Chapter 135

Enemies at the Gates

The morning after the interview, the world was on fire.

Social media buzzed with Claire’s poised defiance. News anchors dissected every word she had said, either calling it a redemption arc or dismissing it as well-rehearsed manipulation. But the consensus was clear: the scandal hadn’t crushed Claire—it had made her dangerous.

Adrian sat at the head of the conference table, flanked by Daniel and the executive board. Claire stood behind him, silent but commanding, watching the room for any flickers of betrayal.

“This investigation threatens more than just our image,” said Marcus Lane, the CFO. “We have a merger closing in three weeks, and the stakeholders are nervous.”

Adrian’s tone was icy. “Let them be nervous. If they want to pull out, I’ll buy them out myself.”

“Adrian,” Daniel warned, “if you do that, you’ll burn through a third of your liquidity.”

“I’d rather burn cash than bend to Victor,” Adrian replied coldly. “We don’t negotiate with cowards.”

Claire’s gaze swept across the board members—half of whom wouldn’t meet her eyes. Fear, shame, or worse, guilt. The line between ally and enemy was getting harder to draw.

She took a step forward.

“Let me be clear,” she said, her voice ringing through the glass-and-steel boardroom. “This attack isn’t just on Adrian. It’s on me. On us. And if any of you believe I’m a liability, speak now.”

The room fell deathly silent.

When no one spoke, Claire continued. “Then let’s stop acting like we’ve already lost. We fight back—with strategy, with control, and with truth. If you want to survive this, then remember: weakness is what Victor expects. Let’s not give it to him.”

The board remained quiet, but something shifted. Claire had earned their respect. Maybe even their loyalty.

Adrian glanced up at her with something close to awe. In that moment, she wasn’t just his wife—she was a queen on the battlefield.

Later That Day – An Unexpected Visitor

Back at the penthouse, Claire collapsed onto the couch, exhaustion threatening to devour her. Her phone buzzed, and she frowned at the unknown number.

She almost ignored it—until instinct made her pick up.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice crackled on the other end. Low. Shaky. Familiar.

“You don’t know me,” the voice began. “But I know Victor. I know what he’s planning.”

Claire sat upright, adrenaline washing away her fatigue.

“Who is this?”

“I can’t say. I’m already taking a risk by calling,” the woman said quickly. “But you need to know—Victor isn’t just leaking stories. He’s digging up something. Something about the fire ten years ago. He’s looking for proof.”

Claire’s blood turned cold.

“What fire?” she asked carefully.

But the line went dead.

Adrian walked in seconds later, loosening his tie. He took one look at her face and dropped everything.

“What happened?”

Claire stared at the phone, her voice distant. “Someone just warned me… about Victor. And a fire. From ten years ago.”

Adrian stilled.

His face gave it away—just for a second.

“You know what she’s talking about,” Claire whispered. “Don’t you?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence was an answer in itself.

Flashback – The Fire That Changed Everything

Ten years ago.

The night air had been thick with smoke as Adrian stood in front of a burning warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Flames licked the night sky, and sirens wailed in the distance. Daniel stood beside him, blood staining his shirt.

“It wasn’t supposed to go this far,” Adrian muttered.

Daniel glanced at him. “You think Victor didn’t know? He set this whole thing up. You walked right into his trap.”

Adrian looked down at the crumpled body being wheeled into an ambulance—Victor’s former partner, an accountant who’d threatened to expose them both.

“No one can ever know,” Adrian said. “If this ties back to me, it’s over.”

Daniel had nodded. “Then we bury it.”

And they did.

For ten years.

Back in the Present

Claire crossed her arms, watching Adrian as if seeing him for the first time.

“Tell me about the fire.”

He exhaled slowly, almost in relief. “It wasn’t supposed to happen. Victor used me. He had an informant—an accountant ready to blow the whistle on Victor’s laundering operation. I thought I was helping protect the business. Instead, I got played.”

Claire’s voice was quiet. “Was anyone killed?”

“Almost. The man survived, but he disappeared. No one ever found him.”

Claire sat down, rubbing her temples. “So this is what Victor’s holding over your head.”

Adrian nodded. “It’s my biggest mistake. And now, he wants to use it to destroy everything I’ve built.”

Claire looked up at him, steel in her eyes. “Then we find that man. Before Victor does.”

A Dangerous Hunt Begins

The next 48 hours blurred into a whirlwind of encrypted messages, calls to long-lost contacts, and late-night meetings in shadowed corners of the city.

Daniel had managed to track a lead: the accountant—Elliot Marris—was last seen in a coastal town under a new name. The problem? So had Victor’s men.

“We have to get there first,” Adrian said, climbing into the private jet.

Claire joined him, laptop in hand. “I’ve reached out to a reporter I trust. If we find Elliot, we tell the truth—on our terms. No spin. No filters.”

Adrian glanced at her, pride etched into his tired features. “You’re becoming more dangerous than me.”

Claire smirked. “About time someone leveled the playing field.”

As the jet ascended into the clouds, neither of them said it—but they knew. The war was entering its most critical phase. And the next move could either save them… or ruin them forever.

Elsewhere – Victor’s Warning

In a dark-paneled room filled with cigarette smoke and expensive scotch, Victor Carter sat across from a tall, thin man with eyes like glass.

“Do you have him?” Victor asked.

The man nodded. “He’s on the move. But he’s scared. Someone else is chasing him.”

Victor smiled cruelly. “Adrian always did clean up his messes too late. Find Marris. Bring him to me. Alive.”

The man stood, his voice cold. “And if Blackwood gets in the way?”

Victor’s gaze darkened. “Then you remind him what it feels like to lose everything.”
