Chapter 194 The Life They Chose Part 1
Chapter 194 The Life They Chose Part 1
Ivy POV
Summer was almost over. The mornings had started getting cooler, and the first leaves were turning at the edges. School supplies covered the kitchen table while backpacks waited by the front door.
Elara was eight. Finn was six. Both children knew they were wolves, but neither saw it as something strange. They had human friends at school and wolf friends at Blackwood.
They moved between both worlds without thinking about which one they belonged to.
That morning, Finn stood beside the kitchen table with his shoes already on.
"Mom, can we shift tonight?"
Breakfast sat untouched in front of him.
"You have school tomorrow."
His face fell."That's not fair."
Caden walked into the kitchen with his coffee and looked between us."Maybe this weekend."
Finn's face brightened."Really?"
I looked at Caden. He gave me an innocent smile."Fine. This weekend. But homework comes first."
Finn grabbed his plate and hurried toward the living room."Thank you!"
Elara followed him, laughing as he tried to race her down the hall. I watched them disappear."You're spoiling them."
Caden leaned down and kissed my forehead."They're only young once."
A smile pulled at my lips."I know."
The house filled with their voices again, and I stood there for a moment listening.
Years ago, mornings had meant survival.
Now they meant children arguing over breakfast. I would take that life every time.
Later that afternoon, I found an old photograph tucked behind a stack of books. My mother held me in her arms. I looked so small that it took me a moment to recognize myself. She was smiling at the camera, her cheek resting against my hair.
For years, I had thought about everything she never got to see. My graduation. My wedding. My children. So much of my life had happened without her.
But standing there with the photograph in my hands, the thought changed. She had not been able to give me those moments.
She had given me something else.
A chance to have them. A chance to grow into the woman I wanted to become. A chance to make my own choices instead of living according to someone else's plans.
I touched the photograph with my thumb before placing it back on the shelf. Outside, the children were playing in the yard. Caden was working in the garden, trying to keep Finn from pulling out the plants he had just put in.
The sight made me smile. This was the life my mother had wanted for me. Not because it was perfect. Because it was mine.
That evening, after the children went to bed, Caden and I sat on the porch. The woods stretched beyond the garden. Crickets filled the quiet, and the lights from the house glowed behind us.
"Do you ever miss it?" Caden asked.
I knew what he meant. The Keeper. The council. Blackwood. The responsibility that had once followed me everywhere.
"No."
I thought about the answer before continuing."I don't regret being the Keeper. It changed me. It gave me people I love. But I don't want that life back."
Caden nodded."Neither do I."
The mate bond rested quietly between us. Warm and familiar. I could feel him beside me, but I no longer needed the bond to reassure me that he was there.
"I used to think getting the bond back would make everything complete," I admitted.
Caden turned toward me."What changed?"
"I realized we were already complete."
His hand found mine.
"The bond came back because we wanted it. But it didn't build this." I looked toward the house."Our marriage did. Our family did. All the choices we made when nobody was forcing us to make them."
Caden's fingers closed around mine."You chose me before the bond returned."
"I'd choose you again."
He smiled and leaned closer."I know."
His kiss was soft and familiar. Nothing about it felt like destiny deciding our future for us. It felt like my husband kissing me on an ordinary night.
The back door opened before either of us could say anything."Mom!"
Finn ran onto the porch with Elara behind him."Can we go into the woods?"
I looked at Caden. He was already laughing."Looks like we've been outvoted."
"Only for an hour."
The children cheered.
Finn grabbed my hand before I could stand properly, while Elara ran ahead toward the edge of the yard. Caden followed us, shaking his head.
The path into the woods was familiar. We had walked it many times, but tonight felt different. The children ran ahead, their laughter carrying through the trees.
Finn turned around."Come on!"
"We're coming."
Caden reached for my hand. I took it. For a moment, I watched our children disappear between the trees. A younger version of me would have been afraid of what waited in those woods. She would have looked for danger. She would have wondered what would come next.
That girl had survived enough. This life was different. There was no prophecy waiting for me. No ancient voice demanding an answer. No council expecting me to solve another crisis.
There was only my husband, my children, and a quiet path through the woods. Caden looked at me."Ready?"
I smiled."Always."
We shifted. The change came naturally now. No fear. No struggle. Our wolves had become part of our lives rather than something we had to fight against.
Finn raced ahead, his smaller white wolf moving through the trees with more excitement than control. Elara black wolf chased after him, calling for him to slow down.
Caden's wolf ran beside mine. The children looked back once before racing ahead again. I followed them deeper into the woods.
For so long, freedom had meant escaping something. Now it meant having somewhere to go. I ran beside my family, listening to their laughter carry through the trees.
Nothing waited for me at the end of the path. For once, I did not need there to be. The life ahead was already ours.
