Chapter 84 The Recording
Cara stared at Sarah's reaction and realized that something was wrong. She knew the woman quite well, after all that was her mother in-law for years.
Obviously, Jessica had something against her and was making her dance to her will. It even became more glaring when Sarah unwillingly wrapped her arms around Jessica and gave her soft pats on her back.
People applauded the obvious fake act of love just because. No one was interested in the family problem they were having although they did not mind gossiping about them.
"What do you think is going on between those two?" Romeo asked as he leaned in closer to Cara, keeping his voice to a whisper loud enough for only her to hear.
She was surprised that he had even noticed it but then again, Romeo had proved to be a man of keen sight.
She turned to move closer to him and responded. "I did not think you would notice. It is obvious that Jessica has something against her mother-in -law, that is if the Jessica I know is still in there, then she is controlling Sarah Knowles with a big, bad and dirty secret."
Romeo gave a nod of acknowledgement but said nothing more.
Cara decided to ask him the question that pooped into her mind. "Why do you think Jessica invited us over to the party in the stead of your parents?"
"Maybe to show off her new position to you? She wants to brag to you that she has a good paying job now." He suggested.
Cara shook her head slightly. "Probably but I doubt it. It has to be something more than that. I think she has a plan, I don't think we are going to like it either." She squinted, staring at the fake smile in Jessica's eyes.
She felt a sudden shiver and the sense that someone was staring at her. Turning to look in another direction on the stage, she was surprised to see Chris staring at her with an unwavering gaze.
In his eyes were a mix of emotions, some she recognized to be anger and hatred and she knew it was not directed at her but at the man that was sitting next to her.
Romeo was not bothered by it though, it seemed like he had noticed it but he did not care. He was sitting confidently next to the woman he loved and whoever was not comfortable with it could hang themselves for all he cared.
She avoided his gaze, pretending like he was not there.
The rest of the event went on as it was planned, the people drank and discussed both private and public matters.
Cara remained by Romeo's side all through and Romeo proudly introduced her to all the people he met as his woman. Cara had thought they would keep it a secret since they were yet to get his parents permission on their relationship but he did not care and he was the kind of man to do what was on his mind as long as he felt it was right.
Although he mostly consulted Cara before taking a step but he knew that she would never allow him to tell the guests that they were in a relationship even though it was already well known. He had updated his profile with a lot of pictures of both of them and her alone.
Romeo had to meet with some high end business men and women and Cara decided to excuse herself even though he was insisting.
She took a walk down the hall, a few business men and women saying hello to her now that they all knew that she was Romeo's love.
Standing by the wine table, she helped herself with a glass and took a sip from it.
"You look beautiful today."
She turned around to the manly voice she heard from behind her. She had guessed who it was before even turning around. "Chris..." She forced the word out of her mouth.
He gave her a slight smile and reached for a glass of red wine. "How have you been? It is nice to see your face except I cannot say the same about your handbag."
She gave a roll of her eyes. "Thank you, unfortunately I can't say the same about you or your handbag." She folded her arms below her breast. "Congratulations on your successful event."
"Thank you so much." He smiled. "Your words are always the nicest to me."
She wanted to roll her eyes again but managed to control herself. "Enjoy the rest of your evening." She turned to walk away but he grabbed her by her wrist and pulled her back.
"Wait, don't go." He suddenly said, "I want us to have a conversation."
She tried to shrug free from his hold but his grip was firm. "Let go of me, Chris. Why would you even think of doing something so crazy here?"
He leaned closer to her and muttered to her. "This is not crazy but it will become crazy if you refuse to comport yourself."
A deep frown settled on Cara's face. "What the fuck is wrong with you?!" Her voice was a harsh whisper.
"Stop fighting it and just listen to me." He said firmly. "I won't take much of your time, I just want you to listen to me. I know that you have made up your mind to stay with that rich spoilt brat but just listen to me, I can treat you better if only you just let me--"
A hand suddenly grabbed Chris' wrist and pulled him forcefully away from Anaya. Romeo stood in front of her, between both of them, and a deep frown nested on his face. "What do you think you are doing?!" His voice was audible. "This is sexual harassment, do you understand me?!"
Chris barked at Romeo's face. "Stay away from Cara! She doesn't belong to you!"
"She isn't something you can own!" Romeo responded sharply.
Cara pushed herself to their middle. "It's a trap," she kept her voice low but audible enough for both of them to hear. "We are being recorded from all angles."
Chris stopped and looked around and so did Romeo. They were both surprised to see cameramen hiding around and recording them.
Of all the people around, Cara spotted a devilish smile amongst the crowd. Jessica was watching them.
