Chapter 148

Chapter 148
Truths and Triggers

Claire sat at the breakfast table, barely tasting the toast in her mouth. Across from her, Adrian was silent, scanning through the latest updates from their private security team. His eyes flicked over encrypted messages, his jaw tense. Even in his usual sharp black shirt and slacks, he looked like a man at war—with everyone, including himself.

She set her coffee down, watching him. “You haven’t said a word since the call.”

His fingers stilled over the screen. “That’s because I’m trying not to say the wrong one.”

Claire raised an eyebrow. “Since when do you care about that?”

He looked up, his eyes darker than usual. “Since someone threatened the woman I—” He caught himself and exhaled, standing abruptly. “Since someone dared threaten you.”

Claire pushed back her chair, following him as he moved to the window overlooking the estate grounds.

“They’re desperate, Adrian. If Douglas is calling me directly, that means we’ve shaken something loose.”

“And it means they’re watching us closer than ever,” he said, without turning around. “That warehouse was probably a decoy. Something they planted years ago, just in case.”

“No,” Claire said firmly. “There was too much there. Too much risk. They didn’t expect us to find it—and they sure as hell didn’t expect me to leak it.”

Adrian turned to face her then. “Do you understand what you’ve done? You didn’t just start a media fire. You set off an avalanche. The vultures are circling now—and they won’t stop until they’ve feasted on blood. Ours or theirs.”

“Good,” Claire replied, stepping closer. “Let them come.”

Frances Lin Goes Live

By noon, the world had changed.

Frances Lin’s exposé hit like a thunderclap. A special live broadcast, titled “The Price of Power: Calderon’s Secret Trials,” aired on major networks and flooded every media outlet within minutes. She presented the evidence with ruthless clarity—documents showing off-the-books medical trials, bribes to silence victims, and links to shell corporations tied to Malcolm Donovan.

Though no names were spoken explicitly, those in the know recognized the veiled accusations.

And so did Gavin.

Claire and Adrian watched the segment from his study, Daniel standing in the corner, expression unreadable.

“This is just the beginning,” Adrian said. “The real storm comes when Frances gets her hands on the donor records.”

Claire nodded. “And Gavin knows it.”

Not ten minutes later, Adrian’s burner phone rang.

“It’s him,” he said, answering. “Gavin.”

Claire’s heart kicked up.

“Blackwood,” Gavin’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with venom. “I underestimated you.”

“I’m flattered,” Adrian said coolly. “Though I can’t say the same about you.”

“You think leaking that bullshit changes anything?”

“I think it’s the first of many changes.”

A pause. Then Gavin’s voice dropped, threatening and smooth. “She was always just a pawn, you know. Claire. Used her up and discarded her. The way it’s done in this world.”

Adrian’s entire body tensed.

“I’ve made mistakes,” he said, “but I never discarded her. And I sure as hell never used her. That was your legacy. You and Malcolm.”

Another pause. This time, colder.

“Be careful, Adrian. When men like us start playing savior, we tend to die heroes—or fools.”

The line went dead.

The Offer

That afternoon, Cassandra showed up at Blackwood Estate.

Claire nearly turned her away at the door, but curiosity—and a lingering need to understand Adrian’s past—made her pause.

Cassandra stood in the foyer, her hair swept into an immaculate chignon, wearing designer armor and the smile of someone who’d seen the apocalypse and survived.

“I didn’t come to fight,” she said. “I came to warn you.”

Claire crossed her arms. “You really expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to listen.” Cassandra stepped inside, eyes flicking over the security cameras. “Your exposé stirred more than a few skeletons. The men behind Calderon? They’re not going to fight back with lawsuits and press conferences. They’ll come for your son.”

Claire froze. “What?”

“They’ll go after whatever leverage they can find. And if they can’t discredit you, they’ll threaten what matters most.”

Claire’s mind flashed with visions of Noah. His tiny hands. His innocent laugh. She stepped forward, all pretense gone. “If anything happens to him—”

“Then it’s too late,” Cassandra said simply. “Which is why I came.”

Claire narrowed her eyes. “You want something.”

“I want the same thing you do,” Cassandra said. “To destroy Gavin and every man behind Calderon. But I can’t do it without Adrian’s help. He’s the only one with the reach. The resources. The fury.”

Claire was quiet. “And what’s your price?”

Cassandra met her gaze, eyes steel-sharp. “Nothing. Except that you trust me enough to let me help.”

A Mother’s Fury

That night, Claire couldn’t sleep. The image of Noah—taken, hurt, used as leverage—haunted her.

She slipped out of bed, wandered into the nursery. He was there, curled under his superhero blanket, thumb tucked near his cheek.

She crouched beside him, brushing a hand over his soft curls.

“I promised you safety,” she whispered. “And I won’t break that promise. Not again.”

Behind her, Adrian’s presence was silent but certain. He didn’t say a word, just crouched beside her, wrapping an arm around her back.

“They won’t get to him,” he said.

“I know,” Claire murmured. “Because if they try… I’ll become the very monster they fear.”

Adrian pressed a kiss to her temple. “Then we’ll become monsters together.”

The Plan

By morning, they had a new objective: Cut the head off the snake.

Claire, Adrian, Daniel, and—begrudgingly—Cassandra formed an uneasy alliance. Their strategy was twofold:

Expose Gavin through financial and medical records Frances could distribute globally, and simultaneously dismantle Calderon’s infrastructure with insider information Cassandra still had from her engagement days to one of their major donors.

Claire handled the outreach to victims’ families and advocacy groups. Adrian funded everything, pulling strings in the media, politics, and tech. Cassandra mapped the network’s weakest links.

And Daniel?

He gathered a team.

“Once this goes live,” he warned them all, “they’ll try to erase anyone who helped you. Be ready to run or fight.”

Claire looked at Adrian. “We fight.”

Adrian nodded. “We end this.”
