Chapter 48 Silver Cage Or A Future?
The iron gates of the Harrington estate opened with a familiar, heavy groan, and Sarah felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach as they drove up the winding path. She looked at Alex, whose face was as hard as the stone statues passing by the window, his hand gripping hers so tightly that his knuckles were white.
When they stepped out into the cool night air, the massive front doors were already open, and Richard Harrington stood in the light of the foyer, looking every bit the king of his castle, he had a broad smile on his face as if this were a normal family Sunday, and he walked down the steps with a light, easy stride that made Sarah’s heart beat a little faster with caution.
"Back again so soon, Alex, I’m glad you realized that a house is much better for a serious conversation than my office desk," Richard said, his voice smooth and full of a fake warmth that made Alex stiffen even more, and Richard didn't wait for an answer before he turned to Sarah and took her hand, bowing his head in a way that felt more like a power move than a polite greeting.
"And Sarah, it is good to see you again, I hope you have had a chance to think about what we discussed previously, because I truly believe there is a path forward for all of us if we can just find some common ground over a good meal," Richard told her, and he led them into a dining room that felt like a museum, lit by dozens of candles.
The first course was served in a silence that was only broken by the sound of silver hitting porcelain, and Richard kept his eyes on his son, his expression full of a strange kind of pride that made Sarah feel even more confused, because even though he was trying to crush her business, he looked at Alex like he was the most precious thing he owned, and it was clear that Richard didn't hate his son, he was just obsessed with owning him.
"I had the chef prepare the beef exactly how you liked it when you were younger, Alex, I know you’ve been living on student food and takeout for too long, and a man of your stature needs a real meal to think clearly," Richard said, picking up his wine glass and swirling the dark red liquid, and Alex just stared at his plate, his voice sounding like gravel when he finally looked up.
"We already had this talk in your office, Dad, and I told you then to leave her alone, so why are we doing this whole show with the candles and the fancy food when nothing has changed since Tuesday," Alex said, his jaw locked tight, and Richard just laughed softly and shook his head like Alex was a child who didn't understand how the world worked.
"Everything has changed, Alex, because now Sarah is here to see the life you are throwing away, and I think she is smart enough to see that the Harrington legacy is not a burden, it is a tool that can fix every single one of her problems in an instant," Richard said, gesturing to the room around them, and his eyes flickered to Sarah with a look of practiced empathy that she didn't trust for a second.
"You're the one who caused the problems, Richard, you're the one who put the audit on my firm and scared my clients away, so don't act like you're the hero coming to save me from a fire you started," Sarah said, keeping her voice steady even though she felt like she was shaking inside, and Richard didn't get angry, he just leaned forward and folded his hands on the table.
"Business is a game of pressure, Sarah, and I only applied it because I wanted Alex to see that his choices have consequences for the people he claims to love, and if we can agree on a future tonight, the audit disappears, the frozen accounts are released, and your firm becomes the crown jewel of the Veridian project," Richard explained, and he looked at Alex with an intensity that made Sarah realize how much they were alike, two men who would move mountains to get what they wanted, only Alex did it out of love and Richard did it out of a need for control.
"I’m not trading my life for her business, that’s not a deal, it’s a hostage situation," Alex growled, his hand tightening around his glass so hard Sarah feared it would shatter, but Richard just sighed and shook his head like he was disappointed in Alex’s lack of vision.
"It’s an invitation to your throne, Alex, you have the Vane blood and the Harrington name, and you are wasting your life playing at being a commoner while Sarah struggles to keep her head above water, and I am sure she doesn't want to be the reason you stay small and hidden," Richard said, and he looked at Sarah, waiting for her to realize that he was offering her a way out of the disaster he had created, and for a second, she felt the logic of it pulling at her, because she did want Alex to have the world, even if it meant she had to share him with this house.
The dinner went on and Richard spoke about the company’s future as if it were a beautiful dream, making it sound like Alex’s return was the only thing that could make the family whole again, and Sarah watched the way Alex fought against the charm, his face looking tired as he tried to stay angry while his father treated him with nothing but respect and affection, and she saw how Richard subtly made it seem like the easiest choice in the world was for Alex to just say yes.
"I need to check on the dessert in the kitchen, the chef is new and needs a firm hand, so please excuse me for a moment," Richard said, standing up and patting Alex on the shoulder as he walked past, leaving the two of them alone in the flickering candlelight, and Alex immediately reached for Sarah’s hand.
"We have to leave, Sarah, he’s doing exactly what he did in the office but he’s doing it with a smile this time, he’s trying to make you think this is a good thing for me," Alex whispered, his eyes looking desperate, but before Sarah could answer, she heard the soft sound of Richard’s shoes on the rug as he came back into the room, but he didn't go back to his seat.
Richard walked behind Sarah and leaned down, his face so close to hers that she could smell the expensive brandy on his breath, and he spoke in a whisper that was so quiet Alex couldn't hear it over the sound of a servant clearing a plate on the other side of the room, and the warmth of his earlier smile was gone, replaced by a cold certainty that made her blood run cold.
"He’ll never be truly happy in your small world, Sarah, he belongs in this house and in that CEO chair, and if you really love him, you have to ask yourself why you are the one keeping him from his throne, so tell me, don't you want him to have everything he deserves?”
