The moonlit courtyard, where Natalie and I sought refuge from the weight of prophecies and uncertainties, became a sacred space of shared laughter and whispered confidences. As I delved deeper into the teachings of the elders, the bond between Natalie and me grew stronger. She was my lifeline in a world of mysticism and hidden truths.
The elders continued to unravel the intricacies of my heritage. Symbols adorned the walls of the council chamber, each telling a story of the delicate balance between our kind and the celestial forces that governed us.
The leader had been more than helpful, guiding me as I continued my learning journey. He said something to me one day that stuck. “Arya, you are not just a member of our pack. You are a daughter of the moon goddess herself. The powers within you are gifts, reflections of the cosmic energies that flow through our veins."
The weight of the revelation settled on my shoulders, a mixture of awe and responsibility. My connection to the moon goddess explained the dormant powers awakening within me. The elders, patient and resolute, taught me how to harness these energies, guiding me through exercises that stretched the boundaries of my understanding.
Nights turned into days as I navigated the intricacies of my newfound abilities. The moon, a silent witness to my journey, bathed the courtyard in its ethereal glow. The teachings became a dance with cosmic energies, and with each passing moment, I felt a connection to something greater than myself.
Natalie, my constant companion, the only visitor I’d been allowed, brought a sense of normalcy to the mystical world I was discovering. When the training sessions concluded, she would join me in the courtyard, and the weight of prophecies would momentarily lift.
“Arya, this is incredible,” she exclaimed one day when I told her of my findings about my heritage. “You're like a bridge between our pack and the celestial forces. It's like you were destined for something extraordinary."
Her words carried a warmth that resonated with the uncertainty within me. "Nat, it's overwhelming. The powers, the responsibilities—I sometimes wonder if I'm strong enough to bear this burden.
Natalie squeezed my hand, her eyes filled with unwavering support. "You are strong, Arya. And you're not alone in this. We'll face whatever comes our way together."
In the moonlit courtyard, we shared stories and dreams that transcended the mysticism surrounding us. Laughter echoed through the night, a testament to the enduring strength of friendship amidst the complexities of fate.
As the days passed, a sense of normalcy formed around Natalie's visits. The courtyard, once a place of solitude, became a haven where the duality of my existence found balance. In her company, I could momentarily set aside the weight of prophecies and embrace the simplicity of human connection.
One evening, as the moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver sheen over the courtyard, Natalie arrived with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. “Arya, I thought we could use a break from all the serious stuff. How about a little stargazing?"
The suggestion brought a smile to my face, a welcome reprieve from the intensity of my training. "That sounds perfect, Nat."
We lay on the courtyard floor, our eyes fixed on the canvas of stars overhead. I thought of Tyler, just like I always did. There was not a day that went by that I didn’t think of him. “How is he?”
“Tyler?” Natalie asked. “Angry. Frustrated. He misses you.”
Tears gathered in my eyes. “I miss him too.”
Natalie turned her head to me. “I know. I’m sure he knows that too. You’re doing this for the two of you. He understands that.”
I nodded, wiping the side of my eyes. Natalie was right anyway. Then something hit me. “Do you know what happened between him and Lauren? Why does she hate me so much?”
Natalie snorted. “Lauren is a sore loser. She hates losing, is all, and it’s hard for her to accept you’re with Tyler now. Which is saying a lot because she was never with Tyler.”
“Never?”
She shook her head. “Her father has always wanted her to be the Luna of the Rogues and I think that’s where she got the idea from. He made her believe she would marry Tyler.”
“Did they ever…” I licked my lips. “You know, sleep together?”
Natalie smiled. “You’d have to ask him yourself, sweetie.”
“Yeah,” I nodded, feeling stupid. What was I doing, badgering Natalie for information? It wasn’t my business what happened between them anyway. Even if something had happened, it was in the past. Tyler loved me now and that was all that mattered. Still, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Lauren had gone to great lengths to ensure my union with Tyler didn’t hold. Something told me she wouldn’t give up that easily.
“Don’t think about it too much, Arya. You’ll get a headache. Once you’re done with your training, everyone will know you’re meant to be with Tyler. Even Lauren won’t be able to do anything about it then.”
If she doesn’t go after Tyler now that I was temporarily out of the picture, a little voice in my head whispered. I was being paranoid but I had to be sure. “Do you know if Tyler has seen her since I left?”
“He told Nate that she approached him with a marriage offer after you were taken.”
I swallowed a thick ball of spit. “What did he say?”
Natalie scoffed. “Are you kidding? He asked her to leave, of course. You’re being paranoid, Arya. Tyler loves you. Only you. I’m surprised you’d even doubt that.”
“You’re right. I’m being silly. I just…” I sighed. “I miss him so much, it’s killing me.”
Sympathy filled Natalie’s gaze. “I know. Soon, you’ll be out. I promise. Until then, remember Tyler has eyes for only you.”
I nodded. I had no idea what the next few days held but something told me it was going to be interesting.
