Chapter 142

The Trap Within the Trap

Rain lashed against the windows of the Blackwood penthouse, thick sheets blurring the skyline as Adrian stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass. His reflection stared back—jaw clenched, mind spiraling. The night had ended in veiled threats and quiet revelations, but the morning brought something worse:

Uncertainty.

Gavin Thorn had made his entrance, delivering no outright attack but leaving behind the unmistakable scent of war. And now, the waiting began—the most dangerous part of any battle.

Claire emerged from the hallway, dressed in a silk blouse and black slacks, eyes sharp, hair pulled into a high twist. She was already on edge. She hadn’t slept. Neither had Adrian.

“He’s not going to sit still,” she said, coming to stand beside him.

Adrian didn’t look at her. “No. He’s going to bait us.”

“Well, good,” Claire replied. “Because I’m done waiting. I want to strike first.”

At that, he finally turned to face her. “It’s not that simple. He’s calculated. Everything last night was a performance. He wanted us to see him. He let us see him.”

Claire narrowed her eyes. “So what? We wait until he ruins our lives? Until he leaks something to the press or poisons our allies?”

Adrian’s voice dropped. “He’s already started.”

He handed her a tablet. The screen showed a financial report—stock fluctuations, anonymous blog posts, a suspicious uptick in social media traffic centered around a conspiracy hashtag tying Adrian to insider trading.

Claire skimmed the report, her lips parting. “He’s building a narrative.”

Adrian nodded grimly. “A digital noose.”

Framing the Fall

Daniel entered the room with a grim expression. “We traced some of the anonymous sources. They’re ghost accounts—untraceable. But one of the digital fingerprints matches a PR firm based in Zurich. Guess who bought them out last year?”

Claire’s stomach dropped. “Gavin.”

Adrian crossed his arms. “He’s not just targeting us financially. He’s crafting a downfall that looks earned. And once the public believes we’re corrupt, nothing we say will matter.”

Claire let out a long breath. “We have to expose him before he exposes us.”

Daniel hesitated, then added, “There’s more. He’s been in contact with Cassandra.”

That name landed like a thunderclap.

Claire’s spine straightened. “Cassandra? Your ex-fiancée?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “She’s always had a taste for chaos.”

“She was the one who tried to frame me for leaking the Blackwood acquisition files,” Claire said coldly.

“Exactly,” Adrian murmured. “Now she has a new partner.”

Claire’s voice turned icy. “Then let’s tear them both down.”

The Alliance We Never Wanted

Claire’s plan was bold, fast, and laced with risk.

They reached out to an unexpected source—Sebastian Drake, former rival of Adrian, turned reluctant ally after a hostile takeover attempt had nearly ruined them both years ago. Drake owed Adrian a favor—a very big one—and it was time to collect.

Drake agreed to a secret meeting in a discreet villa outside the city.

As Adrian drove them through winding forest roads, Claire watched him silently. His face was set in grim concentration, his hands steady on the wheel. But she saw the tension in his shoulders, the shadows under his eyes.

“You don’t have to protect me from everything,” she said softly.

“I’m not protecting you,” he said without looking at her. “I’m fighting beside you.”

She smiled faintly. “That’s new.”

He glanced at her. “You changed me.”

“And Gavin wants to unmake you.”

“He’ll try.”

The Informant

Sebastian Drake was waiting when they arrived—leaning against the stone balcony of the villa, drink in hand, his tailored suit crisp despite the mountain air. He greeted Adrian with a nod and Claire with a thin smile.

“You must be the infamous Mrs. Blackwood.”

Claire arched an eyebrow. “Only infamous to those who deserve it.”

Drake chuckled. “Fair. Come inside.”

The villa was cozy but fortified—security cameras at every angle, a hidden safe behind a painting, encrypted servers humming behind a locked door. Drake didn’t take risks anymore.

Once inside, he got to the point.

“Gavin reached out to me two weeks ago,” he said, pouring whiskey. “Tried to convince me to back a public campaign accusing Blackwood Enterprises of laundering money through overseas subsidiaries.”

Claire blinked. “That’s... absurd.”

“But believable,” Adrian added. “He’s not trying to prove anything. He’s trying to start a fire big enough that we can’t contain it.”

Drake nodded. “Exactly. But I told him no. Not because I like you, Blackwood—but because I hate being used. I don’t like puppeteers pulling strings in the dark.”

Claire leaned forward. “Do you have proof of his approach?”

Drake smiled. “I recorded everything.”

Baiting the Enemy

With the recording secured, they crafted a plan.

Claire would release a statement—a bold PR move, calling attention to recent attacks on her reputation, daring the unnamed “shadow” to come forward with proof. It would be risky. The media would salivate. Gavin would feel cornered.

And when he tried to discredit her...

They’d release the recording.

They’d also simultaneously file a legal injunction and alert the SEC to investigate Gavin’s new holdings—flagging his shell companies and financial anomalies. It wouldn’t destroy him immediately, but it would stall him. And every delay was leverage.

Claire, sitting across from Adrian in the study that night, watched him work in silence. There was something almost beautiful about the way he fought—not with chaos, but with precision. Every move was calculated. Every step meant to protect her, protect them.

“You know,” she said gently, “when I first met you, I thought you were the coldest man I’d ever known.”

“And now?” he asked without looking up.

“Now I know you just had no one worth melting for.”

He glanced at her, eyes softer than she’d seen them in days. “You are my thaw, Claire.”

Live by the Flame, Burn by the Fire

The statement went live the next morning.

Claire appeared on a news segment—poised, eloquent, dressed in navy. She spoke of resilience, of power reclaimed, of the dangers of manipulation in high places.

Her final words rang clear:

“Let this be a message: I will not be silenced by shadows. I invite the truth—because I have nothing to hide.”

The segment went viral within hours.

And just as expected, Gavin bit the bait.

That evening, a blog post surfaced—complete with fabricated bank transfers and emails “leaked” from an anonymous whistleblower. Cassandra’s fingerprints were all over it.

And then came the real attack—a press conference by a supposed ex-employee claiming Claire and Adrian funneled money through a fake charity.

It was vicious. Unfounded. But the timing was brutal.

That’s when Adrian released the recording.

Gavin’s voice, clear and smug, echoed through the media like a confession. The timing, the manipulation, the names dropped—all of it pointed back to him.

The public turned. Fast.

And Claire? She stood tall.

The First Crack

Late that night, as the news dissected every second of Gavin’s downfall, Claire sat with Adrian on the rooftop garden. The air was cold, but she didn’t shiver.

Adrian poured them both a glass of wine.

“To surviving shadows,” he said.

She touched her glass to his. “To burning them down.”

But she knew—it wasn’t over.

Gavin Thorn had shown his face, but men like him didn’t go down with one strike.

He’d be back.

And when he came, she’d be ready.
