Chapter Eighty-Five: The Hunter in the Shadows

Chapter Eighty-Five: The Hunter in the Shadows
The first warning came just after sunset.

Marcus was reviewing Margaret Ellis’ handwritten journal inside their hotel suite when his phone buzzed.

The screen displayed a single notification from one of Haywood Security’s surveillance analysts.

URGENT.

He opened the attached image.

A grainy photograph.

A black SUV.

Same vehicle.

Three different locations.

Airport.

Gas station.

Hotel parking lot.

Marcus’ blood ran cold.

He stood abruptly.

“Oliver.”

Oliver looked up from the legal files spread across the dining table.

“What is it?”

Marcus handed him the phone.

“We’re being followed.”

Oliver studied the photographs carefully.

The SUV maintained nearly the same distance in every image.

Professional.

Deliberate.

Not random.

Marcus continued.

“Our security team only noticed because one of the airport cameras captured the license plate.”

“And?”

“The plates are fake.”

Oliver’s jaw tightened.

“They know we have Margaret.”

Marcus nodded.

“I think they’ve known since we left New York.”

Oliver immediately reached for his jacket.

“We’re moving her.”

Miles away…

Margaret Ellis had just finished locking her front door.

The old woman sighed heavily as she looked toward the sea.

For the first time in years…

She felt lighter.

The truth was finally leaving her shoulders.

She walked into her kitchen to prepare dinner.

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then…

Darkness.

Margaret frowned.

“Power outage?”

She searched for a flashlight.

Outside…

A figure emerged from the shadows.

Dressed entirely in black.

Gloved hands.

A baseball cap pulled low.

He approached the back entrance with practiced silence.

One movement.

A slim metal tool slid into the lock.

Click.

The door opened.

Oliver’s convoy sped toward the cottage.

Rain pounded against the windshield.

Marcus kept calling Margaret.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Oliver accelerated.

“Call local police.”

“They’re already on their way.”

“Too slow.”

Inside the cottage…

Margaret finally located the flashlight.

The narrow beam cut through the darkness.

She headed toward the electrical panel.

Halfway down the hallway…

She heard it.

A floorboard creaked.

She froze.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then another step.

Closer.

Margaret’s breathing quickened.

“I’ve called the police.”

A lie.

She hadn’t.

The flashlight trembled in her hands.

The beam caught a shadow moving across the living room.

Someone was inside.

She backed away slowly.

The figure stepped into view.

A man.

Tall.

Face hidden beneath a black mask.

His voice was calm.

“Mrs. Ellis.”

She recognized nothing about him.

“I only want the journal.”

“It’s gone.”

“I know.”

He took another step.

“So are you.”

Margaret’s heartbeat thundered.

She turned…

and ran.

The elderly woman dashed through the hallway toward the front door.

The intruder followed.

Not hurried.

Confident.

As though he knew she couldn’t outrun him.

Margaret reached the handle.

Locked.

Her shaking fingers fumbled.

Behind her…

Footsteps.

Closer.

Closer.

Then…

CRASH!

The front window exploded.

Margaret screamed.

Not because someone came through it.

Because headlights flooded the room.

Oliver.

His SUV had driven straight through the front gate.

Marcus jumped out before the vehicle had fully stopped.

“Margaret!”

The masked man cursed quietly.

He hadn’t expected them so quickly.

He darted toward the back exit.

Oliver burst through the shattered doorway.

“Stop!”

The intruder disappeared into the rain.

Marcus reached Margaret first.

“Are you hurt?”

She could barely breathe.

“He wanted…”

She pointed weakly.

“…the journal.”

Oliver immediately sprinted after the fleeing man.

The forest behind the cottage was soaked.

Branches whipped against Oliver’s face.

The stranger moved with military precision.

Never slipping.

Never hesitating.

Oliver gained ground.

Only a few more meters…

The man suddenly threw something.

Oliver instinctively ducked.

Smoke exploded around him.

Visibility vanished.

He coughed violently.

By the time the smoke cleared…

The forest was empty.

Only fresh tire tracks remained.

The SUV was gone.

Oliver clenched his fists.

“Damn it.”

Back inside the cottage…

Police officers filled every room.

Forensic photographers documented the forced entry.

Fingerprint specialists dusted every surface.

Marcus sat beside Margaret.

“You were lucky.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She looked toward Oliver.

“I think Richard planned for this.”

Oliver frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Nine years ago…”

“He told me something.”

Everyone listened.

“He said…”

Her voice trembled.

“‘Loose ends don’t stay loose forever.’”

Silence settled over the room.

Marcus slowly stood.

“This wasn’t a random attack.”

Oliver nodded.

“It was organized.”

Marcus added quietly,

“Which means someone has been protecting Richard’s secrets even after his death.”

Back in New York…

Nuella couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

She sat alone inside Oliver’s penthouse.

The silence felt heavier than usual.

Sophia had stayed behind after their conversation.

Neither woman wanted to be alone.

Sophia glanced toward the television.

Breaking News flashed across every channel.

Attempted break-in at Maine residence connected to Haywood investigation.

Nuella’s heart stopped.

She grabbed the remote.

The report showed police vehicles outside Margaret’s cottage.

No names.

No details.

Only speculation.

Nuella immediately called Oliver.

Straight to voicemail.

She called again.

Nothing.

Sophia watched the fear spread across Nuella’s face.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

Nuella whispered.

“I just know something’s wrong.”

An hour later…

Oliver finally called back.

“I’m okay.”

Nuella exhaled so deeply she nearly cried.

“You scared me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What happened?”

Oliver looked toward Margaret, now wrapped in a blanket while detectives continued questioning her.

“Someone tried to kill our witness.”

Nuella closed her eyes.

“My God…”

“They failed.”

“Is Margaret alright?”

“Shaken.”

“But alive.”

Nuella leaned against the kitchen counter.

“What does this mean?”

Oliver answered quietly.

“It means we’re closer than we thought.”

Across the city…

Inside an abandoned warehouse…

The masked intruder stood before a man seated in darkness.

Only the glow of a cigar illuminated the room.

“You failed.”

The intruder lowered his head.

“They arrived earlier than expected.”

Silence.

Then,

The older man stood.

Expensively dressed.

Silver-haired.

His face remained hidden.

“You’ve disappointed me.”

“I can fix it.”

“You won’t.”

The man extinguished his cigar.

“The witness is no longer our biggest problem.”

The intruder frowned.

“What is?”

The older man smiled faintly.

“Oliver Haywood.”

“He isn’t asking the questions I expected.”

“He’s asking better ones.”

The masked man hesitated.

“What do we do now?”

The older man’s voice became ice.

“If we can’t erase the evidence…”

“We destroy the family.”

The following morning…

Marcus assembled everyone inside the temporary operations room.

Oliver.

Margaret.

Two FBI consultants.

Three attorneys.

The journal lay sealed inside an evidence bag.

Marcus placed another folder beside it.

“We’ve identified the SUV.”

Oliver looked up.

“I thought the plates were fake.”

“They were.”

“But one traffic camera caught the driver’s face before he switched vehicles.”

Marcus projected the image onto the screen.

The room fell silent.

Margaret gasped.

“No…”

Oliver stared at the photograph.

The man’s face was older now.

Scar across one cheek.

Gray beginning to creep into his beard.

But there was no mistaking him.

Margaret whispered,

“I know him.”

Marcus turned.

“Who is he?”

She swallowed hard.

“He wasn’t Richard’s employee.”

“He was…”

Her voice cracked.

“…Richard Haywood’s personal fixer.”

Oliver frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked directly at him.

“It means every secret your father ever buried…”

“…this man helped bury it.”

Oliver felt a chill crawl down his spine.

If Richard had employed someone whose sole purpose was to clean up scandals…

Then the forged marriage…

The bribery…

The threats…

They were only the beginning.

Marcus slowly closed the folder.

“I think we’ve just found the man who’s been protecting Richard’s empire of lies.”

Oliver stared at the photograph one last time.

For the first time…

His enemy had a face.

And somewhere across the country…

That same man was already planning his next move.
