CHAPTER 139
I WANT A HEALER'S VERIFICATION OR THIS CHILD IS A BASTARD!
DORIAN
A knock sounded against my door.
I had only just gotten in. My shoulders still carried the weight of the day and all I wanted was quiet. I groaned and stayed leaning against the bed post. Whoever it was would realise I was not answering and leave.
The knock came again. Harder this time and persistent.
I groaned louder. My voice came out rough. “Who is it? Just come in.”
The door opened and Selina walked in.
Irritation flared hot in my chest at once. I hissed under my breath and let out a long sigh. My fingers tightened against the bed post. “Can you not leave me alone for one day? Must you always show up like an annoying pest?”
She flinched. Her eyes flicked back toward the door as if she was already thinking of walking out. The hesitation only sharpened my impatience.
I exhaled hard through my nose. The air in the room felt warmer than it should. “Come in and say whatever you came to say.”
She pressed her lips together tightly. Her fingers clutched at each other in front of her until the knuckles turned pale. She stayed near the middle of the room. “I need to discuss something with you. No matter what, do not get pissed off.”
I narrowed my eyes. The mattress creaked under me as I shifted my weight. “What is it now?”
She looked straight at me. Her voice stayed steady even though her hands kept twisting against each other. “I just discovered I am pregnant.”
For a second the words did not land. Then a wide smile pulled at my mouth. I leaned up from the bed post, some of the irritation easing. “That is good news. Finally you will be responsible now that some man has put a baby inside you.”
The look that crossed her face was sharp. She stared at me as if I had struck her. My smile faded. I furrowed my brows and sat up straighter. The room suddenly felt quieter.
“What is wrong with you?” I questioned furrowing my brows at her.
She swallowed. Her throat moved visibly. “The pregnancy is for you.”
I looked at her face carefully. Part of me waited for the joke to show itself. Her expression stayed serious. No smile. No twitch that gave anything away. The silence stretched. My pulse started to pick up for no clear reason.
Then I could not help it. A short laugh broke out of me. It turned into a full fit of laughter that left my chest shaking. I pointed a finger at her. “You are hilarious. You should take a job as a comedian.”
Selina did not laugh with me. Her jaw tightened. “I am not joking. I am pregnant for you.”
I chuckled again, shaking my head. The idea was so absurd it kept pulling more laughter out of me. “If you are trying to prank me, it is not going to work.”
She shook her head hard. Her voice rose a little. “I am not pranking you. I am pregnant.”
She stepped closer. The floorboard under her foot gave a soft creak. She held out a small plastic stick. I took it from her hand. The plastic felt cool and slightly damp against my fingers. I looked down at the result window.
Two clear lines.
She was pregnant.
The laughter drained out of me all at once. My stomach dropped. I stared at the test for another second, then a third, as if the lines might change if I looked long enough. My mouth went dry. I lifted my eyes back to her face. The room felt tighter than it had a moment ago.
“How can you be pregnant for me?”
Selina frowned. Her shoulders pulled back. When she spoke her voice came firm and steady. “You are the father of my child. It happened on the night of Charlotte’s induction.”
My pulse jumped hard against my ribs. That night sat in my memory like a blurred stretch of noise and alcohol. I could not pull a clear picture of the end of it. I kept my eyes on her.
My grip on the test tightened until the plastic edges dug into my palm. “How did it happen?”
She drew a short breath. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides. “The bar ran all night. The alcohol was unlimited. You drank heavily. The night ended in a brief, meaningless one-night encounter with me. Since then I have not seen my period. It has resulted in the foetus I am carrying.”
The words landed one after another. Each one hit with a dull weight. My chest felt tight. I could hear my own breathing in the quiet room.
The test still sat in my hand, the two lines clear and unchanged. I stared at her face, searching for any crack that would show this was a lie.
Nothing showed.
I did not believe her.
The claim sat in the air between us and I rejected it at once. I remembered that night. Not every detail after the drinking grew heavy, but enough to remember I was careful.
I remembered the herbal contraceptive compound pack men used because it was highly reliable. I had taken it. Even drunk to stupor, I had been careful not to have unprotected sex that would lead to pregnancy.
I also remembered the morning after. I had woken and found Selina still in my bed. I had told her clearly that the night meant nothing. I had told her she was not to speak of it again.
Now she stood in front of me with a pregnancy test and a story that did not match what I knew.
I looked at her. Her heart was racing. I could hear the rapid beat from where I sat. She fidgeted on the spot. Her legs kept shifting, drumming a restless pace against the floorboards. The movement gave her away. She was nervous. Which meant she was lying.
The timing was too convenient. She had already been pregnant when we met that night. The child belonged to another pack member. She had simply decided to put the responsibility on me.
Selina shifted from foot to foot. Her voice came sharp. “Say something. Stop staring at me like I committed murder.”
I looked up at her. My jaw tightened. “Of course you have committed murder.”
She stared back at me, her expression cool. The silence stretched for a moment.
I shook my head once. The plastic test still rested in my hand. I set it down on the bedside table with a soft click. “The herbal compound makes pregnancy impossible. I used it the night we had sex.”
Her face changed. Tears rose fast. She wiped at her eyes with the back of one hand, but more followed. Her voice cracked. “You know you didn't use anything. You are trying to deny the child. That is not fair.”
Anger stirred low in my chest. I kept my tone flat. “I am not trying to deny anything. And I cannot just accept something that is not mine.”
She took a step closer. Her shoulders pulled back. Offense flashed across her face. “The baby inside me is not something. You are the father of this child. Do not try to deny it.”
I stayed seated. My hands rested on my knees. The room felt warmer than before. I could still hear her rapid heartbeat and the soft sound of her uneven breathing. Part of me waited for her to break and admit the truth. She did not.
My mind kept returning to the same facts. I had taken the compound. I had been careful. The morning after I had made the boundary clear. None of this matched the story she was pushing now.
I met her eyes directly and said firmly, “The baby is not mine.”
Selina’s voice rose as she stared at me. “The baby is yours.”
I shook my head again. I didn't have the strength to argue with Selina. And it seems she came really prepared for that. Arguing would only make her stay longer in my room and I didn't want that.
But then something crawled into my mind. The decision settled firmly in my chest. “If that is the case, then I demand a healer’s verification. The healer will confirm whether the pregnancy is truly mine before I accept anything. If you cannot provide that, then forget about me fathering a bastard.”
