Chapter 64 CHAPTER 64

Chapter 64 CHAPTER 64
SERA'S POV

I didn't know how to process what just happened. It made very little sense how a vampire assassin was crying on my shoulders and begging for forgiveness.

Or how I managed to keep my cool.

I quickly found my way to the bathroom, my decompression spot.

The tears weren't coming but I knew I couldn't stay around people.

He had tried to kill me, but he liked me too much to do it.

Is that my mind or the mate bond talking?

"Sabrina?" I called my wolf to attention because she was as stunned.

"I have very few answers my human, very little."

"Why are we still feeling these things? I thought Fabian was our second chance mate, meaning the first is gone or something."

"Or it could be that we have two mates."

"How the hell is that possible? A human and a vampire? Is everything about my life meant to be dramatic?"

"Very few answers, Sera. I swear the goddess didn't equip me well enough for the life she made for us."

"What are we even supposed to do? He said he's going to leave and never come back or something? I guess that's a good thing."

"If we reject him and cut the bond."

"Wait, we can do that?"

"Yes of course. We're not imprisoned to it. Just snip snap and we'll belong to Fabian alone."

"You're surprisingly happy about this."

"He's human, safe. I might be an animal but my primary goal is to keep you safe. If we accept Cael, he might kill us before we kill him. If we don't, his absence will keep hurting forever."

"There's just no winning this thing. I think I should try to understand this Dawnbringer thing before we go to the Council again. Remember how they tried to manipulate us by showing us that starved vampire?"

"That's what Cael was saying. We should resist or something."

"I hate to agree with him but I don't want to be a pawn in anyone's game. Our father must have his reasons for trying to hide us from the Council and it's definitely in that box so I will leave the diary for now and focus on it."

"You're on a good path. Are we forgiving him though?"

"Trust me, we don't have a choice. Even being angry at him hurts like hell."

When he hugged me, I nearly took him in to wipe his slate clean.

His scent was overpowering, my senses flooded with it and I floated on clouds.

But I kept reminding myself again and again how dangerous he is.

Even though I successfully killed three of his kind recently, I'm no match for a vampire of his calibre.

If he wanted me dead, I'd already be, and he'll get away with it.

But he seemed to have genuinely changed his mind.

I'll still keep up my guard though, it's not going down anytime soon.

I got a text from Naomi and I knew it was time to leave the bathroom.

When I got back from school, it was to an invitation from the Council in a black coloured paper.

On Friday, today is Monday.

"Congratulations," Aunty Kelly, said with a bright smile, "you must have passed their personal tests exceptionally well."

"Personal test?"

"Yes. Your mission was different from everyone else's so it was definitely about something else. They might begin training you now. Have you had a chance to look through your father's belongings?"

"I'm just starting."

"Hmm." She went back to sit down. "What about the vampire, I heard he's back in school. Did he talk to you?"

"Jeez, you're also trying to test me? Of course, he spoke to me. The entire school probably heard the conversation," I snapped.

"I apologise, I'm just... a little bit unsettled with this whole thing."

"You think I'm going to betray you."

"There's a mate bond between you both. I know I shouldn't have brought you out and exposed you to all of this but we as a family have to stand as one. We're standing with the Council."

"I'm going to reject him so you don't have to worry."

"What? Are you sure?"

"What other alternative is there? Tell me please because the thought of it alone drives me insane. He doesn't want to kill me anymore and I'm not going to try to do anything to him either so the best thing is to separate. But it hurts like hell so tell me what else can I do?"

"You're not going to kill him?" She frowned, her eyes squinting.

"Yes, why should I? He's waved the olive branch."

"Oh you don't get it, do you?"

"Get what?"

"It doesn't matter how you feel about him or if he's not hunting you anymore. Killing him and his brother who by the way, has been missing for a while now, is your mission. The next time you see him, ask him about that one, that's your main target."

"Aunty, you sound... different."

"I've been too soft with you and it's ruining things. I don't want to do that to you anymore, giving you this illusion that you have a choice or that your life is your own to dictate. You're the Dawnbringer, a weapon made for us to avenge the death of our ancestors. Everything I'm telling you, the elders and the council will do the same in more... harsh times. I'm just doing you the favour of giving you time to process it. You're my responsibility and this is the best I can do."

I was speechless for a bit, watching her watch me, both of us slowly growing apart in the short span of the moment.

"Can I.. go now?"

"Yeah, your dinner is in the microwave."

I don't have appetite anymore but I grab it anyway, or else I'll be waking the entire house up by 3am.

The second I got upstairs, I went into the box and began reading.

There's definitely something happening here that I'm not aware of because nothing is making sense anymore.

When I woke up for school the next day, my eyes were groggy, I'd only slept for two hours.

I spent the entire night reading about a war that shouldn't have even happened in the first place.

I stopped at the part of the first attempt at a treaty.

The vampires set up an ambush and wiped out the entire Pack leadership.

I couldn't read one word past that.

So you can imagine I was very much anti-vampire when I got to school the next day.

And displayed in such a cute way on my desk was a bouquet of flowers, chocolates and a box of BBQ lamb.

You could tell he'd gone online or something and asked how to surprise a werewolf girl or something.

I caught myself smiling until the class started oohing and aaing at me.

"Who is it from?" Tori asked.

"Who else? Mr Fabian Fabian," Anna laughed like it was a bad word.

"No it's not," I muttered, cause even before I found the paper attached to it, his scent was all over everything. "It's Cael."

"Oh my goodness, what if it's poisoned?"

To answer her question, I took a bite of the steak.

And then pretended to have a seizure.

"Sera!"

"Relax, I'm just trying to digest it. It tastes too good, here."

"Are you sure?"

"Wouldn't you want to come torment me in the afterlife?"

She laughed but took it from me anyway.

And then I read the letter.

{I know this is silly considering the crime I'm apologising for but I wanted something small. I realised I barely know you personally except how smart and beautiful you are. Can we fix that? I want to go on a date with you tomorrow during lunch. I promise to have you back early}

I laughed, hard.

Then handed it over to Tori who joined me and then she announced it to the whole class.

"The vampire wants to take her on a date! To kill her!"

He definitely thinks I'm stupid, not smart.

Like hell I'm going anywhere with you Mr Valkori, like hell!
