CHAPTER 248
Happy ending.
SCARLETT
“You cannot shove him, Penny; he is your brother,” Roman says as gently as he can.
“I shove him because he is my brother, Dad.” His four-year-old daughter answers without a care in the world.
“But I did not fall.” Greyson grins at her, jumping up, eyes bright with mischief.
“If I push you again, you will.” She narrows her gaze at him.
“You will have to catch me first!” Greyson toss snow in her face and runs away. Immediately, she runs after him, and I sigh, holding the baby properly in my arms.
“She talks back a lot for a four-year-old.” Rome slides his arm around my waist and presses his lips to my temple.
“Which is your fault, because you’ve spoiled them rotten,” I whisper and look down at baby Cateleya, who stole Adeline’s face and Luca’s eyes. She’s just a few months old and is still the cutest. Soon, she will be running around with her older cousins, and I look forward to a full house.
“You’re almost late for your lecture.” He tells me, caressing her cheek with his finger.
After I had my twins, I knew that I wanted to go back to work. I couldn’t let my education go to waste, and I wanted to share knowledge with people, so I went back to school, fine-tuned what I already had, and moved up from a teaching assistant to a lecturer in just three years. I now teach at the University of British Columbia. It is a long way from what I expected to do and be, but it is something I am very proud of. It helps that my entire family supports me.
“Will you drive me there? I don’t want to take the cab.” I run my fingers through the baby’s curly hair.
“I will, and I’ll wait for you to be done. We can pick up something for dinner on our way back.” He tells me, hand lingering on my waist.
We return inside, and Adeline smiles. Luca is holding Penny firmly with one hand and holding Grey with the other. He narrows his gaze at them and warns, “No running in the house. What if you fall and get injured? What if you wake Cateleya? No more running. Now, go to your rooms and get ready for dinner.”
“Okay.” They grumble and head to their rooms. They don’t bother looking at us because they know we won’t contradict his words. He is the stern uncle, and I am very grateful to him. To me, I’ll always see them as our babies, and it gets hard to be firm with him. He has no problem with it. Roman is worse than I am. All Penny has to do is look at him with big, beautiful eyes, and he’ll buy her the world if she wants.
“I need to feed her,” Adeline whispers, and I nod.
I hand over the baby and tell them. “So, we’re heading to town and will be back in the next two hours. Will you be fine, right? Caleb, Eve, Damian and Elena will swing by soon.”
“Yes, we will be fine.” Luca gives me a small smile before focusing on his little family.
I head to the bedroom to change out of my outfit into something formal. Roman watches me as I pack my hair in a tight bun and apply my makeup.
“I have been thinking of a mini vacation, just you and me.” He rasps, voice thick with desire.
Having children means we do not get to have sex as much as we used to. It is pretty annoying, but we have gotten used to it.
“Where would we go?” I walk to him and sit on his lap.
“London, or New York. I’ll go wherever you want to. We do have houses everywhere.” He runs his hand over my chest before pressing a kiss to my neck. Heat spreads through me, and I squirm in his hold.
“Let’s do New York.” I get up, already feeling myself come unravelled bit by bit. It has been almost ten years, and he still makes me come undone every time. Our love for each other has only strengthened.
I make it to school in time, and he sits behind my class, working on his laptop, while paying attention to the surrounding. It has been over five years since Emiliano died, but the impact he left behind is still skin-deep in us. I always carry a gun in a secret compartment in my car, and I am pretty sure Roman is carrying now. Our children have no idea of the struggles and sacrifices we had to make, and they will never know. I had a wonderful childhood, but my teenage years were tainted with assignments from my father and the burden of being a Diaz. Penelope and Grayson will never know that burden.
Liam and Jun have stabilised the Cartels – it took a lot of money, influence and power to get a wild place like that under control, but we figured it out. In between all this chaos, we have built an empire that can not be broken. Ironically, Emiliano died for the empire he failed to build. He was hellbent on doing it, on using my children and on dark days, I wonder what would have happened if he succeeded, what would have happened to Penelope, who has my fire in her, and Greyson, who is protective like his father. I am glad I’ll never have to know.
My parents paid the ultimate sacrifice for me, and I have done the same for my children. Some stories do not end with a happy ending, but some do. Our story is far from ending, and I know in the next decade, our children will take the world by storm.
He links our hands and walks me to the car.
“Do you want more children?” I ask him, smiling.
He frowns at me, running his gaze over my face. “You’re not pregnant.”
“Of course, I’m not, but do you want me to be? Do you want more children?” I probe. I need to know that he is happy with the life we’re living, with the pace we’re taking.
“Not now, not when you just became a lecturer, and I know you’re on your way to becoming a tenured Professor. We may have other children way down the line, and we may not. I don’t mind whatever happens. You have given me a family already.” He says earnestly, and I smile.
I throw my arm around his shoulder and kiss him softly. He is my happy ending.
