Chapter 140

Enemies in the Shadows

The letter haunted Claire.

She read it a dozen times over the next few hours, committing every line to memory, every curve of the penmanship, every chilling implication. The words were more than just a warning—they were a declaration. A threat from someone who clearly believed they had unfinished business with her.

And worse, they knew how to find her.

When morning broke over the city, casting pale light over the marble floors of the penthouse, Claire stood by the window, sleepless and tense. The shadows on the street below seemed to stretch longer than usual. Every face passing by felt like a spy. Every glance felt like a dagger waiting to strike.

She barely noticed when Adrian approached.

"You've been up all night," he said gently, slipping his arm around her waist.

She leaned into him, but her thoughts remained elsewhere. "I can’t stop thinking about the letter."

“I know,” he said. “I’ve already had Daniel run forensics on it. No prints, no traceable ink. Whoever sent it knew what they were doing.”

Claire’s heart sank. “So, it’s not Victor?”

Adrian hesitated. “No. His communication style is... louder. Cruder. This is someone else. Someone more methodical.”

“Cassandra?” Claire suggested, though even she didn’t sound convinced.

“She’s manipulative, but she wouldn’t send veiled threats in envelopes. She prefers to deal damage in public. This is someone operating from the shadows.”

Claire turned to him fully, brows furrowed. “Then who?”

Adrian’s jaw tensed. “That’s what we’re going to find out.”

The First Piece of the Puzzle

Later that day, Daniel returned with a thin folder in his hand and a furrow in his brow. “I think I might have found something,” he said as he joined Adrian and Claire in the study.

He opened the folder and pulled out a single black-and-white photograph.

Claire’s breath hitched.

It was a picture of her and her mother—taken years ago, before the betrayal, before the prison, before everything fell apart. They were seated in the garden of their old estate, both smiling, the summer sun casting golden halos around their faces.

“Where did this come from?” she asked, her voice cracking.

“It was mailed to one of Blackwood’s dummy corporations—along with a second note,” Daniel explained, handing her a smaller slip of paper.

This time, the handwriting was sharper, more forceful.

“You were never meant to rise.

The sins of your mother will be repaid through you.

I haven’t forgotten what she stole.”

Claire’s fingers went numb.

Adrian stepped in immediately, his hand on her back. “What does that mean, Claire? What did your mother steal?”

Claire shook her head slowly. “I don’t know. My mother was... complicated. She had secrets. But if someone’s coming after me because of her, it means this has nothing to do with Liam. Or even Victor.”

Adrian’s expression darkened. “This goes deeper.”

Echoes of the Past

In the following days, Adrian ordered full-scale background checks on everyone who had once been close to Claire’s mother—business partners, distant relatives, employees, even social acquaintances. Daniel brought in a private investigation team, combing through archives, old estates, and financial records.

Meanwhile, Claire immersed herself in memory.

She spent hours flipping through old photo albums and boxes that Adrian had recovered from her family’s storage unit. She searched for faces, names, anything that might trigger recognition. But the more she looked, the more her past blurred into shadows and unanswered questions.

It wasn’t until she opened her mother’s jewelry box that something clicked.

A small, hidden compartment at the bottom. Locked.

She fetched a tiny key from a locket her mother once wore and turned it with shaking hands.

Inside was a letter—old, yellowed, and folded neatly.

Claire pulled it out and read:

Dearest Evelyn,

You know I loved you. But what you did—stealing those designs—ruined me. I lost everything. And now I hear your daughter is marrying into the Carter family? As if you can climb back to power through her? No. I won’t let that happen. I may have fallen, but I’m not gone.

One day, the past will come knocking. And when it does, neither you nor your precious Claire will be safe.

It was signed only: G.

Claire sat back, her pulse racing.

“I think I know who’s behind this,” she whispered.

The Name She Feared

Claire stood before Adrian that night, holding the letter out to him. His brows furrowed as he read it, and when he finished, he let out a slow, measured breath.

“Gavin Thorn,” she said before he could ask. “He was an industrial designer. My mother worked with him before she met my stepfather. They were close once. Rumor had it they had an affair.”

“And she stole his designs?”

Claire nodded. “She used them to land a major deal. It was one of the first stepping stones in her climb to high society. He sued her, but she countered with better lawyers—and won. He vanished after that.”

Adrian’s face hardened. “And now he’s back.”

Claire sat on the edge of the couch, staring into the fire. “All this time, I thought the world hated me because of Liam. Because of Ava. But it started before that. I’m paying for a sin I didn’t commit.”

“No,” Adrian said fiercely. “You’re not. You’re not your mother. And if this man—Gavin—is coming after you, then he’ll have to go through me.”

Claire looked up at him, something breaking in her expression. “Adrian, I’m scared.”

He knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. “I won’t let anything happen to you. Or to our son. But you need to trust me. Completely. Even when it gets ugly.”

She nodded, her grip tightening on his.

The Trap is Set

By morning, Adrian had a plan.

“If Gavin wants to settle a debt,” Adrian said, “we’ll give him a chance to do it publicly. Let him reveal himself. But on our terms.”

Claire watched him pace the length of the office, his mind already ten steps ahead.

“How?” she asked.

“We host a gala,” he replied. “A charity event. High profile. Cameras. Security. And an invitation list that includes every power player from Evelyn Donovan’s past.”

Claire’s stomach flipped. “You think he’ll come?”

“If he’s watching—and I believe he is—then yes,” Adrian said. “He wants to humiliate you. Threaten you. He won’t be able to resist.”

Daniel, standing at the side, added, “I’ll make sure we have facial recognition and backup ready. If he shows up, we’ll identify him and deal with him quietly.”

Claire nodded, steeling herself. “Then let’s do it.”
