Chapter 136 Nalira's Name
Chapter 136 Nalira's Name
Nalira's POV
She woke at three in the morning with her hands already in front of her face.
Not reaching for anything. Just up, palms facing her, the way hands came up when something was happening in them that the sleeping mind registered before the waking one did.
She looked at them in the dark.
Her name-threads were glowing.
Not the alarming kind of glow, the kind she had learned to read as damage or activation or crisis. The kind she had seen in the five fragments when all of them were together, warm and steady and complete. Her threads, her specific name-structure, running at a frequency she had not felt in them before.
Brighter. More present.
She sat up properly and looked.
After five contacts with First Names, something in her had changed and it had changed in the direction of more rather than less. She ran the needle across her own thread without thinking, professional reflex, the reading posture as automatic as breathing.
The threads were solid. Every one of them. The specific quality of a name that had been used at full capacity consistently and had strengthened in the use the way muscles strengthened in exercise. No damage. No thinning. The thread that the contract clause had cut and the Fifth fragment had helped restore was as solid as everything around it, integrated rather than patched.
She sat in the dark and looked at her glowing hands and thought about what five contacts with First Names actually did to a weaver.
The founding record described the exchange as mutual. The weaver received the name, the name received the weaver. She had thought about what the name received. She had spent considerably less time thinking about what she received in return, beyond the practical fact of having the exchange running both ways.
But here was the practical fact.
Each contact had left something in her threads. Not a foreign frequency, not something additional. A deepening. The specific quality of a name that had been acknowledged by something ancient and enormous and had been found sufficient for the acknowledgment. Each time the exchange ran, some part of the name of Music or Memory or Fire or Time had looked at her and recognized her as real and specific and belonging to the oldest layer, and that recognition had settled into her threads the way everything settled, building rather than diminishing.
She was not becoming something other than herself.
She was becoming more of herself than she had been.
She sat with that for a moment and the city moved around her in the specific quiet of its middle hours, the aether warm in the stones, the clock tower two districts over ticking forward at the correct speed for the first time in two hundred years.
She got up and found her notebook in the dark and turned on the lamp at the bench and sat down.
She wrote it in the case notes. Not in the main repair log. In the section she had started three months ago labeled methodology observations, the professional record of what the First Name contacts required and produced, the documentation that did not exist before she started making it.
She wrote it precisely. Thread response post-contact. Increased solidarity across full name structure. Frequency deepening consistent with sustained use at oldest aether layer. No adverse effects. Process appears cumulative.
Then she stopped.
She looked at what she had written.
Process appears cumulative.
She had been thinking about this as a side effect of the work. Something happening to her as a result of the contacts, secondary to the purpose, incidental.
But the founding record had described the exchange as mutual. Designed to be mutual. Not accidental. The original founding weavers had not described the weaver's side of the exchange as incidental. They had described it as necessary.
She pressed her finger to the page.
A weaver who was becoming more fully herself with each contact was not incidentally benefiting from the work. She was being built into something specific by the work. The same way the anchors were being built into something specific. The same way Vera was now the living connection between transformation and control, and Dara was now carrying the weight of every memory ever held.
What was she being built into?
She looked at her hands. Still faintly glowing, the threads running warm and solid and present.
She wrote one more line in the case notes.
Query: is the weaver's role in the sequence the same as the anchors' role, or different in kind?
She looked at it.
She had been thinking of herself as the mechanism. The person who heard the names and facilitated the settlements. The conduit.
But Music lived in her. Not in an anchor. In her. And the exchange with Time had been different from the others, more mutual, the recognition deeper, and she was woven into the foundation layer, and five contacts had made her threads stronger rather than depleted them, and the founding record had described the exchange as necessary rather than incidental.
She was not just the mechanism.
She closed the notebook.
The lamp was still on. Three forty in the morning. She had a repair case at eight and a schedule meeting with Marco at nine and the Name of Loss was in two weeks, Tor ready and waiting, and the thing outside the boundary was listening to the clock and not moving.
She was also, she realized, not tired.
Her threads were running at a frequency she had not managed to sustain this long since the restoration weaving, the specific alert quality of a name that was fully engaged with what it was.
She opened the notebook again and added one more line.
Find out what the founding record says about the weaver's role across the full sequence. Not the mechanism role. The other one.
Her device lit up on the bench beside the notebook. The Librarian's identifier. Sent at three forty-two in the morning, which meant the Librarian had been awake or had never slept, neither of which was surprising.
You are awake. Good. I was going to wait until morning but since you are awake.
There is something the founding record does not say explicitly. I know because I wrote the sections that do not say it.
The weaver who facilitates the full sequence of twelve contacts does not simply hear the First Names.
She becomes the thirteenth.
