom wall, but that feeling wasn't ready to wear off, so I let it take me.
Amy…
“She would have moved on with her life now, I don't need her,” I convinced myself knowing fully well what a dry lie that was. I wanted to see her even if it were for the last time.
Maybe I should really go to this party.
I thought, leaving the bathroom, a towel strapped around my waist.
This should be fun.
AMELIA XAVIER
“What the fuck do you mean invites only?” I asked, irritated by the words of the security standing guard at the entrance.
“I'm sorry ma'am, the lady, Kayla said it should be…”
“Do you know who you should fear more, douchebag? Fucking me!” I was already fed up by their calmness.
I actually knew about the invites only, because that's how it had always been in this world, but knowing this could be my only chance to negotiate with this woman, I needed to try. Nothing was going to stop me from getting into that party — by any means necessary.
“Ma'am I might want to ask you to leave, or I'd…” I didn't wait till he finished his statement before I spoke, that was how desperate I was. “Do what? Call the freaking police. What an awful idea, gentleman…” I let my voice trail as something sinister creeped into my mind.
Father always said that the way to a man's mind is through manipulation and when one has learnt such beautiful art, he could do anything he wanted with the human mind. He could break it, make it, fix it and sometimes tame it like a pet. A devious smile creeped its way to my lips.
“I'll leave, but I'll not forget to remind the Xavier's of your good deeds,” I said ironically, turning to walk away.
I halted while they discussed in low voices, they suddenly recognized who they were dealing with.
“Isn't she the daughter of Dylan Xavier?” One asked in a shaky voice making a very bad attempt at being calm. “Yes… yes, let's have her in, I'm just newly ma…”
“Very well, can I come in?” I said aloud cutting him off his words. They nodded letting me through. People could be so vulnerable.
The party looked normal; deals being made, contracts signed, wine, spirit… more wine. This wasn't my type of thing, but I needed to learn if I had the intention of taking over daddy's business. I was in great spirits.
“Today might be my lucky day,” I muttered to myself.
Welcome to Paris.
