Chapter 43 The Reason
Rossie was the centre of the family, loved by everyone. Unfortunately, however, she experienced a completely different life when she became Bryce Johansen's wife. If Mr Cavendish found out about it, he would probably be furious and act brutally.
Darren then sighed deeply and said, "Hmm, it seems that what happened to you makes me rethink getting married. Or maybe I don't need to get married at all. "
Rossie quickly protested," No, no, no. I don't want rumors spreading that people work for me out of noble loyalty. That would tarnish my reputation. Besides, what happened to me might not necessarily happen to you! "
" Miss Rossie, why did you choose to marry Bryce?" asked Darren. His eyes narrowed with curiosity and a hint of sadness. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked such a personal question."
"Darren, I don't mind telling you," she replied.
"When I was twelve, my friends and I decided to go surfing at the beach where the waves were quite big. None of us were skilled at surfing, but we were determined to look cool. Because of our stupidity, we ended up drowning, and I was in the worst condition. I was thrown far away. "
" I was really scared and thought I might die. But then a 17-year-old lifeguard bravely charged through the waves to save me." Rossie looked up as she told the story.
"When I came to, I was on the beach, and my friends were around me. I also saw a handsome young man with brown hair in front of me, and he was the lifeguard. My heart was pounding at that moment; he was really charming."
"Hmm, let me guess, that lifeguard was Bryce Johansen!" Darren exclaimed suddenly.
Rossie nodded.
"Yes, I was so captivated by his courage and good looks that even though we were apart for several years, I couldn't forget him. Finally, we met again. I was interning at a company to fulfill my academic requirements for college, and he was my mentor at the office. That's when I realized we were meant to be together. Silly!"
Rossie smiled bitterly as she realized that her 13 years of love had come to an end. It faded like a short dream. While Darren listened silently, a deep sense of regret enveloped him. He couldn't shake the sadness that surrounded that moment.
"But Darren, even though I'm heartbroken, I can't hate him," Rossie continued.
"I loved Darren willingly, without regret for what had passed. I don't feel indebted for the time we spent together."
Meanwhile, Bryce had just arrived at his residence, and his mind was in turmoil. The weight on his chest felt like a huge rock, making it difficult for him to breathe.
Bryce remembered the disappointment and hatred in Rossie's eyes as if they were sworn enemies. He suddenly felt empty inside, as if he had lost someone important.
As Bryce entered his study, Hannah, the maid, suddenly knocked on the door. "Mr Bryce, Miss Jones is waiting for you in the living room."
"Tell her to go home! Tell her I don't want to see her!"
That answer surprised Hannah. Did Bryce finally have the courage? It was inspiring to see a fool turn into a better person.
"I already know the reason she's here." Bryce sat listlessly in his chair. He stared blankly ahead and continued, "Tell her that she doesn't need to bother coming here if she wants to talk about Jake's fate. She should go home and spend more time with her parents. I'll see her in a few days after everything has calmed down."
"What if he insists on staying?" asked Hannah.
"Just let him." Bryce sighed deeply and rubbed his forehead. He kept thinking about the phrase "useless."
He was angry that Rossie called him that. He never depended on him. How did he know if he was useless?
Hannah smiled and gave him a thumbs-up as he left the office.
Bryce frowned. It seemed Hannah really didn't like Liana. She was so happy to send her away.
Meanwhile, Hannah stood outside the villa, staring coldly at Lily, and said, "Mr. Bryce said he won't interfere in your family affairs. You can go home."
"Let me see him!" As she spoke, she almost barged in. But she was no match for Hannah, who was more physically imposing. Hannah only had to step forward to stop her, and Rossie instantly fell to the floor.
"How dare a servant like you push me? I'm Bryce's fiancée, the future Mrs. Johansen! I'll tell Bryce that you harassed me and get him to fire you! "Lily sat on the floor angrily and pointed at Hannah.
" Huh? We'll see about that. I will never acknowledge you even if Mr. Bryce marries you. Even if they divorce now, I will only recognize Ms. Rossie as the legitimate lady of the house. Anyone other than her can leave."
"You!" Lily's face reddened with anger.
"If you want to complain about me to Mr. Bryce, go ahead. I'd even be grateful if you could get him to fire me. I want to retire and can't find a good reason to do so."
Hannah hoped Bryce could see the cruel expression on Lily's face. This wasn't the sweet, harmless Lily she knew.
"Bryce! You have to help me! You can't just let this go!" Lily ignored Hannah. She preferred to sit on the floor and continue crying.
After a few moments without a response, Lily began to cry desperately.
"Aunt Miranda! You have to help me! Uncle Gerald!"
"Stop yelling! They're having dinner with Mrs. Johansen Senior. They won't be back anytime soon."
"Then I'll wait here until Bryce comes to see me!"
Hannah looked at the cloudy sky and said, "It's going to rain, I have to go inside. You can keep yelling if you want."
Then, she returned to the house. She ordered all the servants not to open the door for Lily under any circumstances.
Lily continued to scream for some time until her voice was hoarse. However, there was no sign of Bryce coming. Her face was pale as she began to panic and feel confused. She realized that Bryce had changed and was no longer easily manipulated.
In the past, he would have dropped everything to see her, no matter how busy he was. He would have tried his best to calm her down by offering her luxury cars and jewellery whenever she cried. He would have spent a lot of money to make her smile. But why was it so difficult for him to see her now?
Lily was soaking wet and shivering from the cold.
"Bryce, please, let me see you!"
"This is cheap acting! Only a fool would fall for this trick!" Hannah, standing near the window, mocked coldly.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps from behind. Hannah turned around and…
