Chapter 191 The Morning After
Chapter 191 The Morning After
Ivy POV
Morning light slipped through the curtains and spread across the bedroom. For a while, I stayed still. Caden slept beside me, one arm resting across the pillow between us.
His hair was a mess, and his face looked softer in sleep. The wedding ring on my finger caught the light when I moved my hand. My husband.
The thought still felt strange. Not because I doubted it. Because after everything we had survived, something as simple as waking beside him felt almost too ordinary to be real.
The mate bond rested between us, warm and steady. No warning. No pull toward danger. Just Caden.
His eyes opened."You're staring."
A smile pulled at my lips. "I'm allowed to. You're my husband now."
He rubbed a hand over his face. "So that's going to be your excuse for everything?"
"Probably."
A tired laugh escaped him. His arm slipped around my waist and pulled me closer.
"You didn't sleep much," I murmured.
"Neither did you."
"I slept."
"You kept checking the bond."
I frowned. "Maybe once."
"Three times."
A laugh escaped me. "You were counting?"
"I could feel you."
His fingers moved gently over my hand, stopping at the ring."I kept thinking about yesterday."
"So did I."
He looked down at our joined hands. "After everything we went through, I still can't believe we're here."
I rested my head against his chest. His heartbeat was steady beneath my cheek.
"Do you regret any of it?"
His answer came without hesitation."Not one thing."
I closed my eyes. For the first time, the memories did not hurt. They were simply part of the road that had brought us here.
By the time we reached the kitchen, Caden had decided he was making breakfast. I watched him stand over the stove and tried not to laugh.
"What?"
"Nothing."
His eyes narrowed. "You're judging me."
"I'm watching."
"That's worse."
He placed something onto a plate and turned toward me with the confidence of someone who had prepared a five-course meal.
I looked at the plate."What is that?"
"Breakfast."
"That does not answer my question."
He stared at the food."I've improved."
"You made the same thing you burned before."
"I didn't burn it this time."
I looked closer."That's because it's still raw."
He burst out laughing. I covered my mouth, but it was too late."Fine. I'll make breakfast."
"No."
He moved the plate away from me."I'm a husband now. I have responsibilities."
"Burning food isn't one of them."
He stepped closer, slipped an arm around my waist, and kissed my cheek."Give me time."
I smiled against his shoulder. The apartment was quiet around us. No council meetings waited for us. No guards stood outside the door. Nobody needed me to make a decision that could affect an entire world.
There was only coffee, bad breakfast, and Caden trying to prove he could cook. I had once thought an ordinary life would feel small. It didn't. It felt like freedom.
After breakfast, Caden brought up the house again."I found a few places."
I looked up from my coffee. "You actually looked?"
He pulled out his phone."Of course."
Several houses appeared on the screen. One had a large yard. Another was farther from the city. Then he showed me a smaller house with a garden and enough space for two people to build a life.
I pointed at it."That one."
He smiled. "I knew you'd pick it."
"Why?"
"Because of the garden."
I looked at him. "You remember everything I say?"
"When it matters."
My chest warmed."We should see it."
"When?"
"Later this week."
He shook his head."Tomorrow."
I laughed. "You really don't like waiting."
"We've waited long enough."
That stopped me. He reached across the table and took my hand."Tomorrow."
I smiled. "Tomorrow."
The rest of the morning passed quietly.
I opened my university schedule and checked my upcoming classes. Seeing my psychology courses on the screen made something inside me settle.
This part of my life had nothing to do with wolves, the Keeper, the Founding Line, or the ancient world. It was mine."I want to finish my degree," I told Caden.
He looked over from the kitchen."You will."
"And after that, I don't know."
"Then figure it out when you get there."
I looked at him. There was no expectation in his face. No plan he had already made for me."Whatever I want?"
"Whatever you want."
The answer meant more than he knew.
For most of my life, other people had decided what I should be. Daughter. Keeper. Founding Line. Something useful to someone else.
Now I could simply be Ivy.
—
Maya called before lunch."So," she said the moment I answered, "how does it feel to be married?"
I glanced at Caden."Good."
"Just good?"
"Really good."
"Better."
I laughed. We talked about the wedding, then Blackwood, then the council. Her questions came so quickly that I barely had time to answer.
"Are you coming back soon?"
"I don't know."
"You aren't checking on everyone?"
"No."
A short silence followed."Really?"
I smiled."Really."
Caden watched me from across the room.
"The council is fine," I continued. "Sera, Lucas, and the others have everything under control."
Maya's voice softened."So you're really done?"
I looked at the ring on my finger."Yes."
No guilt followed the answer. No fear. Just certainty.
"Good," Maya replied. "Then live."
"I plan to."
"Good. And when you buy that house, I'm coming to see it."
I laughed. "You haven't even seen it."
"That has never stopped me before."
The call ended with another round of teasing. Caden raised an eyebrow."She wants to visit."
"She invited herself."
"Of course she did."
That evening, we stood together on the balcony. New York stretched beneath us, bright and restless. Cars moved through the streets. Apartment windows glowed across the buildings. Somewhere below, someone laughed.
Caden came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist."What do you want to do tomorrow?"
I leaned back against him."See the house."
"Anything else?"
"Breakfast somewhere that isn't made by you."
He laughed."Still holding that against me?"
"Forever."
His chin rested against my shoulder. "Anything else?"
I looked at the city."No."
The answer came easily. There was nothing I needed to fix. Nothing I needed to protect. Nothing waiting for me in the darkness.
The wolf world had its leaders. The council had its work. My friends had their lives.
And I had mine. I turned in his arms."I love you."
His hand rested against my cheek."I love you too."
The mate bond warmed between us, but I did not need it to prove anything. I already knew. Tomorrow, we would look at a house. I would go back to class.
We would argue over breakfast. We would make plans and change them. We would grow older together. For the first time, tomorrow did not feel like something I had to survive.
It was simply another day with Caden. And that was enough.
