Chapter 145 He is your destiny.

Chapter 145 He is your destiny.
CHAPTER 145
He is your destiny.
SCARLETT – POINT OF VIEW

Something is wrong.

Adeline calls in our security detail immediately. They shut the back door. The only thing standing between us and whatever was coming was a door and a white picket fence. Not the best protection, but it would hold for as long as we need it to.

Something has shifted in the air. They were coming.

“Is there a problem?” Russell looks at us. There are four of them. It wouldn’t be enough.

“Do you think Emiliano is coming for us? Oh, dear God. Did I lead him here?” Celeste pales with fear.

“Emiliano?” Rue stiffens in shock and pulls out her phone to call for backup.

“Shut up,” Adeline snaps, nods at me, and we walk to the wall.

Through the small gap in the window, I see the nurse. She is standing by the door, her head slightly angled, and a phone in her hand.

My pulse slows, and horror sinks into my bones.

We return to our team. Celeste looks ready to pass out from fear.

“We should leave now. We can make it.” The bodyguard snaps, accent think.

“No, we cannot. Let’s hold where we are. Call for backup, as many as you can. We’ll call our husbands. We do not have much time. We’ll need your guns. We must make weapons with whatever we can find.” Adeline snaps, tone sharp as a knife.

I pull out my phone and call Roman. I wait with a pounding heart, but he does not pick. Adeline calls Luca, and he picks immediately. I try not to read too much into it.

“Adeline,” Luca speaks, but she cuts him off, “We are at Roman’s mom's place. I believe we have been lured into a trap. Emiliano’s men will be here in seconds. We … we need help, so come.”

Luca loses his mind, falling over his words.

“I do not have time for this, husband.” She seethes.

Roman’s voice slips through the phone, and my heart stops beating.

“Scarlett,” he murmurs, an urgency to his words.

“I’m here.” I inhale, pushing past the knot in my throat.

“I need you alive. Alive, Scarlett. We have unfinished business.” His words are hard and breathless as if he’s running. My pulse skips a beat. Goosebumps break over my skin. I do not have time to listen to him.

“They are here.” Rue hands me her gun, and Adeline pulls out a knife from her shoes.

I end the call, keep the phone, and welcome the bulletproof vest forced on me. Addie wears hers, too. We are leaving our security detail defenceless, but they will survive. I turn to Celeste and carefully help her wear one. Then, I look at Rue, “Stay with her. Do not leave her side under any circumstances.”

The phone keeps ringing. Panic pours like salt on a wound. The sound of vehicles fill the air. Celeste has tears in her eyes, and her shoulders are shaking.

Roman is coming. He is coming. In the meantime, stay alive.” I say firmly.

“Scarlett,” Addie snarls impatiently.

Rue nods at me, pulls Celeste away, and I join Adeline, but there is not enough time to plan.

Everything erupts.

The first shot shatters the window before the sound even registers. Glass explodes inward, a violent spray of glittering shards.

We stay where we are, behind the door, plastered to the walls. My heart is pounding as the bullets rain down, ruining the lovely house I wanted.

Rage burns through me, but I hold on to the gun firmly.

Gunfire erupts outside, sharp and controlled. The policemen are down. We stay where we are here, then I realise they will come in here, so we might as well go to them.

“We are going in.” I mouth, and she is already moving.

We push the door open carefully, pushing through the haze of gunfire and smoke.

Addie runs forward. She flips the table with a violent shove, using it as her cover.

I lay flat against the wall, my heart pounding. I see shadows through the curtains. A crash sounds. The front door bursts open, splintering everywhere. I stay where I am, gun in hand, ready to fire.

“Breached.” She yells, and our security details run forward.

From my peripheral vision, I see the nurse.

She pulls something from her uniform and aims it at Adeline.

I don’t think. I just lunge at her, crashing into her hard.

We hit the ground, and I slam my fist in her face.

She dodges my next hit and slips out of my hold. My arms are up, shielding against her punches. She’s strong, agile, and obviously trained. I am rusty. I can’t remember the last time I was in a fight.

Adeline grunts as an armed soldier runs in and slams his gun on her head.

“Addie!” I scream in horror.

The nurse banks on my distraction and slams her boots on my chest.

I stagger backwards, pain streaming through my entire body.

“You are weaker than we were told.” The nurse laughs, struts to me.

I get up slowly, crack my neck, and fist my hands. She is still laughing.

“I was told not to hurt your pretty face, but I will.” She spits out blood, grabs a knife from the counter and runs at me.

I dodge her the first time easily, my body remembering the months I spent in the cold, in Budapest, training to be this.

She comes at me again.

I move fluidly, kicking the knife out of her hand and into mine. I wrap my elbows around her neck and slam her on the ground.

Then, I sit on her, grab the knife from the ground and press it to her neck.

“They told you about me?” I grin, holding her down as she thrashes.

“Fuck you.” She grunts, and I punch her in the face.

I do it again, and again. Gunshots ripple in the air around me, but I don’t stop.

I drag her up, push her against the wall, and whisper, “How many are coming?”

She laughs, blood in her mouth, “You will never survive this. You belong to him, and you cannot outrun him. He is your destiny.”

I am vaguely aware of the pain in my body. A gunshot rings out and the soldier drops dead. Addie has blood all over her, and it’s not hers.

I focus on the nurse. I should probably let her live. She might be useful, but I don’t want to.

“My face will be the last thing you see. Remember, you chose the wrong side.” I murmur, sounding bored as I run the knife deep in her throat, slitting.

Blood splatters all over my face, and even then, I don’t stop, not until she stops moving.

I step back, and her body drops.

I wipe the blood from my face, a savageness awakening in me.

“More are coming. We need to get ready.” I whisper, wiping the blood away.

We are alone.
