ZAYN’S POINT OF VIEW
The atmosphere in the room lingered in a heavy silence for just a few fleeting seconds after Dylan made his declaration.
"Tomorrow." It was palpable, the weight of that word. It felt like a significant shift had occurred, a moment that marked a definitive turning point, even though none of us were truly prepared for the consequences of what was about to unfold. Dylan leaned back into the couch, his gaze fixed ahead as if he could already envision the events of tomorrow playing out in his mind.
Johnson took a seat once more, maintaining a steady calmness, but there was an underlying alertness to his demeanor. Brian stretched his arms and let out a deep breath, as if relieved the tension that had filled the air was finally starting to dissipate. As for me, I found myself watching Dylan a moment longer.
Because, yes, he had spoken those words and pledged to follow through. But there was a vast chasm between merely stating intentions and actually bringing them to life. Yet despite that uncertainty, there was a sense of reassurance in knowing that a course of action had been laid out, which was certainly an improvement over the chaotic state we had all been grappling with prior to this.Breaking the uneasy atmosphere, I clapped my hands once, startling them slightly.
“Alright,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension as everyone turned their attention toward me.
“That’s enough of that,” Brian interjected, a frown tugging at his lips.
“Enough of what, exactly?” I shrugged, gesturing around the room almost dismissively.
“This entire emotional breakdown session,” Johnson said, raising an eyebrow in my direction, as if trying to gauge my seriousness.
“You were right in the thick of it, too,” I pointed out, annoyance creeping into my tone.
“And now I’m putting a stop to it,” I replied decisively, firm in my stance.
I leaned forward just a bit, reaching out for the remote control that lay on the coffee table in front of us.
“You know, this conversation is really killing the vibe,” Brian quipped, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
I couldn't help but smirk, ready to tease him a little. “Oh, I’m sorry! Should we all just cry together instead? That would really lift the spirits, right?”
“Or maybe we could discuss something that doesn’t lead us down a path of despair,” Johnson chimed in, nodding in agreement as he settled in a bit more comfortably.
“Finally, some sense!” I sighed dramatically as I leaned back in my chair while stretching my arms overhead, trying to shake off the gloom that had settled over us.
Then, the word “Prom” popped into my head. As if on cue, Brian’s entire demeanor changed; he shot up straight in his seat, instantly alert.
“Oh… now we’re really talking,” he exclaimed, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. Johnson adjusted his posture, clearly intrigued by the new direction the conversation had taken.
“Now that’s a topic we should be talking about” I remarked, noticing even Dylan, who had been sitting quietly beside me, shifting his position ever so slightly. While he didn’t seem fully invested yet, at least he was listening and that was encouraging.
“Alright then,” I continued, eager to delve into the discussion.
“Let’s hear your thoughts!” Brian urged, leaning in with anticipation.
“Who’s taking who?” he asked, a wide grin spreading across his face like a child on Christmas morning.
“This is going to be quite revealing,” Johnson said, rolling his eyes but unable to hide his own curiosity.
“Chill out, we’re just talking,” I pointed a finger at him playfully.
“You first,” he told me, crossing his arms with a frown that only made him look more skeptical.
“Why do I have to go first?” I challenged, raising an eyebrow.
“Because it looks like you’ve already got your whole plan mapped out in your mind,” Brian joked, laughter bubbling up from deep within.
“To be honest, he might be onto something there,” Johnson sighed, casting an amused glance my way.
“...Amara,” I finally confessed, referring to a girl I had been thinking about.
“What? Wait... Amara?” Johnson echoed, trying to process the revelation. He nodded, clearly intrigued.
“She seems really nice,” I added, seeking to defend my choice.
“That’s it? I knew you liked her!” Brian burst out into laughter, the lightness of the moment breaking through the previous heaviness that had engulfed us.
“Bro said ‘nice’ as if he were reading straight from a textbook,” Johnson commented, casting a knowing look in my direction.
“She’s calm, easy to talk to, and full of good vibes definitely no drama,” I added with a smirk curving my lips.
“So basically… she’s the exact opposite of what’s happening in your life right now,” Brian chimed in, pointing a finger at him.
“Smart man,” Johnson replied, though he seemed to deliberately ignore our banter. However, I noticed a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth. It was pretty clear—he had feelings for her, even if he wasn’t ready to admit it. I nodded in agreement; the chemistry was palpable.
“Alright, I can respect that,” I said, acknowledging the situation.
“Johnson and Amara,” I mused, glancing over at Brian. “Now it’s your turn.”
He leaned back in his chair with an air of confidence, the corners of his mouth twitching upward. “I’m not going with anybody,” he declared.
I blinked in surprise. “...What do you mean, not going with anybody?”
Johnson frowned, confusion washing over his features. “Why not?”
Brian shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. “Honestly, I just don’t think I’m ready for any kind of girl’s drama right now.”
He hesitated for a moment, his expression shifting an almost imperceptible flicker of vulnerability crossed his face.
“Especially not after what Aria put me through.” The room fell into a brief silence not an oppressive silence, but one filled with a shared understanding of his pain. I nodded slowly, absorbing his words.
“Yeah… I get it. That makes sense. But I do think you should at least let go of the past and see if you can find love again,” Johnson said thoughtfully. Brian managed to force a smile at that, brushing off the suggestion with a casual wave of his hand.
“I’ve heard what you’re saying, but honestly… I’m choosing to go solo for now.”
“That’s fine,” I said, a playful grin creeping onto my face. “You do you eat, dance, have a good time, and then just leave the drama behind.”
“Free food and stress-free living,” he declared with a snap of his fingers, as if sealing the deal with an invisible agreement.
“Absolutely,” I replied, giving my head a gentle shake before leaning in closer, eager for the unfolding conversation.
“It’s my turn now,” Brian announced, pointing directly at me with a mischievous glint in his eye.
“This is bound to get interesting,” I said, a smirk playing across my lips, anticipating the playful chaos that was about to ensue.
“Mira,”i said and Johnson interjected, raising an eyebrow as if he were preparing to challenge us.
“Mira?” Brian burst into a short laugh at the mere thought, clearly amused.
“Of course it’s Mira,” I shrugged nonchalantly, completely unfazed by the notion.
“She’s a bit on the wild side,” I said, leaning back in my chair with a small grin creeping onto my face.
“And you know what? I actually enjoy a little chaos,” I added, prompting Brian to chuckle in agreement.
“That's no surprise to me,” Johnson replied with a shake of his head, indicating his familiarity with our dynamic.
“Are you two really considering it?” he asked, his tone half-teasing.
“Oh, it’s going to be nothing short of a disaster,” I said, smirking again.
“Exactly,” Brian chimed in, a knowing look in his eye.
“An entertaining disaster,” I reaffirmed enthusiastically, as Brian nodded along, clearly on board with the idea.
“Honestly... I can't wait to witness that,” I admitted, leaning back with a satisfied grin, feeling the thrill of the potential chaos.
“Zayn and Mira,” I stated, solidifying the idea.
“Locked in for sure,” I added playfully as I shifted my attention toward Dylan.
“Alright, Dylan, it’s your turn now,” I prompted, even though I had a strong hunch that he would inevitably go with Violet. But first, I wondered if she would be far too annoyed to entertain his proposition after he explained the details of the bet. He didn’t rush to respond; instead, he sat there in silence for a moment, contemplating. Slowly but surely, he lifted his head, ready to join in on the fun.
“Violet.” He muttered and Brian leaned back in his chair, a wide grin spreading across his face, clearly pleased with himself.
“Of course,” Johnson said, nodding in agreement as if the idea was a foregone conclusion.
“I mean, that was pretty obvious,” I added with a smirk, knowing full well the implications behind it.
“Yeah, not much of a shock there,” Dylan responded quietly, letting out a soft exhale as if the thought had been lingering for a while.
“She’s going to be with me,” I stated emphatically, and there was no question about it. There was not even a hint of hesitation in my voice just a firm conviction. Brian tilted his head, intrigued.
“Oh?” he questioned, showing a mix of surprise and curiosity.
“Wow, look at you, so confident,” Dylan remarked, letting the corners of his mouth curve upward just slightly, revealing the faintest hint of a smile.
“Well, I mean…” I shrugged my shoulders lightly, trying to downplay the gravity of my proclamation.
“She’s going to be my queen.” I paused for just a moment, allowing the weight of my words to settle in the air, and then suddenly, I burst out laughing.
“YOUR WHAT?” Brian exclaimed, sitting up straight in his seat, his eyes wide with disbelief.
“No, no…repeat that for me,” Dylan groaned in response to Brian’s bewilderment.
“Come on, just shut up for a minute,” he added, clearly a bit flustered by the sudden attention.
Johnson simply smirked, enjoying the exchange far too much.
“You just referred to her as your queen,” Brian pointed out dramatically, his tone teasing. “And if she’s your queen, then that makes you…?”
With a frustrated sigh, Dylan dragged a hand over his face, revealing the comical nature of the situation we found ourselves in.
“…King,” he muttered, and at that moment, we lost it completely. The room erupted into laughter, a loud and uncontrollable cacophony of joy that filled every corner. I leaned back, shaking my head in disbelief at the unexpected turn our conversation had taken.
“No way,” I managed to say between fits of giggles.
“King of prom?” Brian wiped away a few tears of laughter from his eyes, still processing the absurdity of it all.
“I never knew you had dreams like these, bro,” Johnson chuckled softly, clearly amused.
“This is totally new information,” Dylan said with a light shake of his head, although the smile on his face suggested he was warming up to the idea.
“I can’t believe you guys,” I said, still grinning despite my mock annoyance. “I hate all of you.”
“No, you absolutely don’t.” Those words echoed in my mind, and for the very first time this evening, I noticed something remarkable. He didn’t appear to be sinking under the weight of his emotions. Instead, he seemed… lighter. He wasn’t perfectly okay not yet, anyway but he was certainly better than before. And honestly? That was more than enough for me at this moment. I leaned back into my chair, stretching my arms out and feeling a sense of relief wash over me.
“Alright then,” I murmured with a hint of satisfaction.
“Prom is officially sorted,” Johnson announced with a nod of his head, exuding the confidence of someone whose plans were finally falling into place.
“More or less,” Brian replied, his grin widening, clearly pleased with how things were shaping up.
“Except for me,” I chimed in, rolling my eyes dramatically to add some humor to the moment.
“Don’t even think for a second that we’re counting you,” he gasped with mock disbelief.
“Such disrespect,” Dylan interjected with a quiet breath, though he was still wearing a faint smile. But beneath that smile, I could sense an underlying tension a shadow that lingered just out of reach. I stole a quick glance at him, my heart heavy with the weight of unspoken words.
Tonight, he seemed able to laugh, to breathe freely. But I couldn't shake the feeling that tomorrow would bring entirely new challenges. Tomorrow would be a turning point, and I just hoped things would go smoothly for him especially that Violet wouldn’t become too upset, though deep down, I feared it was inevitable.
